Talex/Novus Database Discussion

Featured Replies

from what i gather from talex the new one runs on a completley different database thing to the original talex. yes the all the locations are the same but the programming/coding is different so i dont personally see it working unless someone wants to try (i wouldnt).

Cheers for that, do you happen to know if the unit holds more information than the old Talex full fat and are there any other differences apart from the two LED's on the units display?

I'm either gonna buy a new Talex or try to source an old one off somewhere like e-bay.

I beleive the newer ones hold more as it was one of the pitches talex was running when the new one came out. If you after an old one give ww_vrs a shout on here i know he has one for sale.

Latest Talex database v.9054 file size 3356496.

Latest Novus Database is 9054 size 1.36MB. Text taken from their web site: "On the database this past few weeks we have added 2 Fixed and 3 Mobile. Removed 1 Fixed, 6 Mobile and updated 8 Mobile locations and speed changes."

thanks lee.

Just looking on a previous page (1) someone wanted to know if the new Talex device will run off a free Novus update,

Has anyone tried this? and if so what was the result?

Also has anyone over the past few months noticed any difference between the old Talex unit and the new one in the way of holding more locations etc?

Just debating weather to go out and buy a new unit as mine has started to go on the blink!

Same position here - running an old Talex off the Novus database, and it is just starting to misbehave. Trying to work my way round the Talex website which is not very inspiring. Am I right in that I can part exchange my old talex for a new device at £67, but then would have to pay another £29 for updates straight away. From what I remember the original Talex included the first year's updates. This compares with £72.95 for a Novus Delta with free updates.

Yes Talex still doing their offer.

nice find there!!!

less than half price of the £127 on the rip off talex site :-)

Yes their site needs updating, however have you rung them up and asked????

no point ringing if it's so much cheaper elsewhere. If they can't even be bothered to update the web site...

Your Canterbury News has run a short article on Talex. Seems some of their customers are less than impressed. Judge for yourself here.

You will get that with no matter what company, i could issue a small claims against smith n bloggs bendy pens (fictionous co for example) most companies will settle out of court as its more expensive to send someone to the court for the day to fight it.

But anyhow it be interesting to follow.

The guy who owns Talex doesn't exactly seem like business man of the year though unfortunately.

i know what you are saying, it took him forever to put up a poor website, from a chat a while back with staff at talex the new one was meant to have gone up (2008) but still not up. It seems even through he says he has gone to professionals that he has used a template in windows and thrown it together in his lunch period.

Ok he saved the talex brand, the database section work their back sides off but are let down by the way customers are treated. If they got the CS section sorted out (which is better now than it worse but not perfect) then it would help the brand further.

The biggest thing they missing out on is selling Talex's in places like tescos and argos (iirc i havent seen any in there).

Halfords still selling new Talex for £58.71p

Talex GPS Safety Camera Detector from Halfords Price £58.71

Just spotted this thread after buying a Novus GPS Rider with lifetime updates from ALDI for under £45 (reduced). Shame I'd recently got a Snooper S2Neo for £35 from Misco. £10 extra gets loads more benefits asuming database remains accurate.

Apols if you already know this.

Does anyone know when the latest Talex update will be out? I was under the impression it was every Fri.

Just gone to update mine now and the file size is the same as last Fri 3356568 bytes Version number the same also 9055.

should be friday but has occasionly been monday. Have a feeling the database guy is on holiday this week as i cant get hold of him.

Travelled on the M55/M6 on Sunday where a SPECS system is protecting roadworks. The Talex (updated the previous Friday) completely missed it. Pocket GPS World (PGPSW) picked all four cameras up.

I don't doubt that the Talex database team are working hard but I have yet to find one instance where the Talex database is more accurate than PGPSW. However, I've now identified quite a a number of cases where it is less accurate and, therefore, potentially more problematic.

Beefheart,

Just read the above, Do you happen to know how the Novus database fairs against the PGPSW in comparison to the Talex database?

Well just tried to update my Talex again and found that the database is still the same as last week.

I know people are entitled to their holidays but you would think that if it is the case that the "database guy" has gone away there would be someone there who could do his job and update it for him. NOT IMPRESSED!

Pity they can't sort their web page out to show exactly whats going on with their database's like Novus do, it would prob save me the time of plugging device in and waiting to update only to find its the same database!

I do like the Talex but you'd think that after all this time they would have sorted their web page out!

Will now have to update with Novus as they do have one for this week!

Just to throw in my 2 pennyworth ( is that saying giving my age away !!), I have the latest Talex (bought Oct 08) and paid £29 for the updates.

I cannot download the latest database, countless calls and E Mails to both their technical & customer service finally led me to the conclusion that I was being fobbed off big time.

Everything was either the fault of the operator (me !!) or the kit (my brand new laptop).

The do not call back when promised, the tech support is of the "turn off/turn on" variety and ....well I am just @+%$£&* off !! :thumbdwn:

Keep away from Talex !

I'm slowly starting to feel the same as you, thats why i'm wondering if anyone is getting better results with the Novus database.
