What were you driving at 18?

Featured Replies

Ummm, was either my Dad's 1.9i volcane Clitreon ZX, but he may have sold it by the time I was 18, in which case it was a ZX TD. Both good cars in their way. My first truly owned car in my name, was my first Fabia, but I didn't buy that until I graduated when I was 22.

I've only read the title rather than the whole thread, so, "My parents mad" is my answer.

Didnt get to drive a car till a few years later.

Mo

My dads Citroen DS23 safari (if you remember these you are v old indeed) the one with swivel headlights.

then my first car was a white lhd Mini 850, not the quickist car but boy could it corner. Quite fun sitting on the wrong side as well.

My dad nearly bought one of them - the were called the Lada Riva over here in the UK.

I was glad he didn't

I used to sell Lada's and Protons.

Bl**dy awfull they were, never broke though!

And the triple valve Protons were suprisingly quick!

At 20 I worked for the Lada Car Import Centre in Bridlington (College Holiday job). Was the time of the Samara 5 door launch (1988). Good company to work for, shame they moved the offices to Birmingham just afterwards - but hey. Managed to buy my first CD Player with some of the cash I earned.

Anyway back on topic. Passed my test a month before my 19th birthday (11.11.86). Didn't own a car in my own name until 1992 - that was a demonstrator Skoda Favorit 136LS (Had less than 80 miles on clock).

But whilst I was learning to drive I was driving (if thats what they called it) Mum's Skoda Estelle 120LS in maroon with matching brown vynal roof (DUB 126Y). Mum got a little worried about me driving a rear engine car with swing axel so bought a brand new Hyundai Pony (D153 LAT) so I wouldn't harm myself. That took me through way beyond 19.

Oh yes and there was the Y Reg Driving school Micra - all 1.0 power baby:thumbdwn:

Regrets - yes - I should have learned to drive earlier - but I was broke at the time. So what's changed

at 18 I was driving a VW Vento

At 18 I had a MK2 1.6SR Astra ( C plate ) and a Fiesta SuperSport 1.4 ( E plate ). Drove the Fiesta till' I was 19 as the Astra gave up the ghost ( 2 engines later )and then got my Suzuki Swift Gti. Which I hear is still alive which is suprising.

I also had the privilage of driving my parents cars at the time ( my old man had an L reg 525i and me mum had a Diahatsu Fourtrack TDi ) as well as my sisters , then new and the dogs danglies, XR2i.

I also still had my yellow BMX with Mag wheels at the time.

i was driving around in a 1.4 Fiesta Sport

At 18, I was driving a 1974 Mini 1000. Reg was TLM 636M, I wonder what happened to it after I sold it for more than I paid for it.

Mk1 Fiesta XRS, kent cam, k&N, Koni adjustables bored out to 1740CC in glorious black, now that was a car

Gold Talbot Horizon on chrome Weller 8-spokes - GSG641T - bought from my dad for £100, sold for £250 :D The o/s headlight fell out due to soooo much rust on the car the day I sold it - hastily repaired

then

Blue Mini 850 - RMS291M - bought at night, previously owned by Mr F.Flintstone judging by the state of the floor!

and

Orange Vauxhall Chevette TDS842W - bought from my sis for £400 (sold to my dad a year later for £550 but I had spent a fair bit on it by then...honest!)
