Superb Sportline or L&K 272 or 280

Recommended Posts

I thought I'd chuck a few photos of my L&K in here as I have the Sportline Spoiler (in body colour) and black front grille/bumper trim (Plastidip), so it looks a bit more Sportline! Personally, I went for the 280 as, at the time, I wasn't paying for my fuel, and I couldn't be without the proper exhausts. I wanted as higher spec as I could find and the only option on mine is the reverse camera, I think (as at the time it wasn't standard), and AFS lighting. I believe someone had coded speed sign recognition, and all of the other stuff Is factory (keyless, 4x heated seats, canton, heated screen, etc.).

It's a great car, and it maybe does rev a bit high on the motorway, but no major issue and the 6-speed has been generally good (I do prefer a proper auto, but that's obviously not an option here!).

I sense you may be looking for a newer car than my "OG" '65 Plate car, but it's a good comparison either way.

That’s a lovely motor. Yeah the L&K spec is very tempting. Plus you added some of the Sportline bits nicely. Just for me it’s a dark interior all the way. Black or even that brown one would sway me. If one came up the same as yours I would be tempted. Age would bring the price down also.

Thanks, with the early L&K's you couldn't actually have black! I do like the brown, but not sure it would work with Jungle Green! I actually really like the beige and its no different to keep clean than anything else, it just helps as you can see the dirt! Also stays cooler in summer I assume.

I have recently bought a 272 L&K hatch.
As a Q car, the spec beats the SportLine IMO.

I love the interior and the toys. 4x heated, 2x cooled, heated screen, Canton, etc etc.

Very happy so far. Planning adding a Stage 1 remap in the next few weeks, so will be at about 340-350bhp.  Won’t change anything else on the car. So, it will look like a taxi and go like a Golf R.

Happy hunting!

The ultimate Q spec is the 280 SE-L. That one really would look like a taxi.

I have the same 272.sportline plus. Late 2018 68 plate. Velvet red.
it is 7speed dq381 better box. Does rev lower at motorway speeds. It has gpf AND it still has exhaust flaps if you are that way inclined lol. Amazing car and mine is lowered on koni special actives with H&R springs and has the box and engine mapped. With r600 induction , Racingline elbow and pipe and turbo muffler delete.. golf club sport discs..370bhp 530nm. And still returns high 30’s sometimes low 40’s on a steady run:

That looks a great spec and some nice understated touches to it.

I've had my 280 L&K hatch for 2 years. I sold my previous car and didn't have long to source a replacement so although ideally I wanted a Sportline Plus estate, I had to take the best of what was available. Apart from the looks I think the L&K is the better buy now. It actually drives better than the Sportline as it has standard DCC. The spec is great with heated windscreen, heated rear seats and canton all standard. The cooling seats and sunroof are extras.

I do wish it had the 7sp box though. It revs highly on the motorway and it harms the mpg on long trips.

I think most of the later sportlines are the plus spec. The non plus models don't even have heated seats so they're a bit low on spec.

Just watch out as some of the later L&K estates will have been over £40k new so they will be subject to high VED rate for the first 5 years or so. A high specced Sportline may go over too as optional extras are included.

Pretty sure they're only available as an option on the L&K. The Sportline has bucket seats so it's not an option you can add to them.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall that the 272 has direct and port injection, while the 280 has direct injection only. (Or it might be the other way round. )

I was particularly interested in port & direct injection on my EA888 as it helps keeps the inlet valves clean.

And badging. Wheels make all the difference. L&K spec looks nicer, but one can quite reasonable expect an SE L spec car to be a minicab 😂

The cheap L&K badging went in the first few days I had the car... and the rest followed a few minutes later!

The other way round. Original 280 has port and direct injection. 272 has direct only with GPF. Current 280 is also direct injection with gpf.

Do you know when the change, year,  to direct came in on the 280 @KeteCantek?

I presume direct and port is favoured due to some form of inlet coaking up ?

I am not sure about the year but am certain it came into effect when the 272 was launched. Probably around 2019?  Since then it's just direct injection. Any 272 and 280 that is newer than a 272 will be direct injection only.

Yes port injection helps to reduce carbon buildup on the intake valve plenum and valve stems. Just a side benefit as the intention of port injection is to reduce particulates. This is why the direct injection only engines has a GPF.

Is it not the case that 280 = 8 injectors and 'old', 272 = 4 injectors and new(er)? I didn't think there was a crossover.

No, after the 272, it became 280 once again (now).

Timeline: original 280 6spd dsg, then 272 7spd dsg, now 280 7spd dsg.

Only the original 280 6spd has dual injection.

Yeah… that’s exactly the reason they’d make such an expensive, confusing and completely unpublicised change….
