skoda fabia failed MOT on emissions

Featured Replies

skoda fabia 1.4 2005 failed MOT on emissions

exhaust lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (8.2.1.2 (c))

i come home and read fault codes with vcds and got error code

P1404 EGR System Basic Setting not Performed

does anyone think this could be the cause for the emissions fail?

i been told by the garage to change both the lambda sensors but as they cost alot i need advice 1st

thanks in advance

  • I got someone to come out to check the car and confirmed its a bad catalytic converter  and i found a car breakers who is willing to give me a catalytic converter and said if it passes the mot I pay £

  • Update good news my car passed its mot and it was the catalytic converter not the 02 sensor. And had to replace the exhaust sleeve as it was 100% rust lol  Thanks for every one's help 👍👍👍👍

  • This has completely spiralled out of control, if the car has failed on emissions there should be a readout from the gas analyser stapled to the fail sheet. Please post a picture so we can clearly see

Please post a photo of the emissions fail printout, with the lambda, CO, and HC numbers.

Exhaust leak seems quite likely to me, especially if lambda number is high.

Ask the MOT place for another copy, or just what the exact lambda number was. They must have the info.

Ok will go down later today and let you know and what I was told is if the egr basic settings not performed this will cause emissions test to fail is this correct?

Don't know, but sounds unlikely.

If you have VCDS why not do the basic setting?

I just got the free vcds and can't afford to pay for licence I just changed my job so have to wait till end of month for my wages plus can't find any local people with vcds i check for exhaust leak as I can see the person before replaced the flexi pipe and put clamps on instead of welding it

Check further back too, a leak after the cats is not going to affect engine management but will affect the tailpipe lambda measurement.

This is likely to be your issue, you need to identify the leak and repair/replace the exhaust section.

If you still have issues then you need to investigate further, sometimes a fresh service and premium fuel can be enough to get it within range.

Buy an exhaust bandage, and use that to seal the leak short term. Long term you'll need a new exhaust section.

I just checked it and looks like it's got a tiny leak at the flex pipe which the previous owner got it replaced with a universal flex pipe the ones you  clamps on it's leaking from the end of the clamp and the back box got a tiny hole aswel

Ok, you need a new flex pipe; they don't tend to respond well to welding or exhaust bandages, but a bandage should last years on the back section.

Problem I got is i need it for the mot retest tomorrow and I oredered one online it will take the exhaust a week to get here plus local ones cost more than double the cost as online and the universal flex pipe is new it's just leaking from where the clamp goes on to. I just get new clamps hope that holds till new exhaust gets here as the clamps don't look like good ones and abit rusty. It did have the same flex pipe on last year mot and passed I reckon the clamps got loose

Bodge it and scarper.

Worth checking behind the wheel arch liner at nearside rear, as you get a much better view of the back box with that removed; you might find a bigger hole there. Does it sound farty?

Can  you do 'output tests' on the engine ECU and see if you hear the valve clicking at the appropriate point in the sequence?

Yes he did the output test and can hear it clicking

I seem to remember this situation being discussed before, but can't remember the resolution, or even if there was one.  Is either valve a genuine Skoda one or a genuine Pierburg one (generally same thing)?

One more thing he said he could smell petrol or oil coming from the exhaust and abit of smoke it's white but as it really cold it might be condensation

Very likely to be that, yes, but it should stop smelling of petrol very soon after a cold start.

Think they aftermarket ones
