  1. Do you always run with the A/C switched on? If you switch it off for periods of time condensation/water can build up in the ducting and creates a horrible smell in the car when switched back on again.
  2. 79k miles is nothing for a 66 plate car. 1.6tdi is good for double/treble that as long as it's been looked after.
  3. Took my Superb in to fix the inoperative Driving Mode feature. 1/2hr late in starting the job and after 2hrs said they couldn't work out what the problem was so was booked in again for the week after to give then time to consult Skoda HQ. Again 1/2 late starting the job and after another 2hr wait they came back to say the Skoda HQ fix hadn't worked, at which point it was then re-booked for an all day session the following month c/w courtesy car. Annoyed I then left and discovered that they had actually fixed the problem but had neglected to do a re-start which is why they though it had been unsuccessful. Not much faith in this crowd and won't be using again.
  4. I used the VCDS first then pushed back the final bit. Had no problems since.
  5. Assuming the 1.6tdi Octy is the same as the 1.6tdi Superb then it is indeed 40k miles, however it was originally 80k but for some reason the frequency got halved by Skoda.( presumably some early age failures reported ) I still stick to 80k with mine though which is often enough IMO.
  6. Why indeed. So much of what is built into these cars is useless and when it goes wrong causes no end of trouble with what you'd think were completely unrelated items. That said, without them this forum may not need to exist.
  7. My details were the same when I changed mine. No idea why.
  8. Not sure how to read the quote. Do you mean light fog during the day, ie mist, or fog during the daytime? Either way, rear fog lights should only be switched on when visibility is less than 100m. Over that distance your are in contravention of the highway code and, more importantly, p1ssing off everyone travelling behind you by in effect driving with your brake lights permanently switched on. I don't think I've switched my rear fog lights on in the last 15 years. Never needed to. As you may have gathered, this topic is one that really gets under my skin. Would love to ban the bl00dy things altogether but I do realise that VERY occasionally they are needed. A way to improve the situation would be to make them speed sensitive. Once your speed goes above say 20 - 25mph they will automatically switch off. If you can safely drive above that speed then the fog can't be that bad.
  9. I had this done at the last service but it made little or no difference. There was a slight improvement ( or that could have been wishful thinking ) for about a day but then reverted back to even to odd slippage. Unfortunately most of those VCDS adaptations are based on CAN protocol whereas mine is UDS. The process is different and I've had trouble finding suitable videos online to work out what to do. The Ross Tech site is not much use for UDS info either. Anyway, all the parts are now on order along with a new flywheel and crank seal which got spotted weeping during the last service.
  10. As I understand it that's total, no option to change vins after 12 months. There's an option to upgrade from 3 to 10 or unlimited at any time. It's not a time based subscription, once you've paid it's yours for ever.
  11. Assume that's the one with unlimited licences. Mine is restricted to three and was much cheaper.
  12. Not that I'm aware of. I've done it without the VCDS and it worked fine, however the service schedule had previously been set at 5000 mile intervals rather than the extended one which mine should be. This adjustment can only be made with VCDS or similar.
  13. Have finally got the funds to get the slipping clutches replaced on my DQ200 DSG and I'm also going to get the cam belt & water pump done at the same time. Current mileage 168k. I thinking I'll also get the gearbox & Mech fluid changed at the same time, even though they are supposedly able last the life of the car????? Just how long do Skoda think my car will last I wonder or indeed how long is that piece of string? Listed elsewhere on this forum the service data shows G 055512 A2 oil for the gearbox but I've not found a definitive listing for the Mech oil. Current favorite is G 004000 M2 oil which is generally used in power steering applications. Is this the right one - bearing in mind that this oil needs to be mineral, not synthetic? Additionally, does anyone know the drain & refill capacity of the DQ200 gearbox? I believe the Mech should be about 1 litre when drained insitu, and about 1.2 litres if dismantled. ps - I won't be doing any of this work myself, I'm leaving it to someone with all the kit & experience.
  14. More than happy with my 1.6tdi. 168K miles and still running sweetly. ( Even with a DSG & DPF! )
  15. If you look at my chart earlier in this thread, it seems to be an annual event. The mpg recorded is the rolling average of 4 fill ups rather than individual tankfuls. I can only guess that its a combination of temperature, humidity, lights on, & change to winter fuel. I fill up at the same petrol station, usually the same pump even and have done for the last 3 years, every Friday morning. As you say 55mpg is pretty good.
  16. Winter deterioration in fuel economy has certainly kicked in. Consumption up by 15% since end of August. Currently sitting at around 55mpg.
  17. Poor battery is always a consideration. It was for me. Once changed problem fixed. I did a cranking test in advance and the voltage drop was more than recommended. I think anything below 10v is considered bad but i'm sure others can advise.
  18. They look good in black. Mine are still original silver colour, not so good.
  19. That's a good price. I think Sachs were an OE option also.
  20. I bought these from Autodoc last year. They work fine, easy to fit and comfortable enough. I paid £58 each but they've now gone up to £74. As you said, your 1.6tdi is pleasant and boring, not worth spending a grand on. BTW the recommended dust cover kit ( 900 203 ), isn't 100% correct. The rubber cones fit but the dust covers don't. I just re-used the old ones. SACHS 318 202 Shock Absorber Rear Axle, Gas Pressure, Twin-Tube, Telescopic Shock Absorber, Top pin, Bottom eyeArticle number: 318 202
  21. This is what I've tracked over the years I've had the car. Not sure of the whys or wherefores, but the trend is summer good, winter not so, however long term getting better!
  22. My 1.6tdi DSG Estate averages 61mpg through the year, in wintertime less ( 59mpg ) in summertime more ( 63mpg ). I've never got close to 77.8mpg as stated above and I drive very sedately with 90% of my journeys sitting in 7th in lane 1 of the motorway doing 60 - 70mph.
  23. My AQS is also broken and Just wondering whether it has any influence on the cabin temperature thermostat? I need to set my climate control to about 4 degrees higher than the temperature I want, eg 24 deg to achieve 20 deg.
  24. The air con system can make it smell, particularly if you don't have it running very often. Water collects in the ducting and begins to smell after a while.
  25. I stand corrected. I was sure I'd read on here that it wasn't possible. Another model perhaps. Your new shocks could well remedy the situation. You could leave it at that and monitor the tyre wear over a period time to confirm. I'd only opt for wheel alignment if the problem looks like it is returning. No point in spending money on something that's not required.
