Yes I am an idiot....

Featured Replies

Right.. Not going to blame my wife, mom

or dog but in a moment of madness I accidentally put £10 about 11 litres of petrol in to my fabia vrs. It was almost empty when I did it and I immediately realised and put just under 35 litres of diesel in filling it up.

Should it be ok? I have driven about 15 miles and feels fine, do I need to do anything?

Thanks for any help in advance

kirk

ye should be fine just keep topping it up with diesel, might run abit rough but as long as you got more diesel than petrol should be ok

Yes - Please beat me, Simeon , about the head with a large stick!!! :D

luke did this a couple of months ago in his tdi fabia,he recons it runs better than ever now!!!!!!! Tho i seem to recall a little petrol in a diesel occasionally is good for it? Don't know how true this is,and wouldn't recommend everyone does it but anyone know if there is any truth in this?

Lucky you saw it when you did. Could have been an expensive nightmare!

Like has already been said, continue to fill up with diesel as often as poss to keep diluting the petrol. May run like sh!t for a while though. ;)

You can get away with this on the PD engines - but don't try it on the newer CR Diesels !!

It might be a bit smokier than usual, adding some fuel addative may help a bit, such as the Millers stuff. Actualy some old cars such as our 91 Cit AX said in the handbook to put a gallon of unleaded to a full tank of diesel in cold winters to stop waxing up. At least you did not have a full tank of petrol or it would have costed yopu to get it drained and disposed of and a new tank of Diesel.

Don't worry my dad has filled up with petrol a few times on my mothers diesel cars. :rotz: Never happened to mine yet!

Thanks for all the replies, consider my head well and truly beaten with a very large stick!

Following the 15 mile drive with no problems I came back to the car after 3 hours and it struggled to start but did. then after getting home and parking up I had to pop back out and move it and it really struggled to start taking a few long turns of the key and having the accelerator pedal pressed down....

Im guessing I should expect this sort of problem for a while? I am naturally worried about causing more damage..

Thanks again,

Kirk

Not at some shell stations, Black is the super unleaded, Ive spent many a long hour draining tanks from City link vehicles that filled up with the wrong stuff at their nearest garage. The only problem being the ford engines then needed fuel pumps as the seals in them were not petrol tollerent

Dont beat yourself up too much there are more of us on here than will admit to it , that have put the wrong juice in their tanks

ps I admit it

I WILL SAY WHAT I LIKE, AND LIKE WHAT I BLOODY WELL SAY !

Off Topic - Harry Enfield?

In the old days before ‘Winter diesel’ (it is automatically included in your fuel these days, so no need to worry about the stuff) drivers (mainly truck ones) used to put 10% petrol into their tank to stop the diesel freezing……..well gelling.

My wife done this with my first Fabia vRS, put anout £20 of petrol in. She only realised when the car started running rough as **** and then conked out!!! :thumbdwn: I drained the tank, changed the fuel filter and it ran as sweet as a nut till i sold it 2yr and about 30,000mls later!!!

Should be fine!

I bought one of these off E-Bay less than £5

My local petrol station has 4 pumps at each fueling point and each one has 2 black and 2 green pipes, only one is Diesel the other is Super unleaded . When I suggested how stupid that was as customers could fill up with the wrong type of fuel the reply was " people do it nearly every day "..........To$$er :(

Ok.. Just wanted your thoughts, car starts perfectly from cold I.e when I go to work, fine again when I leave work. However it's struggling to start when it's warm, I have stopped off on the way home for a few minutes, got back in and I have to turn the key for about 4 seconds and press the accelarator down to get it to start, then it runs fine again.

I have only done about 80 miles since putting the petrol in, have topped it up twice ( with diesel!) and redex diesel treatment. Should this sort itself out? If I had caused any major damage would it have broke down by now?

Thanks for any more advice,

Kirk

It's going to misbehave for a while until the petrol in the tank is diluted away. GIve it some diesel every day, as the more diesel you put in the more dilute the petrol becomes.

Also drive it "un-economically" if that makes sense, so you get rid of the tank of contaminated diesel sooner rather than later.

I did too. When stuck under the filler flap it obscures the tyre pressure sticker. And when the bodywork gets hot in the sun, the glue softens allowing the device to move. I discovered this the hard way when I tried unsuccessfully to close the filler flap recently. I have now binned mine. :(

There are few other devices that are supposed to stop you being 'such an idiot!' Auto-Express Mag heve tested them this year.

On a positive note, you payed less that £1 a litre for your fuel, so its not all bad news.

I done it to a brand spanking new Peugeot 407 Diesel at work, put 10 litres of petrol into an almost empty tank. The car ran for around 10 miles, then conked out. Guy had it less than half an hour

Needless to say i got my head chewed and lost my bonus but hey i admit fully i was an idiot for not checking
