Ukraine - war ? UK only economic sanctions or military action too ? Is the Ukraine issue simple or complex ?

Again, 'if true' applies as there's so much to sift through, this could be be Putin's big mistake. The internal opposition in his own country to invasion in Ukraine. Like any dictator he'll be keen to shut it down.

I wondered what a neutral country like the Irish Republic were going to contribute to helping the Ukraine & what they might have to do about Russia and Sanctions if anything with them being in the EU so was having a google.

So they get fertiliser from Russia

& export about 60 million euro  worth of food imports to Russia.

Interesting that Ireland is having to look at where it gets its coal. So they still produce electric from coal!

Then that they get Gas from the UK who only have 44% of the gas it needs from the UK waters and has to import gas.

Also what they are saying about the States National Oil Reserves.

Truly horrific scenes playing out in the Ukraine. I cant even imagine the terror many are feeling and the brutality that is going on. Those desperately trying to flee now finding fuel in short supply, 15 hour queues at the borders according to some press reports.

The west are in a catch 22 situation, if they cut off Swift, Russia dont get paid for exports, so exports don't get exported. Ukraine is now no longer be able to export their wheat and other commodities. Price of wheat barreling upwards. Russia so big on oil gas coal cereals metals and all commodities we take for granted.

However did we get into this dire position?

Chernobyl radiation levels increasing probably due to disturbance of top soil from heavy trucks.

https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/ukraine-nuclear-agency-reports-higher-chernobyl-radiation-levels-due-heavy-2022-02-25/

Speculation in some press reports that Russia may want to use Chernobyl to blackmail the west, though that sounds a bit like a suicide vest wearer's mentality.

It's a bad situation all round - I just hope someone sees sense and bumps him off...

Interestingly I've seen nothing from north Korea yet - I'd expect them to be siding with Russia as well...

Russia bans British airlines from its airspace

Wonder if other airlines will follow?

This will mean a complete rescheduling of anything that flew threw or near Russian or Ukrainian airspace which is a lot as flying north on the Great Circle paths is the most efficient and hence more fuel will be used going from air controller beacon to beacon avoid their airspace.

Shame we will lose access to some of the Antonov aircraft which we occasional charter for special movements which western aircraft cannot handle.

Rumours that the one off 225 may have been destroyed or damaged, fighting all around the unique aircraft at Kiev airport, last heard Russian just captured that part of the Kiev airport.

Hungary turning back men 18 - 60 at the border.  They say they should fight. Which is what their Ukrainian government told them.    Time that the UN have Blue Helmets at the Borders.  Only issue is that in the past they have stood back watching people be murdered.

Nadine Dorries Tweeted last night 'Action. We stand with Ukraine'. Perhaps her and Priti Patel need to talk to each other or Nadine Dorries needs to add 'except those fleeing war' to her Tweet.

Quote

Britain has not set up a route for Ukrainian refugees to reach UK shores, it emerged last night, as thousands headed to the border following the Russian invasion.

The UK has stopped accepting visa applications from Ukrainians stuck in the country, meaning there is no safe and legal route for them to seek asylum in Britain unless they have British relatives.

Countries surrounding Ukraine are braced for an exodus and the UN Refugee Agency has warned of “devastating humanitarian consequences”.

The United States has predicted that up to 5 million people could be displaced by the conflict, and Poland alone is preparing to receive up to 1 million refugees.

I think you’ll find if anyone is turning back men 18-60 at any border, its the Ukrainian border guards. There is martial law declared in Ukraine and there is an outright ban on these men to leave and compulsory conscription.

https://dailypost.ng/2022/02/25/russia-ukraine-zelenskyy-bans-men-aged-18-to-60-from-leaving-country/

Many driving their families to the border, dropping them off and then turning back to return to the fight.

Poland has waived all Covid and Visa requirements for people fleeing.

From tv coverage I watched on Polish TV this morning, Ukrainian men are not trying to flee they are simply evacuating their wives and young children and then going straight back to do what they strongly believe is their duty. Interviews show how they are returning to engage in the war without anyone turning them back.

Brave people.

Btw I speak Polish fluenty, watch Polish news channels regularly and have a far deeper understanding of eastern european politics and history than you may think.
