Columbus CD changer problems

Featured Replies

Hi there guys, having some problems with my cd changer in the boot. It plays the cd's but the music sounds distorted. The speakers are fine as the music on the HDD and radio play well. Just wondering if i need to put in a CD cleaner in there, or is it something different?? I have no idea what make/model the changer is sorry.

Cheers

No all the ICE came with the car.

Have you had the car long?

Has this just started happening?

Have you been using the CD changer much?

if the car was secondhand, then its possible the previous owner retrofitted the Columbus and never used the CD changer afterwards, in which case the link posted by KBPhoto is very relevant. Having retrofitted a columbus to an octavia MK2 and experiencing the very symptoms you describe, switching the wires round fixes the issue.

IIRC the columbus is not normally supplied with a changer, since it has an internal 30GB Hard drive where you can copy music and also an SD card slot to play music from.

if not the above then, If the sound you are hearing is like a clicking sound during playing then the lens is dirty or CD is damaged.

Early Columbus did get specced with cd changer I believe, I have both and the Columbus was factory fitted so unless the cd changer was retrofitted (surely not) then I guess its possible. But def check the wiring.

Ok now that we have agreed on the wiring, how on earth do i take out the double din unit lol ????

Open the ashtray by the gear stick, grab the bottom of the fascia / trim and pull (gently but firmly) into the car.

Remove fascia (use a plastic ruler to pry out the top edge if it gets stuck).

Undo 4 torx (T20?) screws and slid out head unit.

Unplug aerial (white), GPS (blue) & quadlock (black) connectors.

Be careful when replacing to ensure the pins in the aerial and GPS plugs on the unit are central before pushing the socket back on otherwise they bend & break (as I found out).

Cheers for the heads up guys. Managed to get the unit out today and had a look at the wiring, jus one more Q, hopefully. How do you get the pins out from the connector, do i just pull and push into the other?

Cheers

Do i need one of those blue connecters?

Cheers

Maj

Its the blue connector on the bottom left that you need to make the change in. Pull it out and there should be a tab on the side which you can gently prise with a flat bladed jewellers screwdriver. Then the cover of the connector comes away revealing the pins. There is a small tab on each pin holding them in so press this down with the screwdriver and gently pull out. When reinserting make sure the tab re-engages with an audible click.

Hope that helps

Sorry for being soo dumb lol. But what colour pins do i swap over??? the diagram says a black pin and then another pin which is not labelled lol

Cant recall colours but its pins 2 and 3. The pins should be labelled on the connector, should correspond to top left but one and top left but two. Its green and black according to the info in kbs post.

Adam

Mikes pictures indicate the two earth pins that are relevant for the swap in the top right connector. The pictures are upside down when compared to your picture of the rear of your columbus though.

I just meant relatively as they may actually be the right way around! The fuse in the picture is upside down.....

Mike's pictures just need rotating 180 degrees to match the back of the HU and the original picture.

If you also have aux in its swap pins 2 and 3 over, if you dont, as mike says simply move pin 2 to 3

Just for future reference push the tab down inside the connector with a small screwdriver and while doing that pull it out gently, should budge easily. You then push the pin back in until the tab clicks back with an audible sound.

Hi maj *wave*

Hi!

Thank you guys by this topic! I bought some months ago one of this "boxes" who emulates a cd-changer (based on MP3 and Bluetooth). The sound was really poor...I sent several mails with the seller, even we changed the box for a new one, changed cables...and sound was still extremely poor. I've switched from pin "2" to "3" and now it sounds amazing! :-)

Really, thank you very much! I knew that something was not correct, but It should have been impossible without this forum.
