I was referring to the first of those, which is close to things like the radiator fan/shroud and engine cover, lots of nearby plastic. See if there's any sign of melting or scorching to those areas.

Sorry, wasn't trying to alarm you with reference to compression, it's just a quick and easy thing to eliminate if you have a tester. If you get a fault code for the same cylinder, consider moving that fuel injector to a different cylinder to see if the fault moves with it.

Read the fault codes again, as a first step. Do you own a compression tester?

For the diesel, consider creating an account on either fuelly (https://www.fuelly.com/) or spritmonitor (https://www.spritmonitor.de/en/) to keep an online record of all your mpg data. Using brim-to-brim numbers would make it much more 'real' than the day-to-day observations of trip consumption figures. At least with fuelly, and probably with the other one, they do a little signature thing so the current average is constantly displayed with every post you make. For someone so interested in this parameter, it would make sense to do this, I think.

I shouldn't think there are many people who've tried it, and even fewer who could say for certain what would've happened differently if they hadn't. Why not just try it and see if it has any effect on oil usage rate? If it doesn't, no point in continuing, if it does you'll have some data to work with in your decision about the next oil change.
