what about PCI, (pci :D) and PCI-E ??

I am pretty certain an ordinary pci graphics card would work fine for what you want it for ...........can't find my old ones  I think they went to the great computer in the sky

:bump: According to the "top 1000" teams we had the biggest single WU production score total in the team's history - 3380 points - now up to 282 in the rankings! http://statsman.info/folding2stats

Just gave the kiss of life to an old 700 AMD athlon PC I had in pieces .....now its folding  so I'll see what it can do, always was quick for the given speed

Carefull PCI-X and PCI-E (xpress) are two totally different beasts !

Sorry meant pci-e but was saying express in my head and tapped x...brain is a bit broken at the moment.

Now back to two CPU's, with this one i've finally managed to boot up, got my eye on another too in this same office i'm sat in right now ;)

All cos of a power shutdown at our campus over xmas *sighs

Just got a five port 10/100 switch too, to be able to setup a few extra base uits discreetly of course lol

Anyone seen any guides on setting it up as a service only, got a few machines in mind, but dont want to run the Client, cos i just know i'll get asked what the system tray icon is....be grateful for any info on this

Lee

i just ordered 2 more pcs and a xeon box for work..... so im coming after you neo.....

I can't really describe it in a post, but happy to talk you through it on MSN later tonight?

You can start by downloading the console client from folding.stanford.edu ;)

xeons are crap for folding.. would be better off with a P4... or even better a AMD64 :D

ps... ive just ordered 8 dual 3.6gig xeon 1u rackmount servers so dont you even try to push me :P

A little while ago someone put up a link to a page showing how long the work unit should take and how many points it was worth.............I've looked and I've searched but I can't find ................anyone know the link?

Think this is the one you're after:

Think i've just successfully got another system up and folding(another p4 2.8Gig), this time running the console version as a service ;)

Pretty straight forward really - least this way it will be more discreet

Will have to keep an eye on the logs to make sure i've set up everything as it should be

 or :finger: Which smiley do I use? ;)

The service does work well I must admit. All I do now is click on the notepad "unitinfo" to see how its going. I'm sure it must be marginally more efficient running that way as there's no graphical / molecular ****** going on, like with the actual program. :D (probably talking about mere tenths of a percent quicker though....? :))

Well ya see it had to be done this way as its not a machine of mine @work ;) They wouldnt mind, just that this way, they wont see the icon in the system tray

I prseume the comp system just has to be switched on and not logged in then? Otherwise this whole thing has been a waste of my time lol

Pretty sure (almost 99.9% certain, which is rare for me :D) it MUST be logged in to work - and if anyone else ever logs in, set it up as a service on their profile as well. :)

I know my old laptop used to stop folding when I closed the lid (which just logged it out) Just leave it logged in and switch the monitor off. ;)

Thing is, i know for a fact the person whos machine it is always logs the damn thing off, maybe i'll have to log back in, as luckily they leave at 2:30pm every day :) -i know i'll forget to log it back out in the morning though LOL

I just thought i rem that if you ran it this way it got around the whole log in thing, must have misheard :)

I might be wrong. ;) I know that we're told here to leave our PCs turned on but logged off so that virus updates, etc can still go on, so maybe some processes can be made to continue whilst being logged off?

This is the cue for someone who can speak out of other orifices other than their a55, to pipe up. :D

indeed they can ... I run an ssh server on my destop box that is active when no one is logged in. Remote Destop which is part of XP is an invaluable to for sysadmins.

From the forums on the FAH site :

To set it as a service: run it once with the -configonly flag and say yes to service (in the advanced settings), restart your computer and every should be running

-------

As a double check (In XP) I'd go to Start - > Control-Panel -> Administrative tools -> Services (or start -> run ... services.msc)

Look for the FAH service and ensure that its startup type is Automatic.

 Exactly the process I was told to go through as well, except I was told to right click "My Computer", and select "manage" which takes you through to the services (and others) window - This was on XP home though, so might be a different OS.

I had to make sure the DOS box was closed, and then start the service like above. :)

Sounds like i should be ok then (setup as a service when asked in console)- now for the other 14 or so P4 2.8Ghz systems to sort out in the same office (another early morning i guess)

Cheers for that,

Lee

This might be useful :

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsExec.html

I've not tried it but it puports to be able to execute console progs on remote machines

and in fact

http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/PsService.html

which allows the controlling of services on remote machines.

These should allow you to install the FAH service on any machine in your network without interfering with the regular user.

:)

Oh the trouble one could cause with these :D

Nope just another way of doing it which I'd fogotten at the time I was writing the message

I've not actually set it up as a service (yet) ... From what you've said the setup process doesn't actually start the service just installs it so you need to go to the services app and start it manually ... good to know

Yep, it does carry on folding if not logged in, proof is, the machine i set running on it late on yesterday, and that was at 17% this morning, is now at 47% complete, and has not been logged in for most of today(as far as am aware).

Just thought that may be of interest to some of us ;)

Got the AMD64 running yet Dev mate?

Running, but no O.S yet (something should be in the post to cure that - might receive it tonight ;))
