Wonder if the newer released Skoda unit(W2-D780S) has any improvements over the older VW(W2-D720V) units.

did anyone get TomTom 6 (or 7) running on this unit? I'm a great fan of TomTom and doubt I could live with any other Nav package. Both versions run fine on my PDA and I'm sure I could get it working - BUT the unknown quantity is Win CE 4.2 (it also says WM5 in some adverts). I'm not sure which version of WIndows is really on it. Seriously tempted.... And it's my birthday in a week

Tomtom 7 will not run on the system, a windows CE version was never released. Tomtom 6 maybe possible, but someone will need to hack the installer so that it thinks its installing on supported hardware. Tomtom are now upto Version 8, and this will only be supported on their own portable units, so that wont work either.

TBH I would try the software mentioned already in this thread, at least you may have more upto date maps. Tomtom 5 will install, but the maps are now very dated, as are the TT6 ones.

Hi

Ive just emiled the people at Witson re the skoda unit re a uk outlet.

They have replied stating the only person is a company called "them2you" this is the same person that is selling on ebay e.s.global .

Has anyone bought one of these units from this seller and if so how did it go .

I want to get one but im just a little unsure as like you all dont want to waste my hard earned.

Hope someone can help

Regards Whoosh:thumbup:

I ordered one of them last Monday so time will tell.

Would you please stop this thread! I am trying to save for a family holiday and with this thread ever popping up it is going to see my family sitting in the car watching the mfd2 dvd I'm ever more tempted toget.

This is the same chap I ordered from very good service from him so you shouldnt worry he does display his phone number which many ebay sellers dont.

he seems very responsive - I asked a couple of questions regarding storage (SD) and USB functionality and how to run any version of TomTom. He acknowledged them instantaly and is finding out more.

I also mailed Bob at Witson to see if they have plans for a toolkit for firmware upgrade eg. to go to WM6 (a la the thriving home developing PDA Phones space). Alas he said "No or people will break the unit!". Oh he of little faith ;)

I'm with you mannyo on the v5 and 6 maps being out of date.

If I can get WM5 or 6 on the device I can definitely (maybe) get TT7 to install. The question is if there is a file browser on the device in which to execute a cab file or run a native exe.

I don't know the programatic dependencies but it even run on CE 4.2.

I have a version of TT7 which runs on WM5 and WM6 and any PDA and can install to main memory or storage card. (And it didn't do that originally :P).

No real Win CE device to test but I might load up the emulator in MS Visual Studio. There's something to try tonight! It's slow but amusing to see an exact copy of your PDA running on a PC....

The seller sold it to me with TomTom which would not run correctly I have since installed IGO8 onto the SD

Where did you get the IGO8 software, I can't seem to find it?

Rich

TomTom 6 does run on this device (I beleive the unit in the thread is the same as we are discussing here).

I'm hopefully going to prove today if in principal a modded installer for TomTom 7 will run in a CE 4.2 environment. Getting it to run on the Witson unit is still another matter, but it's one step closer.....

Anyone with one of these going to the Awesome RR day???

While I was in the car the other day, I reached down to my standard Stream HU and being 6 foot and even with the seat position quite far back, I can easily reach the knob in the center.

Now with the Witson unit, there are 2 knobs are at the top, which if you look at your center console is an inch or so further back than the bottom of the unit because its on a slant. This means it's more difficult to reach the right knob without leaning forward and for me, it would be impossible without shifting forwards in my seat or leaning over on the left knob because its so much further away.

I thought it was worth mentioning.

I thought it came with a remote - so you didn't have to reach all that way...:D

It would be great if folks stick to the original Witson unit and stop confusing this thread with dreams of other units!

I found a Windows CE 5 emulator but can't get it to run iGO 8 or any version of TomTom (5,6 or 7) - for TT it will install but will not run the .exe (this is not a valid CE app...)

Pah! Must be doing something wrong - several folks have said it works for them.

Or was that the Russian device, or the other one.....

PS can one of the folks who actually owns the Skoda Witson varian confirm what version of CE it has. I've read 4.2 and 5 in various web sites...cheers

From what I seen, the ones that have a user interface ie skoda branded ones they run 4.2 and the ones that actualy look like windows CE its 5.0.

As for not reaching the buttons, i'm 5'6" and I can reach the buttons comfortably without stretching too much. Must be you loooong legs Auberne ;)

Which ones if any can you upload the "safety camera" database on can any one advise. I've posted a link to one which I think you might be able to as it will run tom tom but I'm not the sure. I may just use the safe option and stay with my tom tom

Anyone know of any parking sensors that can be used with the reverse display on this unit?

Cheers

oh, that's a good point - I have factory fitted sensors with the Stream MP3 head unit.

Completey missed that.....dammit that's a minus point towards the Witson (and probably others except the RNS510)......

They might work with it, i don't know? I've never come across parking sensors before so i don't know if there's just one common connector or various types depending on which manufacturer.

The bloke on ebay could probably tell us, or anyone on here? i'll ask the question...

They don't work with the RNS510 either... yet. Nor does the Climatronic display.

You will still get the beeps from the parking sensors though, just no graphics display. TBH I never use the graphics display anyway and only use the beeps.

Hi,

Has anyone heard of the MVD brand? It seems they make units that look OEM and they are made for many car brands. Also Skoda.

The sites are russian or rumanian.

dvm-1320_g_new.jpg

I can only find these sites: MAGNITOLA.COM.UA - Ìàãíèòîëû øòàòíûå - Skoda

PhantomRu Øòàòíûå ãîëîâíûå óñòðîéñòâà DVM-1320 è DVM-1320G äëÿ àâòîìîáèëåé SKODA OCTAVIA

It seems the units have all the specs we would want, but I have no idea about quality and price.

Has anyone looked into this?

Hans

That unit has been mentioned earlier in the thread, I believe Igorr has one in his Octavia.
