Key won't turn past 1st position!

Featured Replies

So long story short.

Can't turn the key.

I'm reading it's the steering lock despite not having any issues with the wheel locking.

I'm contemplating buying the lock, ie the assembly behind the key barrel and attempting to replace it myself.

Has anyone encountered the same? Is there specific tools required?

Steering lock only functions if you turn the wheel after removing the key, the exception is if the wheel happens to be in the exact position for the indent which is not straight ahead, if there is strain from the tyres caused by turning the wheel after key removal and engaging the steering lock then you may sometimes have to wiggle the wheel to allow the key to turn, this is almost certainly described in the owners manual.

If the above is not what is happening then the problem is either with a damaged or incorrectly cut key or the lock cylinder and its tumblers, some graphite powder (use a pencil) on the key may help.

I don't believe the actual lock is an issue. I can unlock the steering and lock it fine. The key turns just enough for that.

My issue from what I can ascertain is their is a mechanism behind the key that makes the car think the lock is on, even when it isn't, which won't allow the key then to turn. Found a video of a fella replacing the same on a mk5 golf. My local dealer who have always been knowledgeable wreckon it's this part.

I'm just wondering is there anyone with part numbers really and some insight, if they've tried it before 😂
