THE DEFINITIVE Top gear Skoda Yeti thread!

Featured Replies

Well I've had 3 people ask about mine today, and that in a town of 2.3k population, most of which probably don't want TG.

Smug, moi................................................... :giggle:

I've booked in 5 demos today on the Yeti which is a LOT and probably 60% of people walking through the showroom have stopped at the Yeti and mentioned that it was on TopGear last night. TopGear must have a MASSIVE audience.

I hear the potential £ £ £ £ £ ringing on your cash register. :giggle:

Good luck, lets just hope you don't get let down by 'lead time /production issues'

No, haven't you heard? It's about to be axed.

Enjoyable bit of TV, not often I say that about 'Last of the Summer Wine for the 21st Century' (AKA Top Gear).

Children, children!

Spot the (retired) teacher :giggle:

Probably before your time if you like Top Gear, but in my opinion the last decent Top Gear broadcast was by Raymond Baxter!

(I must admit though my 8 year old grandson raves about Top Gear so that is probably its target audience.)

Chris

Did Raymond Baxter actually ever present Top Gear? Angela Rippon was the first presenter but I do not recall R.B. ever presenting it

'Tomorrow's World' and the The Farnborough Airshows must have been his forte.

He sadly passed away last September aged 84.

he is a scouser using the mantra of "drive it like its stolen":giggle::giggle::giggle:

You and James May should start up a double act his 'Anti Scouser' jibe at the end of the show was equaly moronic.

I think some folk are confusing Top Gear with its predecessor "Wheelbase"

Not that I remember that far back...

My grandad must have told me about it.... ;)

Did anyone else notice that the Yeti was fitted with a towbar? Not only did the Ferrari get trounced around Donnington but it was by a towcar!

Fred

It's one way of winning a race I suppose -- have a road surface that the other car can't drive over without nearly coming to a standstill. lol

"Wheelbase" was a programme about cars. Top Gear is an ego trip for the presenters and has little to do with proper car testing. Fifth Gear is (slightly) more useful.

Fortunately the Yeti came out of JCs fiasco with flying colours. Pity he was not stopped for driving while eating an ice cream.

No- Wheelbase was a cure for insomnia. TG is a national institution and a huge earner for the BBC and I enjoy it hugely. But because I have car anorak tendencies I also read the serious stuff like Autocar for the important facts (which are rather dull for a mass audience). If JC drives a Yeti whilst eating an ice cream in a burning building on private land for a TV stunt Ithink that is JC's concern. I will confess to eating ice creams myself - in season. Is it illegal ? Cripes.

bloody good result, i thought.

bet the bloke getting the tattoo was sore the next day

as for firemen climbing through the car... just proves how tough the interior is in a slightly more amusing way.

icecream in a furnace.. the aircon works well

the only negative thing he said was about the waiting time to get one but that will just make folks want one more.

got mine so :p

the whole point of topgear appears to be to provide basic information about cars, and to make it interesting.

not bore the pants off viewers with facts and figures you can get from a sales brochure.

whatever, it certainly brought the yeti into focus

i've been parking at work since july last year and only close co workers have asked about it.

today there was a group of 8 from the office upstairs peering into the windows of it at lunchtime and 4 people i've never spoken to before were asking what i thought of it.

i was thinking...tell 'em it's ****e to keep it more exclusive... nah, tell 'em how good it really is and watch the faces coz they can't get one for ages :giggle: :giggle:

personally, i love the show and look forward to sunday evenings.

keep it up jezza.

You keep saying this, so now prove it!!

No I don't. Read the thread again.

Was that you? :giggle:;)

JC's comments about the i-player were spot on too. I'm starting to wonder who the new stig is too...could it be Tiff whilst FG is off air ?

i don't think so.

he's never been sooo smooooth power sliding anything on FG :giggle:

i'm putting my money on Sabine Schmitz

Well yeti folk. I've not posted since October but still around and reading the threads. Enjoyed the TG review of our excellent car. Utter nonsense of course but there can't be any doubt that JC was impressed. JC does frustrate and delight in almost equal measure but one thing is for sure; when he approves of your car it makes you feel that little bit taller.

Mine has now covered 8k miles and just as impressive as the day I got him. Currently trying to persuade my parents to order a new Greenline to replace their Merc A class.:)

And the question to JC was "would you buy one"...............

I thought that I had read/heard somewhere that JC was going to order one to replace the XC90. Maybe I am imagining that?

Raymond Baxter did present a motoring program, though whether it was called Top Gear I don't know. Long, long ago. Talking black and white and 405 line.

Chris.

Top Gear since around the year 2003, has been wonderful entertainment for us all - certainly.

BUT, the entertainment is completely at the expense of the crucial facts that real potential car buyers are really interested in.

The original Top Gear gave us these facts and their senses of whether it was exciting or boring to drive.

Clarkson does not think the nation can even be patient enough to listen to a few minutes of facts, so he doesn't give them.

The balance is all the wrong way.

I suggest a program that gives all the facts about the car in a few minute summary, then a few minutes of driving review, then a few minutes of ownership expectations - eg, running costs, feel-good factors etc.

Fifth Gear is better in this regard, but they're all rubbish compared to the old Top Gear!

And I'm only 41.... !!!

People need to know:-

1. petrol or diesel with engine weight and position to help us with an idea of handling

2. normally aspirated or forced induction - and what type eg, turbo or super charged or both

3. weight of car with full tank and one person on board as weighed by the reviewer

4. the space in the boot - by using full sized suitcases and smaller ones to give us a clear idea

5. the full features of the seat options eg, if the seats recline, let's know about it, if they come out, let's see!

6. the full options for the car - if the car has the option of a heated screen/seats etc, tell us!

7. the reliability likeliness based on what parts are used eg, Yeti parts from VAG, therefore reliability should be good

8. drive the car off road, on road - but all roads eg, speed humps, park on Wycombe Hill and try reversing/driving up it...

9. brake test in dry and wet with measured distances (with graphics of what is good relative to the hghway code & other cars)

10. acceleration tests with 50-70 MPH included.

11. NVH test on different roads - with measured noise levels at 30, 60, 80 and 100 MPH (for Autobahns)

12. explain the suspension eg, independent all-round suspension rather than a fixed beam is important to know!

13. type of brakes - disc brakes with ABS latest version all round is crucial

14. crash test results

15. how much servicing, renewable items, insurance etc are going to cost and relative to other competitor cars...

16. how interesting was the car - a sense of occasion?

10 minutes would be a minimum, 15 minutes more acceptable, but 20 minutes would be perfect....with lots of good slow camera shots - we don't want to see the reviewer - just hear a nice voice.

Am I right about this?

Trekker (is that anything to do with captain Kirk).

I think you are seriously bonkers or are taking the pi55. This programme is not about the 10 silly points you have highlighted, people watch TG because it is a thoroughly different and entertaining programme and not a boring litany of a particular cars vital specifications. Might I suggest that you take out a subscription to the "Engineering Approach to Modern Car Construction" I am sure you will find it sufficiently moribund.

Chris.

I remember William Woollard presenting TG when it was purely a factural motoring show and Chris Goffey ..... I seem to think I've heard Raymond Baxter mentioned before as a previous TG presenter .... but according to WIkipedia ... :

Top Gear (referred to as Old Top Gear when mentioned on the present version of the show) was a car-based BBC television series produced by BBC Birmingham, and broadcast on BBC2 from 1977 to 2001. It consisted of 30-minute magazine format programmes presented by a number of people, including William Woollard, Angela Rippon, Noel Edmonds, and Jeremy Clarkson and according to them Raymond Baxter is NOT listed as a presenter ...
