Sunroof: Reasons to skip it besides cost?

Featured Replies

After two test rides and a lot of reading, I am confident that the Citigo will be a nice replacement for my 10 year old Fabia (http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/251056-citigo-compared-to-fabia-i/).

I've decided on most options, but I am not sure about the panoramic sunroof. I´ve never had a car with a sunroof before, but I guess it could be nice (lights up the cabin, lets fresh air in with less wind). Having seen it from the inside of the car I tested, I would say it's a stretch to call it "panoramic", though, and I cannot decide if I think the car looks better with or without it. It probably will make it easier to sell after a few years here in Norway.

A couple of specific questions:

1. Will a Citigo with a closed sunroof be noisier than one with a solid roof? On motorways?

2. Does it add much weight to the car?

3. Should I be worried about durability and leaks? I've seen people reporting some leaks on the up!, but it seems they can be fixed.

I hope you can help me decide :)

Hi.

1: I have driven the Citigo with a sunroof roughly 500km's and I didn't find it noisy at all. As long as it's closed and properly adjusted it should produce little noise.

My last car was a Yeti with a glass roof, and if that was covered in ice and snow it made a lot of unwanted creaking noises when driving. I would not rule out the

posibility of a few creaks and squiking noises during the winter if opting for the roof, but if you can live with that I'd say go for it.

2: I haven't seen any numbers, but I would guess the roof ads about 10 kg to the weight of the car. Nothing you will notice when it comes to petrol consumption etc.

3: Lot's of cars with sunroofs have leaked, lot's have not... Leaks can be fixed. Have the leaks you have read about on the Up been related to the roof drains?

Good luck with your Citigo! I'm considering one as my car number two, and if I get one, it will have the glass roof :-)

The sunroof is very nice.

I didn't personally get it because I didn't want the extra weight right at the top of the car (it's not just the weight, it's where it is) or chance of leaks in the future.

Yes, leaks can be fixed, but it can also be a PITA if they are not easy to fix and you get damp in the car.

I know you said not to mention cost, but it's not particularly cheap on what is a cheap car.

Out of the options, it's the only one not on the car we have.

My wife's Yeti does have the big panoramic sunroof so I know how good they are.

But that car is not for enthusiastic driving and lives in the garage so I have less concern.

Thanks for your input.

1. Since my car will be parked inside a garage during night, ice and snow will rarely build up so that should be less of a concern.

2. You seem to disagree a little on the weight. It's maybe something that you could notice if go around corners very fast? Which is something I generally don't do :)

3. Leaks and durability are my biggest concerns since part of the reason I am buying a new car is to avoid the hassle with repairs. I haven't looked very closely into the problems on the up!, but at least one of the reports traced a leaking sunroof back to very simple manufacturing errors. Maybe they're too busy at the factory and quality control suffers?

4. Price. Also a big con. For me, it adds 5-6% to the total price of the car.

Given my worries with the above, and that I have not been missing a sunroof in the past, I am leaning towards skipping it...

Thank you :)

If you have the sunroof you will tend to not use the aircon as much. If you have aircon, do you really miss a sunroof ?

The main benefit here and I had the glass roof on a honda Civic, is the amount of light the panoramic roof lets into the cabin. It really does brighten the car up especially if it is a dark coloured interior.

However I found that on summer days you tend to shut the blind because it can be like sitting in a greenhouse at times. Not a good choice if you suffer from a receding hairline as your bonce gets cooked !!

Then on winter days, you shut the blind again cause you can feel the cold from the glass roof of the car making the interior feel a lot colder. I bet you will have the blind closed more than you have it open so IMHO, looks nice but the cons outweigh the pro's. Save your money.

Also one other point to add which I was once told, apparently the major glass replacement companies do not class the roof like a windscreen so it wouldn't be covered on insurance for stone chips / cracks etc. It is considered as part of the cars body structure and not a piece of glass.

I have a small sunroof on my Fabia I, because it was there when I bought it. Sometimes it is nice during the summer, but I feel it is an extra thing that can go wrong (especially during the winter). I don't think I would care to pay extra for it.

Thank you for your opinons. I actually went ahead and ordered the car WITH the sunroof... Realized it's something I want to try and decided to leave worries aside. The car will have an extended warranty and the leaks that have been reported on up!s have apparently been easy to fix. The point with the (lack of) glass insurance is a good one, though. I don't think I want to know what it would cost to replace the entire glass roof if it should break....

This is actually something that applies to me and I have thought about it. I read somewhere that the glass will shut out 99% of UV-light so sunburn shouldn't be an issue? But have to consider it when driving with the roof open - perhaps keep a cap in the glove box :)

Is the roofline lower with a sunroof?

I did have a Panoramic Sunroof on my Scirocco. Can't remember how much extra it was (about a grand) It was nice to have but come trade in time it didn't make a jot of difference.

Is the roofline lower with a sunroof?

Shouldn't be much as the roof opens outwards IIRC ? There is probably a small height difference as there needs to be space for the blinds to slide.

Is the roofline lower with a sunroof?

It is a little lower, but I have read about tall people (I think it was in some up! forum) that don't have problems with it.

I have had lots of cars in the past with sunroofs ALL have leaked !

I'm going to avoid sunroofs like the plague from now on, I don't trust them !

Not encouraging :) Let's hope the design in the Citigo is sound!

  • 4 weeks later...

There are a few leak issues on the UP! forum hope they aren't too common as my wife is getting one on her new Elegance in a few weeks??

Dave

I personally don't like them . No real advantage over Aircon, and if open, in summer, the light coming in can cause problems.
