struggling with fractions

Featured Replies

I have still only done 100 miles or less in my Fabia vRS. Much of my driving seems to have been in heavy traffic and with a cold engine so things may improve with practice. My issue is that I can happily trundle around pretending my car is a sensible 1.4 automatic or I can push it hard. I am finding it hard to judge the bits in between. If these are fractions, I can happily drive at two tenths or 7 tenths or above. It is tge bit in between I am struggling with. Before you mention women drivers, I have been driving 26 years and owned 100+ cars including several big Jags, BMW 530 etc. Is this due to the 'false' torque of a twincharged car or just a need to truly gauge the throttle. It could also be a massive adjustment from a 75bhp turbo diesel...

How are you driving it (in 'D' for instance)?

Are you accustomed to torque converter auto or dual-clutch semi-automatic cars?

EDIT: I tend to drive it as you say, come to think of it. Gently or... not so gently. It's a real Jekyll and Hyde kind of car.

I have never had a semi-auto but have had several autos in the past. It has mainly been driven in D so far but I have tried paddles/tiptronic shifting (it feels like a video game!). I guess at times it would be nice to drive moderately quickly without feeling very on/off with the throttle or feeling like a thug. The guy I passed coming on to the bypass last night certainly thought I was!

The Gearbox will adjust to your driving in a short while.

If you just start off with a cold car, and in 'D', by around 40-50 mph it will already be in 6th or 7th gear and below 2500 rpm.

It will only do 25 -35 mpg for around 5 miles untill its warmed up.

(weather dependent)

below 2400 rpm the car is just calm and economic. Supercharged. Floor the throttle if you want, it will drop 2 gears probably.

2400-3500 and you have Supercharger and Turbo probably, kick down in 'D' if you want.

Watch for Torque Steer or loss of traction, (weather Dependent).

3500-7000 revs, all the fun of the day on Turbo.

it will be over 100 mph in seconds.

'D' gives you 7 gears & 'S' is only 6 gears unless the Gearbox/ECU is Modified.

Then you have 'S', Stick manual shifts, or Paddle.

World is your Oyster,

have fun.

I was under the impression Sport only had 5 gears? Well i've never gotten above 5th anyway!

The vRS could do with a proper Owners Manual Supplement.

That DSG stuff in Some Manuals is for 6 speeders and not that good for a 7 speed DSG.

Personally i mostly drive in 'D' & use 'S' to decelerate without braking with the brakes.

Or in 'D' when spirited Driving,

knock Across with the Stick to Drop Gears,

but the Stick goes right back to 'D' and let the car do all up shifts.

thats where i get best acceleration, letting the DSG & Twincharger chose the gears.

I very seldom over take in 'S', it does not suit me.

If in 'D' that gets it moving fast enough, and you can do a double kick down,

and i can get the car slowed quick if needed, dropping gears in 'D, then across to manual,

or just back to 'S' and lift off the throttle..

(i do not use the paddles on a Twincharger DSG)

george

Thanks for the information George, because I had read it somewhere about the 5 gears but then again it also stated about launch control.. which only the 6 speed DSG carries?

I very rarely use "S" myself but for me it's great for when I want a rush from the acceleration! But also as you say good for engine braking too.

All in all though, I have had absolutely no faults what so ever with the car and all the hardware. Only my second car but I know I spent my money well :giggle:

I did notice this when I first got mine. It's very throttle sensitive but as George mentions the box does 'learn' your style in time.

Its throttle sensetive due to the 'map' of the throttle pedal gives nearlly 100% of throttle at 75%ish of throttle pedal movement. I hear a lot of vags are set up like this.

This can be and has been changed by a member cant remember who did it or who it was thou sorry.

Theres many 'how i drive my vrs' thread on here me, i drive 'm' all the time but thats manly because i hate the change down on hills when theres no need for it to do so

I found the remap made it much more drivable on a daily basis without having to use the loud pedal as much purely because the power band had been widened so much.

I have been flat out in S mode and only got to 5th gear!

It takes a short while to adjust to the dsg in the fabia, just leave it in D and drive it like a go kart, a go pedal and a stop pedal.

enjoy your new car

I think the best way to drive sedately but then achieve bursts of moderate but not violent acceleration is to leave it in D but then use the left paddle. If simply left in D it seems that sometimes a it needs a bigger depression of the accelerator than I instinctively want to give it to change down and go.

On the other hand if I change down with the paddle BEFORE accelerating the engine is ready to go and and willdo so smoothly. When the need for the extra speed has passed an easing off will soon see the car revert to D mode

I think that is the best way I can answer the original question.

I did manage to get into 7th in S - once - on the Autobahn.... :giggle:

You'll find the more you drive it, your right foot will "auto adjust" as well as the gearbox so you can make rapid, but not flat out, progress.

re 7th in 'S',

I think they will almost all 'indicate' 7th in 'S', ie 'S7' if you are in 'D 7', put cruise control on, then shift to 'S',

but actually its still in 'D7' as seen by the revs..

There are some boxes that under acceleration in 'S' will shift to 'S7' at around 125 - 127 mph.

george

You can take it to 100mph/160 kpm/h, in D7 with Super & Turbo still activating just below 3,500 rpm,

do a Double kick down,

shift to 'S' and the box gets fooled a little and often then changes up to 'S7' at around 125 mph

No cruise - and I was over 127mph...

I like to "beat" the computer when I approach a hill by dropping the car a gear or two with the paddles. I "win" if it reverts back to "D" in the same gear.

In D I find the car very Jekyll and Hyde. If you want to drive at 75% then you really need to use manual gears. I actually prefer using the stick (up and down to change gear) to using the paddles.

I don't think I have REALLY pushed my car hard yet one of my friends is not talking to me at the moment because of my driving. Ooops

Time for a new friend? :bandit:

Keep away from me then. Whats area's do you drive in ?? I think I'll give it a week or two for you too get used to your car :-)

My friend drives a Micra. Enough said?

I love my vRS. I can be a civilised driver one minute but can instantly stomp on the gas for awesome power to surprise those pesky BMW owners :p

I stay in D 99% of the time. The car is used for my daily commute so I need to be fairly aware of fuel usage. I shove it in to S on the odd occasion when conditions require, I.e when up against something more closely matched to the vRS.

With comnents like that I'll come find you. Live in Penarth, work in centre of Cardiff

I don't understand when people are saying they can only get S5 or S6 while in sports mode. I've managed to get into S7 and I haven't been booting it. Usually drop into S mode while on dual carrigeways/motorways just incase I need to under i mean overtake ;). And you can cruise os S7 too.
