RE: 2006 vrS OWNERS STUTTER - SKODA UK FIX

Featured Replies

I'm about to buy new '07 vRS and from what I can tell, it's no big deal to replace the EGR gasket with a new one drilled out to whatever size you like (the emissions level is then up to you).

It sounds like the 'legal' skoda fix is too conservative to fix the problem having to meet new EU4 regs.

Also, I'm trying to find out if VAG-COM is able to turn down the EGR valve on the 06+ models. Anyone know ?

Failing that a remap - but that puts the warrantee in jeopardy ?

All this is very annoying as Skoda have bodged what seems to be a great car and their response is sub-standard. :(

I too am new to the Skoda scene having got my identical car to yours on Monday. I haven't yet had the same stutter as you but have felt a slight splutter at low revs (about 1.5K) in 3rd or fourth, anybody else had this or is it just me being new to diesel?

Ref your qoute below

"One thing it definatley does though whilst sitting still and the engine ideling is shake the whole car which is quite annoying - will this go away over time ?"

I definately have not felt this at all.

1) the skoda 'legal' fix is too conservative, and still leaves a bit of stutter (according to what I read, mine is '05 tho..) but still conforms to euro 4

2) don't know if '06 models are different to mine, but I have had my EGR valve turned down to its lowest setting with VAG com (no smoke now..) so I assume you can too...

3) according to posts a remap all but cures the problem (with a re-map the EGR valve will be turned down anyway...) and a remap WILL void your warranty.

hope this helps ;)

Now mine has 27,000 on the clock the stutter has died right down. Not sure if this is partly due to the remap though?

yes. That is the stutter at 1.5 K where it gets me every so often. This must be one of the longest threads in the world. I bought mine in Dec 06 replacing a 54 plated vRS. I do not regret it for one moment as in 3,000 miles it happens so in frequently not a problem. I shall wait till year one service and see where we go then with it. However, I respect some seem to find it more difficult to live with .

Yep...maybe skoda should take note of how many customers are concerned over this fault.

Its not a fault, its a phenomenum, skoda said that so we must believe them. NOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

lol..

Picked up my vRS on Wednesday and it has what seems to be the stutter - a momentary hesitation when changing down from 4th to 3rd at 1800 rpm. I don't think it will bother me, but if having what Skoda refer to as this "characteristic" is also accompanied by poor fuel consumption then it's not acceptable. My first 500 miles including two 130 mile stints on the motorway returned 41 mpg. Not very much better than my old petrol Passat 1.8. :(

Fuel economy should improve as the engine & other bits loosen up (and your driving style adapts). The computer is all lies though - for me it says around 60mpg - but I get between 47-51mpg.

if you have a new car (first 500 miles?) then the fuel economy will improve vastly as the miles go on... the engine isn't really loosened up until about 10k... give it at least a few thousand miles, and you'll see the economy improve...

tested mine yesterday, did about 230 miles, and it returned an average of 50.1mpg, which I'm very happy with.(mixed driving ) My car is now up to 71k, but didn't really feel loosened up until 10k..... (although mine is an '05 and the euroIII engine)

each thousand or so miles, you should see an improvement...

edit: djthompson beat me to it! lol..

Thanks DJT and Sharkrider for those replies. Other than the mpg that'll hopefully improve I'm absolutely delighted with the car. Flooring it from about 40 in 4th is sooooo satisfying!

Wow this is one hell of a thread to work your way through!

Having done this I have several questions...

I am shortly to trade in my brilliant 2005 vrs furby for a new 2007 one (oh dear) am I now to expect I will be cursed by the dreaded stutter (sorry phenominum). If so it sounds from all the threads that It should be easy to cure... Has anyone actually done the mod themselves and had full success. If so, then where are the photos showing the position of the EGR gasket etc, and what 'exactly' do you have to do.

Have any of the re-mappers / chippers advertised that they can mod the car to 100% get rid of it?

On the question of mpg my current 2005 model reliably returns 55-60mpg in the winter and up to 68mpg in the summer without the air-con on. My daily commute is a 35 mile each way journey through mostly country lanes. I am a 'mature' driver but still regularly see 80-90+mph on stretches of my route (sorry mi lord!). I believe the trick to good mpg is to drive quickly but smoothly... don't mash the throttle, in the vrs you don't need to! Indeed my better mpg figures are probably from my quickest drives - you spend so much time coasting on a trailed throttle when travelling at speed. These figures are competely genuine as I have checked the accuracy of the computer by known mieages and actual fuel amounts used, typically I get 500 miles per (semi-brimmed) tankfull of Shell or Esso fuel.

Any reliable leaks on the next furby vrs spec, or photo's yet?

One last question... has anyone used the latest Phillips +80% bulbs, from early press reports they sound unbelievable.

current roumor on the next gen vRS (available mid 2008) is that you will have a choice between 150bhp petrol or more powerful diesel....

  • 2 weeks later...

Had my new car since saturday.

I've done 200 miles, and the stutter has occured several times :thumbdwn:

Its such a minor problem though, i'll mention it next time im at skoda (hopefully no time soon)

I still love the car all the same :D never fails to put a smile on my face. Even when it happens i laugh it off.

Roll on Feb 2010 - remap time :D

I have a juddering 03, even after a wiring loom replacement and Injection flush - no diagnosis from dealership.

That wont be this problem!

The stutter, i believe, is only on the pd130/diesel engines and cars 2005 >

Is anyone else waiting for Tesco to issue a Technical Notice saying that the stuttering caused by their dodgy petrol is a phenomenon caused by the latest EU emissions standards for petrol and there is nothing anyone can do?:)

I am having my 56 Fabia vRS stutter sorted on Thursday. Took it in today but they had to order an EGR gaskett.

When I asked if they were going to adjust the settings in the EMS, they replied "No, is that a problem?"

I've heard that the gaskett alone doesn't completely solve the issue. Is this true??

Hi All,

I had my EGR fix about 3 weeks now ago and the car is running fine. Still passing those slow beemers! :D

Rob

Had the fix done at my local Skoda dealer on Thursday.

The hesitation has reduced dramatically. Wasn't a big issue to me in the first place, but as it was an easy fix i might as well have it done.

What is an issue now though, is that the engine runs a little rougher than usual and has lost some of it's low end 'punch'. Still a quick car but doesn't feel as responsive. Almost as if there is a flat spot between 1500 and 1700 rpm.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, is there a something that Skoda can do??? If not, i'll have the hesitation back and have a smoother unit and more perkiess.

Its not just Fabias with the stutter I have an 06 Octavia 105 bhp and have had the problem from day one . The cars been back to dealer 5 times and with Skoda HQ once and still no joy. Its getting worse and now the car vibrates at anything over 70mhp like as if the wheels were off balance. Its a pain in the ar5e its my fifth and last Skoda thats for sure:mad: .

Hope I will still be welcome here despite what I buy instead:O

That's odd. We also have a 06 Octy 1.9Pd and have no sign of a stutter, and the Fabia Vrs (06 also) has gradually stopped stuttering as the miles have increased.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had my stutter fix performed by my local deal Westover Skoda in Dorset.

Been great so far no sign of the hesitation I would get around 1500-2000rpm - feels smoother to drive and a bit pokier too.

Kudos to the the Westover boys for such great service to. They didn't have a spare courtesy car to loan so the manager Andrew Grainger lent me his Octavia VRS estate (v. nice!).

Top dealer - top bloke(s).

Skimbo

Maybe a stupid question and I have searched for abit but can't find an answer.

I have a 2005 vrs and didn't think I would have to worry about this.

I have been noticing the stutter though and have now read in here it is a problem with 05 cars.

Where do I find my engine code?

Nothing I can find on my car or vagcom has BLT in it.
