12V: odd location

Featured Replies

Hi ppl!

I got Octavia II 2008. Wonderful car except for 2 things: AUX input and 12V output. I am used to use my phone (with brodit.com phone holder) as navigation device and audio source. But having 12V and AUX between front seets make my car look ugly, with 2 wires across the cabin (I do not even mention - unsafe, wires around gear switch). How do you cope with that? I found that AUX issue can be resolved by using CTVSKX003 connector and little bit of manual labor. What about 12V? How do you deal with that? Install another 12V output somewhere near the steering wheel?

I plan to do the same as I did in my previous car and just tap into an used fuse in the fuse box and stick my phone charger over on the drivers side somewhere.

Best thing to do is install a 12v socket in the fuse box at the side of the dash, behind the light switch.

Piggy-back a 12v circuit with one of these: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item27bf1644ed

Use a good metal chassis fixing point for the ground connection and away you go. You can choose switched or permanent depending on what circuit you tap. There are standard and mini blade fuses in there so choose carefully. Make sure to fuse the new circuit down as appropriate. Mine is fused at 3 amps.

That's what I did to power my active Brodit holder and my Blackvue camera.

I used the heated seats fuse in my last car as it didn't have them and it was switched.

In the old car I just pushed the wire in from the front and then pushed the fused onto the wire.

Is there a better way? From behind maybe?

Phil

Piggy back fuse tap to the heated seats here too :)

For the times I plug in my phone to use as a satnav, I route the cable to the side of the gear lever and clamp it down using the lid on the storage tray infront, so it isnt loose and in the way.

I don't think VAG fuse boxes have redundant fuses like that. Using a fuse piggyback is a safer option as you will have better electrical connections.

This is the item in question.

Oooh. Thank you.

I prefer that as it's much neater and doesn't require any tapping into wires etc.

Could you make a photo of your cabling, if it is not too much bother? Thank you

Just had a look on ebay. I'm guessing I will need the mini fuse version?

Phil

There should be unused fuses in the fuse box, on my car there were about four spare switched lives. All you need to do is buy an appropriate repair wire and add it to the fuse box. I will dig out the links to a nice how to when I'm at home tonight. The repair wire only costs about £2 and you can use one wire to add two connections.

I went for 2 of each as there is a mixture of standard blade and mini blade fuses on my Superb - probably the same on the Octavia. It is surprising how few of those circuits are switched as most things are permanent live with CAN-BUS control.

I didn't have any spare fuses to play with when I looked for an additional 12v supply. But mines a different car which might explain it.

With the piggyback ones you don't need an empty socket as it splits an existing one into two outputs.

Yes, I will try doing a picture in a bit.

So all the fuses are in use? i.e. the fuse box is full?

Nope, there are plenty of slots but there aren't any terminals in the slots to accomodate a blade fuse.

That's what adding the repair wire does. it clips in from the back and adds the missing terminal. Where you have spaces you should be able to see one terminal is present but the other is empty, the repair wire comes with the terminal and clips into place. You need to undo the fuse panel and undo a clip on the back and then you just push the repair wire in and put it all back together.

The wiring loom on the rear of the fuse carrier was somewhat unforgiving so I screwed it all back together, the fuse doubler was a nice quick mod that did the job nicely. Granted, it isn't as neat as creating a new circuit but it did the job well in this instance.

I think I will go for the piggyback fuse as it's easily removed if needs be.

Thanks for the help

Here is how to use the piggyback solution (it is for motorcycle, but the idea and detail seems to be the same, right?)

Sorry for my stupidity. That detail provides contact for one wire. Should the 2nd wire of the charger be attached to the car body (zero)?

This is how I mounted the satnav. I used an inline fuse and a spade connector into an unused, switched live socket (easily found with a multimeter). The wire is fed through the dash and out under the top storage box. If you wanted to you could mount a surface mounted 12v socket in the storage box as theres loads of room under it.

Yes, any bare metal should do. There are a few bolts by the fusebox you can use.

I just used the nearest torx bolt that has a good connection with the chassis. I just stuck the right sized ring crimp on the end of my black wire and stuck it under the torx.

Its a little late, but as promised, here is how I route the cable to my phone, so its clear of the gearstick.
