RE: 2006 vrS OWNERS STUTTER - SKODA UK FIX

Featured Replies

Me too' date=' it's not. The stuttering problem is [b']DEFINATELY [/b]EGR related and not related to just the 06 model VRS. I've had 3 passat tdi 130's and 2 of those have had the stutter too. Lots of complaints on other forums from Audi, VW and seat owners with the stutter aswell if you dig around seatcupra.net, tyresmoke.net, passatworld etc

On my current passat, which stutters worse than my earlier one, i spent a fortune and nothing seemed to cure it. VW released a modified EGR part (gasket i think?) which improved mine a lot but didnt cure it. As a final resort my dealer offered to disconnect the EGR unit and it sorted it immediately 100%. Have a search on google for "EGR mod" - lots of people are doing it. It involves blanking off the EGR completely, it improves performance a tad and fuel economy seems better too. Was worried it might affect the emissions come MOT time but my dealer assured me it wouldnt. Mines done 20k miles like that now and through its last MOT with flying colours.

Someone else mentioned on here that if you turn the EGR right down with VAG-COM it does reduce the stutter.

  • First off, well done to those who condensed the thread Couple of questions if anyone knows the answer. 1) Where do skoda dealers fit the 14.5mm gasket? Position 6 or 11? Seem to remember reading th

I'm thinking the same as mine is supposed to be being built next week!

Bit of a numpty here can soemone explain what an EGR is and what does it do ?

I'm a mechanical numpty too but afaik the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) system recirculates exhaust gasses to achieve better emission figures.

It's kinda like the human equivalent of breathing your own farts....

Recieved the following in a letter from Winchester Motor Company today:-

"I wish to inform you that Skoda UK has provided us with a remedy to the slight hesitation you are experiencing with your Skoda VRS.

We have received the new part from Skoda UK and we would like to book a mutually convenient time so that we can fit this part to your vehicle."

I called Skoda UK today and spoke to Jenny who said there is definitely no official Skoda UK fix for this problem, they are working on it and have tested a number of options, but definitely no fix as yet.

No idea what to make of this!

Had a phone call today from Skoda customer services - same as usual "they are still working on the problem".

I phoned my dealer to see if he had any news and he told me he had heard from Skoda this week that they are testing a fix believed to be a modified exhaust gas recirculating valve.

If successful, don't expect an implementation date like next week since modified parts will need to be manufactured etc.

My stutter recently got worse and yesterday the engine fault light came on!...AA came out to it and as we moved the car nearer to his van the light cleared. He checked it and found a P0401 fault code - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected.

Running ok today and strangely the stutter is not there!!! - didnt a SEAT guy cure his by changing the EGR Valve - will see if I can get the dealer to change the valve

Booked it into the dealer for Tuesday...will let u know what happens.

Somebody posted earlier asking how remapped cars fare with the stutter - what about cars with Digi Boxes fitted eg. Dragons....are thay any better or worse??

Keith

Just got back from the dealer :( ...will not name & shame

1st point........the P0401 fault code is not a Skoda code!...must me an AA one! - rather strange that I said seeing as its on the list I downloaded fron this website! - blank look

2nd point.......car drives ok they said and the AA man had cleared the fault code...so nothing we can do! - its still stuttering, lumpy tickover and now a hesitation on blipping the throttle from idle.

3rd point......whats happening with the stuttering prob......well we've sent the data to skoda uk.....what about rumours of a modified EGR valve.......blank look from Service Manager....followed by I've got an 06 vRS and its ok! - does this mean he thinks we are all imagining it!

I'm not happy with all this ..perhaps as a group we should contact 5th Gear...they might be interested seeeing as they they've driven it and praised it?

Keith

It gets a mention with honestjohn.co.uk now:-

Quote: What to Watch Out For

Make sure the 1.4 8v is not losing coolant and has not overheated through loss of coolant in the past, possibly due to friction on the bottom hose as a result of soft engine mountings. Seems to be an engine management problem with 2006MY Fabia VRS 130s. More at www.Briskoda.net

I believe it's only the new 06 cars that have the problem. Mine is a Sep 04 car and I've never had the problem.

I dont think it's only 06 cars that are affected - they may be worse(??) but the problem seems to affect anything with the 130bhp TDi VAG engine. See my earlier post - many complaints on other forums from owners with cars from all manufacturers and models with that engine. My 01 and 03 model vw's have both done it.

.......Just sent 5th Gear an email outlining the issues......

The email I recieved from SUK yesterday about something else stated that they are still looking into it. No mention of any trials

Well done, let's hope they run with it. If they want one to blast a cannonball at they can have mine!

Get skoda to confirm there is or is not a trial of the fix and if they do keep the letter and give it to your solicitor. In my opinion now you have rejected the car and left it with the dealer it is no longer your problem as you have returned the car as not up to the standards you would expect from a new car under current trading laws.

I do have to ask if you have actually rejected the car and handed it back. It sounds like you are still driving the car, which typically amounts to accepting the vehicle.

It's kinda like the human equivalent of breathing your own farts....

That has to be the best anaolgy I have heard in a long time, classic :)

Evening all

Has anyone had any joy in either rejecting stuttering vRS (or other 1.9tdi), getting any proper positive news for Skoda Uk about problem or contacting any car magazines ?

Cheers

No, No and, er, No! But I'm in Winchester County Court in a couple of weeks and will let you know the outcome. My friendly dealer is counter-suing; just so that you know the type of people we're up against!

Had no reply from 5th Gear :(

what is the dealer counter suing you for Kerry?

Keith

Can I ask - is anyone actively doing anything about the stutter (apart from Kerry) or are most people just going to put up with it.

Never thought before but if no fix what about resale value of car ?!

Regards

Unspecified amount of legal costs.

Perhaps you could take a posse of other owners with you :D

On a more serious note I would say that Kerry could use some support - Perhaps a new and clean thread with all those affected which might then be useful as supporting evidence. Sort of a register of affected owners.

Perhaps all those affected owners should send their details (name, addresses, car details etc) to Kerry if it will be of help in her court case.

Let us know Kerry

Many thanks for the support. I think I've probably got most of the evidence I need from the various posts on the site without necessarily needing people's personal details.

I would be interested in anybody who has had dealings with Winchester Motor Company in St Cross Road, Winchester, Hampshire though; particularly if they've bought a Fabia vRS and had problems of any sort. I'm preparing a campaign for the local press and making a case for Trading Standards once the court case is over.

Next time I pick a name for a forum it will be unidentifiable as male or female!
