Pull the lid of your little cubby box fully open so it hangs down and have a look at the 'roof' of it to see if a spring clip is missing. I believe the item in your pic is one of the two spring clips which latches the lid closed.

Cables for rear drums are shorter (1585 Vs 1645), so if they'd given you one of those by mistake it would be shorter rather than longer. I believe you can buy the alloy guide tubes but can't see them on that catalogue. The small clips are factory, I didn't replace them. They are reuseable spring clips, you just squeeze them with pliers.

Access to get the inner clips on is very tight, so in my case I used Halfords 32-50mm stainless steel hose clips...

Further to our private message about Febi gaiters, there are two sizes depending on production number, which you can find on the label in the service book or under the boot carpet. Skoda production number 1N2 = Febi 21700 Skoda production number 1N5 = Febi 38622
