Dash Cam & 12V Multi Adaptor Hidden Install (driver storage compartment)

Great guide Fubar. I already had my cam roughly hard wired in but decided to tidy it up and add the multi socket adapter at the same time as you did. Decided to get one with a USB port for easy charging of my iPhone.

Thinking of upgrading the camera now as mine is a cheapo Smartcam. Does the job but looking for a bit better picture quality. Must see if I can find a Blackvue DR380 within my budget.

Awesome that's exactly the wee adaptor with USB etc I would have bought if I didn't have the one I had lying around. I just have one of those wee flush 12v 2X USB adaptors to plug in it, so looks a little more pikey but then again I can put it in the normal 12V socket in centre console if say a passenger wants to charge phone and still have use of it. Your wee storage compartment has carpet in bottom, was that in car when you got it or did you put it in yourself? If the latter what stuff did you use?

This type of thing:

  • All Skoda should do is stop being so pikey with the single 12v socket in the Octy II FL hatch! Should be at least 15 strategically located throughout the car

  • I used to and still do in the mighty Mk1, use the ashtray lower centre console one for all that stuff and always have. The right compartment one is just too light and plastic for me to have thrown coi

  • The ones I got the one closest to fuse box is the new fuse, I cant see it making a difference as its just an in line fuse essentially for which way to put it in but my ones the fuses point towards

Yeah the carpet in the storage compartment has always been in the car. I doubt anyone would have bothered to retrofit something like that so must have come from the factory like this.

There was a bunch on here doing carpet inserts for the door cards didn't know if it had come off the back of that. The plastic under the carpet is very crapy and if you fire anything like keys in there would scratch it visibly and make a lot of noise. Might get a roll of that sort of stuff and see what happens :D

I followed the steps exactly, even using the same multiple sockets adapter. However, whenever I plug in anything, the fuse will blow!!!! This is getting really frustrating. I tried the exact same 15A in the photo, no go. I try another empty socket, same problem.

The same multiple socket adapter was transferred from my other ride and it works perfectly previously. Am I missing anything?

About 2 weeks ago my cam had stopped recording and it was because the fuse for the socket adapter had blown. Changed fuse and it blew again straight away when I plugged anything into it. So i ended up getting a new cigarette lighter adapter.

Have you got your positive and ground wires the correct way around? Normally the positive has a white or broken white line on the outer plastic sheath.

Nice job

Great post especially the fuse box bit. I have a DR400 and decided it would be better wired either to the cig lighter or a permanent live with a switch in line. The reason for this, is one of the main reasons for wanting a cam was for when my car is parked in shall we say vulnerable places ie supermarkets etc.I would need the camera working here to capture any hit+runs we get every day because of course i could leave the camera running with battery power during these short periods without the power magic adapter. I think i am right in saying it wont do this if its wired to a switched system were all power is off when ignition is off. Okay i realise if you forget you will have a flat battery but im told by Blackvue this would take a week so it should not be a problem.

Yeap, the +ve has wordings on it. I confirm by checking the cig lighter end, it's connected to the tip.

And when I connect up a light it works. When I connect up my In Car Camera, the fuse blows....... the camera uses a 2A fuse. Something must be causing it to draw more than 2A ?

Then subsequently the 5A fuse blow ! Something is very wrong somwhere

And does the camera work if you plug it into the standard cigarette lighter socket below the gear lever?

Just done this install this evening, fitted a 2 x 12V / 2 x USB socket combo, £2.95 from eBay.

Well pleased and it took all of ten minutes to do

Another happy customer down here at FUBAR's dodgy wiring emporium

My pikey cheap multi adaptor I had and used is still going strong, must have been a good un.

This might be stating the obvious, but DON'T just hard wire the cam power lead to the car with a switch as mentioned above, you must go through a socket extension as FUBAR has, otherwise your output voltage through the power lead to the camera will be too high and you will blow the camera up.  Ask me how I know...

I wanted to do this in my superb but the coin box is a different shape and size.

I also wanted to be able to switch the items on/off.

The solution was to mount above the coin box.

see Switchable Twin Accessory Sockets in the superb II forum.

Great original post and help, than you

Can't believe you hid this away in the Octy 2 section FUBAR, I've just come across it. :D

Another think I need to add to the Yeti...

Might be worth a shot in the Rapid too? What does it have in the way of socketage?

One 12v ciggy plug in the centre console and one USB under the radio.

I think I've got shot of it now though... :)

Replacing with a LEAF I'm getting tomorrow so will be repeating your guide for that.

Will be harder for me to spot a Leaf on the roads than it was for the yellow beast! I am tempted to get the new Octy VRS still but......... there is really nothing wrong with the current car :( .

Hi Fubar, thanks for the instructions they are invaluable.

Just one question about the blade fuse piggy back tap adaptor: As I understand it it's only the positive terminal that is 'tapped' and the negative is taken from the chassis. Does it matter which way the adaptor is plugged into the fuse box?

In other words: Is it the top of the fuse box 'socket' that's positive or the bottom?

Thanks.

It does not matter which way the adaptor is plugged in the fuse socket.

It does not matter which way the adaptor is plugged in the fuse socket.

It does if you want the tap to be protected by the fuse.

It does if you want the tap to be protected by the fuse.

I wasnt aware it made a difference.  Can you explain more why it does?
