Which screen wash to use?

Featured Replies

Just wondering what people use for their windowscreen wash (from the car screen sprays).

I was told to use VW screen wash stuff, because the last Fabia, the pipes corroded if this wasn't used.

Thanks in advance.

I always used the official VAG stuff, you need to have a certain type for "fan jet" washers apparantley so I didn't chance it with any cheap stuff. Didn't stop my Fabia from popping off the pipes in winter though

You should ideally use the stuff from VAG dealers.

Proper VW stuff. It's not expensive from GSF, it's better than cheap stuff, and it's a requirement for the fan jets on the front.

Told by a local dealer that the Autoglym stuff works too as they sell big bottles of it as well as the 500ml bottles of VAG stuff.

Personally I use the VAG stuff.

I use the proper VAG stuff, it's only what, £175 for a 500ml bottle and the service chap said just use half at a time, so I do and it's great!

My fan jet middle keeps popping out and dumping most of the wash fluid in one squirt, are they expensive and easy to DIY?

Thanks,

Ben

£175 for 500ml??? What the hell is in it?

;)

Ahh, see what you mean...I think I meant £1.75 :D

I never used VAG stuff in mine

I just used to some apple scented Halfords stuff.. never had any with it problems :)

Well what a load of VW tosh!... I've always used non-VW stuff from Halfords or Holts on our fan-jet Fabia and have never had any problems.

The key is ensuring that the filter on the top of the filler is in place - otherwise the fans can block!

not meaning to sound think but what is the fan jet????

Halfords tosh for me too - I like the green stuff ;) Also its seems to do a much better job than the VAG stuff.

red-devil: The fanjet replaces the nozzle on a 'regular' car, instead of squirting it onto the windscreen it sprays it on (mist like).

I did find that the halfords advanced stuff filled the fanjets with nasty white scuzz that was really difficult to get off even with a toothbrush :(

The VAG stuff isn't that expensive, I got a case of 1L for a smidge under £2 a bottle last time i got any.

VW stuff is actually pretty good value. Have covered loads of miles in VAG cars with fan jets and can confirm that on non-VAG stuff they always freeze up sooner.

I use Decosol stuff from Halfords (blue) , We have no VAG dealer within 50 miles , so the 'proper' stuff is not an option , seems to work fine for me.

I've used the Halfords concentrated screenwash for the last 3 or 4 years with both the Polo and the Fabia which both have the same style washers and have never had any probs.....

As mentioned above just make sure that the filter is always in place when filling up the washer reservoir.

Cheers

Dave.

I use Autoglym All Seasons Screenwash in the winter month mixed with cheap Tesco value bottled water to avoid the deposits in tap water where I live.

I put one litre of screenwash and four litres of water into a five litre container and top up the bottle in the car using that. Got a hygrometer to test it which says this mix will freeze if colder than -8C.

Use Einzsett in the summer and it is absolutely brill.

You'll probably find that the bottled water has more minerals and scale producing compounds in it than the tap water. If you don't have a Total Desolved Solids (TDS) meter then an easy test is to leave both bottled water and tap water to dry on a mirror. The one with the more white residue will have the most minerals.

To be really sure, you could use De-ionised or filtered water, but in any case, the wash wipe systems should be designed with hard water areas in mind.

Is this for real? It was something like £2.74 for 5L of the stuff in Wilkos last month. It's screen was for pity’s sake. (Have I just showed my ignorance and irrevocably damaged my car?)

Is that £2.74 for 5L of concentrate, or for the ready-mixed stuff though?

That's about the price of the concentrate.

Ready Mix. Which I then dillute further, say 2:1, water:mix. It always does the job fine....

I've always used Halfords concentrated screen wash, for 1 it does a good job, 2 its recommended by Auto Exoress Mag + it smells bloody gorgeous in the lemon:finger:

Hi Stu,

3. It will invalidate the warranty on your washer system :rofl:

Bulb types are listed in your manual I think.

There is a discount offer in the discounts section at the moment for Powerbulbs which might interest you. There are some good replacment bulbs which may improve the beam on the car.
