''Glitters'' inside my coolant expansion tank

Featured Replies

What's the pressure cap like and what's your cleaning like.  Was the "glitter" put in by the shovelful then, how much was in that could work its way up to jam the pressure cap.  If there was that much it could jam the pressure cap I would have thought (but don't know) that would be enough to see or scrape out but if you are worried sure the best remedy would be to replace the pressure cap with a good quality new one then you can fit it and forget it - well at least until the cap wears or is faulty or there is another issues that could involve the pressure cap.

In country yes, as i said i have done it in the past but in City it's very difficult. All the videos from this work are in a garage-country home-repair shop.     Nah, i am going

  • Somewhere it is convenient to see and remove for cleaning would be my choice.

  • Arrogance again, you know you are not responding to engineers or chemist but you use the term BTB to show your self perceived superiority.  I have never seen Bromothymol Blue referred to in decades of

And i long as i live i will never return to 15W- for my Felicia.

I'm still trying to find a good 10W50 to switch and try but I can only find racing oils and the ones from Ravenol are not available even on Autodoc.
Switching to 5W is strictly prohibited so my only remaining option is what I've been doing since I got ownership of the vehicle and that is 15W50

Why? Either a political reason with no technical background or a proper technical explanation as to why a low Winter viscosity oil may not be used please.

Skoda prohibits it, but really the intermediate viscosity at room temperature is problematic, not so for the engine itself but rather for the gaskets...

  1. Skoda may not recommend using a 5W-Something multigrade oil, but have no legal power to prohibit anything.
  2. There are only 2 known values for a multigrade oil, a W (winter) value measured at an oil temperature of 0C and a hot value measured at 100C. At all other times unless the oil is extremely hot or cold the viscosity is between the quoted values.
  3. Other than on the edges of the sump, cylinder head, rocker cover and oil pump if applicable, engine oil does not contact gaskets, and where it does, these edges are not wearing faces. If you doubt this, please go and look at a scale drawing of an engine showing accurate gasket thicknesses. Ok, oil may contact seals (eg crankshaft end seals), but the only known issue with them is if reverting from a "synthetic" oil to a pure mineral oil you may have contraction of the seals.

Er, just in case there's any misunderstanding, I have never ever had any oil analyse done, well other than me looking at the oils that have come out of the cars and feeling any bits in the emptied oil between my fingertips.  Emptying out the oil from a lifetime factory fill was informative but totally unscientific.  A poster in another forum has put how changing the gear oil type and brand has helped the poor quality manual gear selecting on his 2018(IIRC?) VWŠkoda car I warned him this wouldn't be believed.  He used a German brand of oil which was developed for VW gearboxes so of course I took the opportunity to say . . . no, I can't say. ☺️

When I had the Midget and was going on to the Chunnel train I was a bit behind a TVR Cerebra and I wanted to be parked behind it on the train to get a good look at it on the train (I had yet to meet a local owner).  A newish Aston Martin (model I forget) got between us but I was close enough as we all got in the same train carriage.  I didn't realise the two were together and by the time I got out of my car the other two drivers were approaching me.  They wanted to look at and talk about the Midget.  The Aston driver was about 6' 2" or more (1.88 m) and told me his first car was an MG Midget and when I asked him how he fitted into it he said he didn't know now and declined my offer of sitting in the car.  Whilst I was talking to the Aston chap the Cerbie driver went off so I never did have a good look at the Cerbie.  This type of thing happened often, at petrol stations people would come across to say they or someone they knew one and how nice it was to see one on the road.  At a tyre place a flash Porker (Porsche "Porschar") was just in front of the Midget but two different people came over to me to talk about the Midget.  It wasn't just my good looks and charm that had them talking to me about cars rather than the more hero-worship models.  Another reason I liked such cars people were friendly towards them, wave and toot when on the road allow me to pull out of junctions when it wasn't my right of way.  And no traffic light Grandprixes or wanting to race on the roads (unlike when I had my more sports type cars).  Midgets made you were classless, welcomed by the high and low, which isn't always case in the UK.

For engine oils fro Skoda felicia there is a proper topic, already 12 pages and we can ''enrich'' it more.

Here we are talking about Felicia coolant, about expansion tank cap and relative ''issues'', not for Brera not for Toyota BZ4X not for Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E or for gear oil or steering wheel fluid or KW suspension.

Update: Last night i checked the expansion tank, YES there are still some detritus inside (look like glitters but not so ''shiny"), look like this

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/uploads/monthly_2025_01/G.jpg.cdc538aa212b57de31ef57585041fbcb.jpg

and i saw that the antifreeze level was ''one click'' lower and i added about 200ml distilled water.

I saw no leaks and i think the culprit is the VIKA expansion tank (bolts) since the cap is better quality.
