The 1.8 Tsi does it again...

Some sadly lacking praise for the humble plain Jane,  Octavia 1.8 Tsi petrol

Annual Devon Holiday round trip of 600 miles and 300 miles of day runs

Total journey to and from 42 mpg fully loaded 3 adults, a full boot and half the back seat full

300 mile of day trips 44mpg

Had to smile on the only clear stretch of the M5

She pulled away from yet another  Audi "Daylight running lights" tailgater

Of course he eventually caught up and went past  doing well over 100mph, but the point had been made

Will miss her next year but I can hear the 330D  calling me

They do go rather well don't they - and look so innocent !!!

I'm going 1.8TSI next time :)

I omitted the fact I had a  blue fin remap which does not appear to  affect the MPG at all

Gives me an extra 50 gee gees

Well worth the £350 price

The 30-50mph in third  is utterly devastating, I doubt any Skoda can match it!

After the remap, did you have to do anything else to it or was that literaly it? Just asking now my warranty has run out and I've always tinkered with past cars. ;)

Plug and play and just use Shell V power...

My daily commute of 20 miles sees 46 mpg if I take it easy

For me its the overtaking ability and sheer grunt on the motorway, she just storms away

You get 7 day refund on the Blue fin too!

she just storms away

 Love that comment!

Is that a calculated or computer displayed mpg figure ? If its the computer the remap is likely to make it more optimistic than std.

Shame.

All the good old decent engines being discontinued :(

That's quite exceptional. Mine sees 40ish at best on a steady 70 motorway cruise and 35ish on day to day (this doesn't matter whether it's in town or country roads). Seemed to get worse by a couple of mpg when I changed the tyres from the sawtoothing Bridgestones to Goodyear F1 Eagles a year back. What tyres are you runing if you don't mind my asking?

I just put £26 quids worth of V power in a week   (4 Gallons) and get 180 miles out of it

I was  still getting 43mpg on normal stuff...

I don`t hammer it at all and occasionally ie a  damp day have seen 49 mpg from the computer on the same run.

winter is totally different as we all know but still averaging 40 ish over past 20,000 miles

Great car and unless you have driven one you will not understand how good they are

On the contrary!.......I think the 1.8 TSI is the petrol engine of choice for the Octavia.......that's only petrol engined Octavia I'd ever consider.

I agree -nothing I can trade in for at present! I've also seen 49 m.p.g. - just - on the M25 once.

No trouble getting into the early to mid forties on a reasonably uninterrupted run.

Wish they'd put the 1.8 TSi engine into a Rapid - might consider a change if they did.

Apart from a remapped 2 litre tsi? There's a few of those about.

Just done a 65 mile journey east to west tonight and averaged 45 mpg in one of these. The west to east run usually does better for mpg and I've seen 50 mpg on a few occasions.

Not sure whether that's to do with the prevailing wind or the altitude difference - possibly a combination.

It is better in summer as long as I don't use the air con. But rarely drops below 40 mpg whatever I do.

I'm delighted with the 1.8tsi engine and it's good to know there's some grunt there even if I don't use it often.

Might be which way is more downhill. When I have the mpg readout on my dash visible,  it starts to go up steadily as soon as the car is going downhill, even slightly, and drops again going uphill - makes sense I suppose!.

Fair dos,  the VRS looks the part....

But no one expects a spanking from a "bog standard looking" Octavia...

Nothing about 1.8tsi - only that I have set my heart on a BMW 330d too as i get rid of my 1.8tsi next march probably. Some great lease deals out there and I saw one on the mega 335d for just over £400 as well!!

PS A BMW so don't forget the winter tyres!!

PPS (PC1212) did you know that BMW havea F30post forum - almost as lively as Bsiskoda but not quite so argumentative? Sorry!

Seriously a huge amount of data, opinions etc on the recent BMW F30 3 series to refer to.

Isn't the 1.8tsi a chain driven engine? Isn't the chain likely to fail like on the 2.0tsi?

Yes

Do you guys have the 160 or the 152 version?

Would love to see that sort of MPG on my 1.8TSI

Mine is officially 160 [but many reckon that is a slight underestimate!]

Probably true.....

My old ('07) manual vRS was supposed to produce 197 bhp, but according to AMD it produced 206.5 bhp @ 5852 rpm before thier stage one remap.

After they worked their magic it pumped out 257.4 bhp @ 5887 rpm, Go figure!

Similar tale re. torque, Skoda quote 200 ft/lbs, from 1500 - 5100 rpm, a nice flat torque curve, which was acheived fron the graph supplied by AMD, but it peaked at 209.6 ft/lbs @ 3557 rpm before & 284.3ft/lbs @ 3175 rpm after the remap.

The new torque curve had two peaks, max.at 3175 & app. 280 ft/lbs at app. 4700, but always much more torque than before.

The 1st peak was quite noticeable, occaisional wheelspin in 3rd, usually when exiting a roundabout entusiastically even on a dry road......

I'd imagine that it would keep up with your 1.8 but at a cost in fuel consumption. I was happy with the overall 35/36 mpg that it achieved but I'm not normally a "quick" driver, I just like the extra oomph when I need it.

My Superb is curently averageing 36+ but SWMBO's FL Octy is hovering around the 34+ mark, probably 'cos it's driven (by both of us) "differently"!

Same power train in both cars, & less weight in the Octy, but much less "red mist" in the Superb, probably due to the car's character?

Still, enjoy your 1.8, it must indeed be a "Q-car" & much more fun to drive than a more obvious quick car .

I'd say the same re. my Superb, it's much quicker than the average punter expects it to be, especially the hot-hatch brigade, & very pleasant place to be whilst cruising through Europe's motorways.

Hope you enjoyed the waffle, DC.

That is a good point, and one that appeals to me too!
