Auto Hold system - always ON ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A few days ago I bought an "approved used" Skoda Superb MK3 from a Skoda dealer.

When I came to collect the car, I noticed that the "Auto Hold" button can't be turned off - it is always "on".
I raised that with the dealer.
Initially they thought there was a problem with the button itself, but that was ruled out.
Now they say that "Auto Hold - always on" was programmed into the car's ECU at build. It was done at the Skoda's factory.
They don't know why it was done - maybe previous owner requested that from Skoda (?) or maybe it was programmed like that for safety reasons, because the car has a tow bar.

They don't believe there is a fault with Auto Hold, but rather normal behavior, because the car was programmed like that at Skoda's factory.

I refused collection of the car and left it with the dealer to sort out "Auto Hold"
The dealer says they need to contact Skoda to find out why ECU was programmed like that and how to revert Auto Hold system to standard settings.

Has anyone seen/heard this before ? cars come from the factory with non-standard ECU settings / "auto hold - always on" ?

thanks

I suspect someone will be along to help you on how the Auto Hold can be turned off.

Probably not someone who's full time job is working at a Skoda Main Dealers where if they do not know answers they make them up,

and then fail to resolve issues if there are any, like a car not performing or functioning as it should.

I've never heard of that programming coming from the factory and it's not anything to do with the car having an OEM towbar as I can still adjust my AH and also have a towbar.

P.S. Maybe update the car details in your profile settings.

I've never heard of Auto Hold being programmed or coded to be permanently on/off - factory or self done.

Same goes for VW, Audi & Seat models too.

Makes no sense, given Auto Hold stays on or off, depending on which position u left it.

Sounds like the "Skoda dealer" has no idea, or is confused.

Did the dealer try to reset the SW or reinstall the latest SW version?

It may bring everything in the right configuration…

Not heard of such thing either…

From the Karoq manual not the Superb as i was looking at this.

So the OP's car can not just roll when the driver / technician might want it to with the engine running.  Interesting if true that that would be how the factory set it.

Year?  Is it a manual or DSG? Do you have an Auto Hold On/Off button down on the RHS of the gear lever?  If so I'd be showing this to the dealer and saying "see that button....fix it so it works!!!".

So they should when you are last car in a line and stopped.  But as by the UK highway code if stopped for longer with traffic behind do not have the brake lights on.  Apply the parking brake.  It is the same as not sitting with your foot on the brake pedal.   Autohold the brakes are applied, front and rear, parking / e-brake the rear brakes.    PS, same as rear fog lights, if fog lights are required then last cars in the gridlock traffic should have on.  Every car down the lanes at a standstill might have them on, even when the cars in front tail lights or brake lights and high level brake light is very visible.     But drivers sometimes disengage their brain rather than functions.

Yes, I agree, it doesn't make any sense to code it permanently ON, as it stays on, if turned on (unlike "start/stop" system)

Fingers crossed it is just a simple ECU coding and nothing more serious or hidden...

I hope they eventually do this and that solves the problem !

I haven't got any updates from them, they told me it will be after Christmas anyway.

2016, DSG, button is there (i think all superbs MK3 have it)

Yes, that's what I did - showed them the button and explained that it is not working as expected.

@AK-S6 what is it that they are waiting on word from the factory?    Who are you dealing with a sales person, service manager of workshop manager.  They are taking the Michael.

Not going to help you, but sure fun, your car has a "special button"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placebo_button

A placebo button is a push-button or other control that appears to have functionality but has no physical effect when pressed. Such buttons can appear to work, by lighting up or otherwise reacting, which rewards the user by giving them an illusion of control.[1] They are commonly placed in situations where it would have once been useful to have such a button but the system now operates automatically,[2] such as a manual thermostat in a temperature-regulated office. Were the control removed entirely, some users would feel frustrated at the awareness they were not in control.

@AK-S6 When you get in the car and out of the car do you have the Red Light on and the e-Brake engaged, and then when starting and driving off the e-brake releasing but the or Autohold button lit with Yellow?

When you stop with the engine running or stop / start stopping the car do you ever use the e-Brake?

Are you pressing and holding the button?

When you get the chance put the DSG in neutral and see if the auto hold goes off, then back to drive and see if it comes back on.

I'm dealing with a sales person , he talks to their service department.

I'm annoyed not by the fact the car has a small problem (oh well...), but by the fact they are trying to tell me that it is perfectly normal to have "auto hold - always on" just because "it was done at the factory".

When i asked if previous owner could programmed that intentionally (for whatever reason), I was told it is impossible as ECU can only be programmed at the factory.

No, I'm not pressing and holding, i just press once.

I had Superb MK3 before, so i have an idea how it works. (previous one was manual though, this one is DSG, but I assume it should behave in a similar manner - at least manual doesn't say there is a difference in Auto Hold system between manual / DSG)

OK, I'll try that... What would that confirm though ? I assume the Auto Hold button light would be still on, right ? it is just dashboard wouldn't have the green (P) light when brakes pedal is pressed in neutral ?
