Talex/Novus Database Discussion

Featured Replies

the novus website has a vista usb driver, which they do not guarantee, but suggest you tryout, The talex site has no vista driver the last time I looked. It is very important to load the driver and then reboot to register it before ever connecting the talex lead, otherwise some other non-working driver may be loaded and needs to be de-registered or removed before the correct driver can then be correctly loaded. The delta is the correct update to use for the talex lite.

Hi

Can anyone be of any help here. I bought a Talex lite a couple of years ago and it never had the data cable supplied. I have recently bought the right cable at an extortionate price and am looking to try and get updated.

You need to buy one from talex or novus and not any old lead off ebay, ive had 2 leads off ebay which never worked and ended up ordering one from talex.

There is talk on here about cutting the lead and joing the opporsite wires together, but this never worked for me neither.

no update yet from talex this week

i think they were working late last night on them and are now awaiting the IT lot to place it on the download server.

Well I FINALLY got my Talex Elite successfully updated :woot:

(well, not actually gone out with it yet - but it's powered back up at least, and gets a GPS lock still :))

Even got the update app running on Vista, which I wasn't hopeful about.

Followed the really quite logical instructions at:

Novus GPS - Database/Downloads

I see talk of no updates above? Well the one for my, cough, 'Novus Alpha' had 09 09 02 against it - from that do I take it that it's a 2nd Sept 09 update :rubchin:

Cheers,

Steve

IT means the 2nd update in Sept 09. Quite often these seem to jump, missing numbers out. I'm pretty sure the 1st update in September didn't appear!

There are updates fairly often on the Novus site, but they don't occur the same day each week, so you just need to check regularly.

whats the latest talex update, not much info on this

jim

I have an old Talex Lite that hasn't been updated for 2 years.

Which software do i use?

the novus delta works on the talex lite and gives you the majority of the functions of the old full talex.

See the link in my previous post Jay. It has all you need there. Follow the 'Novus Delta' info.

Latest Talex update 9092

I am having a few issues with Talex and few opinions would be very much appreciated.

For the last 3 years I have been using my full fat old school Talex and it has been great. Last Sunday I unplugged the Talex from my cigarette lighter and the bit that fits into the cigarette lighter fell apart in my hand. I managed to put it back together but I could not get it to work for love or money. Therefore I thought that I had broken the in car cable lead.

So today I brought a shiny new Talex from Halfords for a bargain price of £40. Very excitedly took it home. Took it out of the box and my initial thoughts were that the in car connector does not fit in very smoothly compared to my old one. I tried it in the car and it didn’t work......I then tried my sat nav and two phone chargers and neither of these worked either..

I then tried in my girlfriends car, the phones and sat nav worked fine. However, neither of the Talex's worked. However, both of the Talex's work fine when connected to my laptop.

Having spent all afternoon trying to work out where the problem is I now feel drained. I guess it would seem that I have a few issues here and one is probably my cars cigarette lighter is broken and the other could be a problem with the connector on my new Talex.

Thoughts and opinions would be very welcome?

Right for the poster about it not working in the car, check the 10amp fuse hasnt blown in the fuse box, if not check the fuse in the talex lead.

For the poster about talex update *BRAND NEW* Talex

Thanks for that, I am going to get a friend to look at the amp in the car. As when it comes to cars I am pretty hopeless.

I have changed the amp in the old talex for a new amp that still doesnt work in either. Can you confirm that I am putting it back together property by having the amp at the top, then the spring and then the white metal bit.

When it comes to computers I know my stuff but cars and electronics I am hopeless with.

that sounds correct to me.

9094 up now :)

Database now at 9095

I've spotted a boxed Talex Lite for £15.00, but without data cable. I undertand that with the cable I can update the firmware and load the latest DB for free - is this correct?

It looks to me like the missing data cable is a simple 4 way 2.5mm plug to USB cable, but from where can I get the wiring diagram so I can make my own lead?

yes, you need the cable to update. Unfortunately it's not just a question of wiring, the cable has a serial to usb chip embedded in the plastic.

The speaker in my Talex died so I have just had it replaced at Halfords. The muppet behind the counter told me they had no stock so I showed him the one I had reserved on their website, he then agreed that they did have some! Grr!

My question is how do I move my subscription to the new device, the updater won't talk to the new device as it has a different serial no. Will Talex swap it or should I just cancel and start again?

email talex and explain it to them what has happened, personally i would just send it back to them and let them send a replacement out.

Has anyone else spotted the "coming soon" Eye Plus on the Novus website ?

I guess it is more for commercial/fleet applications but an interesting bit of kit

nonetheless ??

I've just completed a round trip from the NE of Scotland to the NE of England. As usual, for comparison, I loaded the latest PGPSW database onto the Garmin 250w and the Talex database onto my Lite.

On the outward journey both units picked up every fixed camera. On the return, however, the Talex kept 'losing' satellite contact because of heavy rain and cloud cover. As a direct result a number of fixed cameras were completely missed. The Garmin performed flawlessly keeping satellite contact at all times.

As no mobiles were seen, it was impossible to compare that element of the database.
