Driver's side window switches not working

Featured Replies

The driver's side window switch has stopped working on my wife's 2014 Roomster.  I thought it might be the fuse but the rear window on the same side works.  The other side works too.

I'd appreciate advice on what to look for (and how to gain access) eg remove plug on control module and remake as it could be a dirty connector.  If I take it to the dealer will a diagnostic check pinpoint the problem?

Any advice much appreciated.  Thank you.

Check whether the backlighting of the switches is working when the vehicle's sidelights are turned on.

The backlight illumination relies on the same earth wire as the switches do, so a lack of backlighting typically means that this eath connection is not good.

Often on this platform,  a broken wire in the door hinge area turns out to be responsible.

Thanks for the tip; just going out to check this.

All door switches light up, so no broken earth wires.  Any other suggestions ?

There may be other broken wires going to the motor module, or possibly corrosion on connector pins at the motor, or deeper within the motor module.

Wiring of door loom inside the bellows at A-pillar is easier to inspect than connector at window motor, so I'd suggest looking at that first.

Ok thanks.  Can the bellows just be pulled out of the 'A' post/door to inspect the wires, and is each end easily put back?  I assume it's like a grommet at either end.

Yes, it unclips at A-pillar end. There's a tab on the top that you push downwards to unlatch it, then it should come free.

Youtube probably has a number of relevant demo videos. Common to several Skoda models from about 2007 onward, I believe.

At last I've had a look at the wiring within the rubber bellows (the door had stopped locking too) and have found two broken wires. One thin one and the other one a bit thicker.

My initial thought is to strip back the insulation either end, splice the wires by pushing them together and soldering the joint, covering it up with heatshrink sleeving.

Acceptable? Or is there a better way?

Any feedback appreciated, thank you.

Cheers.
Denis.

Yes, that should be fine. Access is pretty awful but just use your third and fourth hands!

I've just spent a couple of hours this morning trying to solder two bits of wire together to sort this with no success whatsoever. The solder just wouldn't take.

It looks like at least another two have cracks in their insulation. Is it possible to buy the wiring harness and replace that?

Message me with VIN if you'd like me to look up part number of door loom.

Will do Pete.

I'm going to have another go at it when it gets a bit warmer. I think the problem with the soldering not working was that there wasn't enough heat on the joint. I've swapped the bit for a wider one which will hopefully apply more heat.

What's making it very awkward is that the wire from the plug-end is only about 25-30mm long and there's no slack in the other bit, so I'm having to splice in a short length of wire to join them.

Part number suggested by Parts Catalogue is 5J0 971 120 HD, RRP is currently £138.50 + VAT.

I repaired the loom on our Roomster recently, but by taking the whole thing out to repair on the bench. Probably worth persisting with your soldering efforts, extending the wires is a good plan.

Thanks for the info.

Can you tell me how to detach the plug from the socket on the 'A' post please? I couldn't see anything obvious when I was looking yesterday.

I got the door loom replaced at a garage that does body repairs etc.

I know the owner, and the chap he entrusted the job to. He's used to doing this sort of job; it took him just over an hour to do so not worth me even attempting to do it.

Thanks for all the help Pete ;-)
