These new "DualCore" CPU's -- can you run two copies of folding at the same time and if so is it quicker - or should you just run the one and use the greater CPU power that way ????

:bump: According to the "top 1000" teams we had the biggest single WU production score total in the team's history - 3380 points - now up to 282 in the rankings! http://statsman.info/folding2stats

I think both can run it, which is obviously good. I just can't afford the dual athlon 64 chips, so going to go for one solid fast processor. :)

I run two on my HT enabled intel box.

Worse case I drop one when temp alarms go off...who knows if it's "quicker", might even be slower by time the piplines are filled up too many years have passed between study and typing this note...

Yeah looking at the cost of them I'm not sure the benefit would be great enough - better to get a faster cooking version for a bargain price me thinks!

Well done guys - our best folding day ever yesterday... but we need to keep the pressure up....

So come on everyone else....

Got to widen the gap whilst i have chance on devon :P :rofl:

:D

And a very much not in the spirit of things :finger: for you. :P

I guess its position legs eleven for me for a while then.

Sadly I tried to resume folding but it kills my machine if I try and use SolidWorks at the same time.

Good to see you all keeping the Briskoda team afloat though.

Folding also kills my machine (well it stops it working right) when I try to play some games, especially my old skool fave, worms 2. "oh nooo, BANG!"

Doesn't seem to affect the microsoft applications. Wonder if there's some element of the folding console which uses some file / system on windows which causes a conflict when some other application tries to use it too? Always found it works better on a standalone machine with no other items in the taskbar, etc. ;)

Its what I'm gonna do' date=' although best not to scrimp on the PSU for stability's sake. :)

1 gig of memory and a mega CPU is the prominent elements of my imminent system. Gonna be a small HDD, cheapo sound & graphics, etc. NOo floppy, basic cd-rom. ;)[/quote']

Will you build that yourself, or try and buy it ready made? (Silly question when you think about your exploits with cars I suppose!)

If you go for the latter option, I'd be interested to know how much you get that for.

Have fun!

Knowing Dave, it will be a self build, most self's work out more than off the shelf, but use better comps and thus paper spec for paper spec work better. my home built 2.4 is quicker than my shelf wonky build works 2.8...

I suspect it's because Folding is CPU-intensive but most desktop applications are not. Exceptions being things like Photoshop, video-editing stuff. Games tend to be highly intensive, especially with graphics and sound....

And it will work better on an empty system as it uses idle processor time - if the CPU ain't doing anything, then Folding can run uninterrupted ;)

Or just set priority to realtime :D

Or just set priority to realtime :D

Apparently that has no effect as the priority is set programmatically in the software :(

Chris

I certainly prefer to self build - purely because I then know exactly what has gone in and how it's been handled -- it's definately not cheaper - but at least you can choose how much to spend and the brands of the stuff you use etc.

Just trying to tie down the spec for my next one.

Had some good news in work today tho - I've been asking for a new PC - as my old Win'98 unit was getting a bit clonky!! -- so today ordered a P42.8 with 512mb - should cope with folding very nicely

So you're saying it will slightly better on a screen with no background piccie or desktop icons, than one with a high res piccie of a Fabia and about 5 columns of icons? :D

Oh, anyone noticed seatcupra.net don't have a folding team. Who's going to have the honour of approaching them to see if they want to help? :D:rofl: I reckon they'd start their own team and whup us eventually.

Thought maybe their big member base could help us progress still further.

Not a happy bunny :(

Left my PC on all night last night in an effort to increase my score......................

when II was using my PC last night - I was browsing the web and had iTunes blasting away - FAH was taking around 35mins/unit.

Before I went to bed I shut down as many services that I could and switched the screensaver off so that as much CPU cycles would be free - switched the monitor off to save it.

Get up this morning to find folding has generated 1 whole unit !!!!!!!!

now shows 397mins/unit WTF!!

EDIT: Wonder if it's to do with any of the folding config settings -- which settings do you guys use ??

I'm using the graphical version - although I never have the screen open just running in the task bar.

Any ideas ??

Just signed up, running it on two machines.

Gaming Rig

AMD 4000+ Venice (1mb L2 Cache, Water cooled, clocked @ 2.8ghz)

2 x XFX 7800GT SLI

2GB Corsair

Ghost Server (In the office)

Dual AMD 64 3500+ Winchesters

4GB RAM

8MB ATI Xpert @ work :-)

I am thinking of installing it in the classrooms over the xmas break and letting it run, got to clear it with my colleagues first, if I can it will be running across 22 x AMD64 3500 + (Winchester) with 2GB RAM.

Hopefully I can help push the stats up.

TBH, I doubt that would make a significant difference as the graphics card's CPU will be handling redrawing the screen :D

Fluff, welcome to the team.

Now that is the Briskoda spirit we've been talking about. Good on ya!

Let us know about the 22 Athlons.

All the Best
