I'm the smart guy Saint

I'm waiting for the new car next week then order the Witson

bet you are busting to get your new CR TDi

I contact ROD for my D780S, and he said me, that he will have stock, next week! Any one can upload any photos?

T1000... you have a PM :)

Something to check when you recieve your deliveries from Ebay. I just opened mine and the manual says "VW Magotan Model". I am unable to connect it until next weekend (I still need to buy the facia plate), but what concerns me is the title of the unit, especially as those who bought it via this guy ordered the Skoda version (Green LED's). There is no model number on the unit (I was expecting to see W2-D780S and this one appears to be the W2-D720V from the Witson website.

If someone can check theirs when they get it, else I wont unpack the rest of the stuff and get back to the guy.

If it is the wrong one, I for one will be returning it at no cost, as the seller clearly stated in the description, model and the photo that it was the skoda one, hence the reason for me buying it. I've mailed him to confirm the delivery is correct as per the order, but I think it will not be or at least I will not be able to confirm until I power it up.

Mine has the same manual, i might hook mine up tomorrow and see.

Thanks mate.. Worth having a look. if all of them are wrong, then we have a decent case to go back to the vendor here. Might be a fuss over nothing, I hope so.

I have a feeling the manual is probably the same for them all. Maybe no Skoda ones made. However i'll hold my ebay feedback until tomorrow.

Oh, the other beef I have is that the Interlink delivery company left a 'left in a safe place' note through my door this afternoon when it was delivered. They climbed onto my wall and dumped the package in the back garden on a metal frame I have for storing plants.

It was raining when I got home and all i had was a wet box. Wrapped in clingfilm it was, but still.. idiots.

Regarding the manual, you may be right. It does say inside, for connection to VW only and the model number on the Witson site is clearly different. I'm not positive.

ive had a few of them, "left in brown bin" was one. thank god it wasnt collection day!

My beef with interlink (as i use them a lot) was at one stage even though my stuff was "next day delivery" it was more like 2 or 3 days!

No need to worry about the manual saying it's a VW one, the unit i have is the Skoda one so it looks like they just didn't bother pdating the manual to say Skoda... I doubt you will find much use for the manual anyway as all the menus are pretty easy to work out and the "English" in the manual isn't the best i have come across :)

Just off to tidy up the cablling for mine so will post a few pics later on, the green lighting is certainly green, but doesn't seem to have had any attempt made to match it to the colour of the Skoda backlighting

I'm eagerly awaiting the pics Wonderbadger. Which Nav software did you install in the end?

Right, it's all in and working quite well...

Taken a few pics that I thought might be helpful to others who are going to be fitting the kit today and some ideas as to where things seem to fit ok.

For those who are wondering what connectivity the unit has, here's a pic of the label on top of the unit which shows all the options...

I started off taking the glovebox out to see where I might be able to hide the wiring for the unit because as you will see form one of the later images, there is rather a large cable harness the sits between the original quadlock and the radio, theres also a separate black-box that looks after the remote control functions if you have a multi-function steering wheel.

After a bit of trial routing I decided to take the top-box out of the dashboard and the install the GPS receiver on top of one of the dashboard cross-members (unfortunately this isn't steel so had to use the double sided pad suplied with the unit.) The lead for the receiver is long enough to run to most places in the car which means this also needs tidying up and strapping down somewhere. The next pic shows where I located the receiver, you can just see it to the upper right of the coil of wire which i then zip-tied to the air duct.

to give you a clue as to the amount of wiring that needs to be hidden, here's a quick pic of the harness plugged into the original wiring, there are also the leads out of the back of the unit which need hiding.

100_1159.jpg

If you feed the quadlock so it sits near the topbox location the harness plugs in and can be secured quite easily around that area. Any loose cabling can be tidied up and zip-tied to ducts etc to make sure they didnt foul any of the various flaps and motors which live under there.

Once all that was done it was an easy job to just plug the unit in and slide it back without it fouling on any of the cabling so it seems to be quite succesful. The location of the GPS receiver works well and gets a good signal as shown below, this compares well with my previous PDA based Satnav which didnt get as strong a signal.

Finally, just another image of it in place. I do think it looks quite well integrated and not cheap and nasty like some units I have seen.

100_1145.jpg

The whole unit feels nice and solid and is quite responsive. The interface is by no means perfect but it is functional and once you get used to how it works its perfectly usable. I am sure there are better units out there but at the price i think this does a very good job.

I haven't been able to get any shots of the lighting at night yet but will get that sorted later on if anyone is interested in seeing how it looks.

Fantastic Images and info wonderbadger. Thanks. How long did it take you to install? Was it relatively easy? Alos, How do you install the GPS software?

Cheers

thanks WB!

Another pic showing the lighting at night, it's not a great pic as the greens look very similar, the actual green of the Witson unit is a richer green compared to the Skoda lighting if that makes sense...

busterboy, it took about and hour to install and make tidy once I had decided where I was going to put the cabling, easy job really as pretty much plug and go. Would take a little lnger if you wanted to use the ipod lead as that would need routing somewhere you could plug the ipod into (I don't have an ipod and don't see a major need for it as it will play MP3 DVDs which give a decent amount of music!)

Great job Wonderbadger, Install looks just as good as the OEM.

Did you see whether it does anything on the maxidot or am I hoping too much?

Farmer

Farmer, unfortunately I would have hard time seeing if it did anything on the maxidot as I don't have one :)

All the indications from the GolfMkV forums where there is a huge thread on this say that it doesn't work with maxidot, as I have never had the function, I don't miss it! :D

more stuff

Looks nice, but essentially just a radio at the moment? Where's the sat nav / guidance?

Dave.

I like the look of this unit, the only thing putting me off is the poor interface.

Does it have to look like this or is there a choice of skins?

Can the animated bars on the tuner be turned off?

The MP3 navigation looks well, how can we say basic, but whats it like to actually use?

Does the display dim with the headlights on, or can it be set to do this? If not how bright is it when its dark?

Can you get back to the Windows CE interface to run other apps?

I am using IGO 8 which I previously had on my PDA but I haven't got it running at the right resolution yet so haven't done any pics of it (its the same software shown on the pics by T1000 at the start of this thread). All I did to get it working was copy the program files directory from the PDA ontot he memory card where the maps and data were already stored, then went into navigation options on the radio and aimed it at the .exe file. The resolution is easily fixed once I get my hands on the right config files.

The radio interface is a little annoying with the animated bars but I will only see them on short journeys because I will have satnav on for any long ones so I can detour if needed (radio/mp3 still plays in the background).

Mp3 navigation when the mp3s are on a DVD is using the DVD navigation menu which is a little clunky as it would have been much easier to use the scrollbars already on the screen (these don't do anything navigation wise other than show where you are relative to the folder).

The "Brit" button on the left of the unit is used to dim the display at night, doesn't seem to be an automatic option but it does work well and can be made so it isn't dsitracting at night.

The guys in the golfmkv forum are starting to look at if its possible to develope alternative firmware for this and have a list of things they would like to get sorted. while it isn't the best interface it does do enough for what I need it for and so far seems to do it easily. It would be nice to have more functions/options but it is usable as it is.
