Contemplating buying the New Talex as its blue warning LED will be perfect in my noisy car (to loud to hear the speaker alerts).

A couple of questions:

Is the standard updater from the Talex.co.uk site Vista compatible?

How much are the updates? I have seen updates for £29 per year, but when I go to the Talex site it shows me £3.95 per month.

Is the database any good or are there better ones out there these days?

Or should I look elsewhere? Reading lots of bad things about their customer service and am finding Adam Blair to be the most annoying of spammers.

Chris

Chris if you are looking for a new Radar detector/SatNav/Thingymugig, I can’t recommend the TomTom system highly enough. I bought the 940 Live last year and it is invaluable. The camera data base comes from Road Angel (which seems to be as good if not better than any other) and the intelligent IQ routes are peerless in the Sat Nav world. Its real time data means mobile cameras can be picked up and relayed to your system via it’s inbuilt Sim card as well as real time traffic info. Much more accurate than the TMC system (I use both simultaneously and the TomTom is many times more accurate). Plus you get Google search and many other features. Very customisable for warning sounds as well. Not cheap to buy or to subscribe to the services, but they have many models in their range that have the camera data base. If you just want a Sat Nav, the Road Angels themselves are very nice to look at and are a reasonably price.

I should have added their customer service is pretty good, at least via email

I have Pocket GPS on my TomTom satnav. Problem is that the loud car is just so loud that I need something really noticeable to grab my attention when I am making "reasonable progress". I have a Talex unit anyway, but the appeal is the blue LED which should stand out a lot more than the flashing green display of the original unit.

Chris

Chris the database seems very much up to date, i personally havent found one new camera or mobile trap that isnt on the database for hell of a long time which is a good thing. I have used road angel before now which was pretty much up to date and not a bad database, it was just the renewal price that put me off. i also use a database from a gps site but have been disappointed in the number of locations that have disappeared off of it due to a new rule that if it isnt reported again after x amount of months that it be removed.

At the end of the day i would look at it this way, how many miles do you do? if you do tons and need a sat nav that you will be paying for map updates on then go for (like lady e mentioned above) the tomtom 940 as it would overall seem the cheapest option. I myself cant justify buying one with how little miles i do these days so will keep with the talex.

Another option i have just thought of is the road angel navigator, my boss has one and the times ive used it its done the job, but did take me to a couple of places like a moth to the fire...

Hi

Hope you don't mind a question or two, but you seem very switched on with the Talex / Novus detectors. I have the TomTom One XL with PGPS speed trap locations, but I find the database quite flaky in places. I use the Talex in the car with the TomTom. Trouble is that neither the TomTom or the Talex make enough noise to be heard if I am on a mission in the noisy car, so I thought a new Talex for £40 would be ideal with its bright blue LED.

I do a fair bit of travelling around the country on consulting work trips, so see a lot of new to me roads.

I did wonder about the existing unit I have as well, an original Talex / Novus style unit. The unit was originally Talex, It had free updates for life on it, but then when Talex and Novus parted company, it updated for a while then I got an email notifying me that I needed to download a new updater at which point, I lost my free updates for life. Not sure if this was a snide by Talex to get my subscription when I could have stayed with Novus or not.

So to the question: If I download the Novus updater, will it allow me to run the Novus Database on my old full fat Talex unit?

I PMd this as well seeing as the email notifications are down at the moment.

Chris

glad someone else sees what im seeing about the database on the tomtom, i got fed up re reporting locations because of their new policy. fair enough i dont mind reporting new locations, but it seems its only me in my area who reports them.

I have sent you an pm answering the questions you pm'd so hopefully that will help.

just tried http://www.talex.co.uk/ to see what the latest data number is and got a page

Domain Default page - If you see this page, it means that you have set up your web server for serving a new site, but have not uploaded the site content yet. etc from Plesk software.

can anyone see the talex site or know why it is down?

I got straight on just now. Latest database details:

Chris

yes, they're back up now. They were down for around a day because I tried earlier too.

May have got swamped with response to the free Talex offer in the latest spams.

Chris

what was the latest offer, not had any emails from them for a while now.

Giving away 1000 Talex units on the basis they will make up the money from database subscriptions.

Chris

Do not do it....................... :(

The speaker in my Talex died so I have just had it replaced at Halfords. The muppet behind the counter told me they had no stock so I showed him the one I had reserved on their website, he then agreed that they did have some! Grr!

You'd be even more annoyed if you reserved it, someone got one just before you, and they then said they had none :)

Talex aren't listed on Halford's website now, so it looks like they don't sell them anymore...

Explains why they were listed at ~£40 a while ago, they must have been wanting to get rid of the stock.

Halford's website has Novus hardware now.
