How about the 2.0 FSI Engine?

Featured Replies

Anyone know anything about the 2.0 FSI?

Found a Skoda Octavia with the above engine, 2005. Looks good, nice price. Bit too nice.

Seller produced paper work to show it's had two new drive shafts and a coil pack.

Bit surprising and concerning. Why has it needed drive shafts? How reliable is this one? Worth avoiding?

Has anyone got any experience of the FSI engine in terms of MPG around town? I understand I have a reasonable expectation to actually get around 27mpg around town. But I do hear it is a bit lacklustre and rough? Is that right?

We never had 2 drive shafts on ours!

It's not rear wheel drive right? there'll be an inner and and outer shaft won't there on either sides of the engine. Unless the guy is talking about CV Joints

The octavia (same as any fwd car) has 2 driveshafts,on on each side coming from the gearbox to each hub. (they have cv joints on each end).

Any explanation as to why both drive shafts would need to be done on an 05 with 70k miles?

I can understand the front brake disks, even though my 2001 86k miler is on originals. A bit iffy.

I understands too, urban mpg is OK, but motorway mpg is about 40 on the 2.0 FSI?

40mpg if you drive slooow maybe. Lord know why one drive shaft failed let alone both. Sounds like a twoca to me. Avoid.

If you have any doubts - and it seems clear that you do - then walk away.

Hrm. This is starting to annoy me now. Perhaps I expect too much for £3k. But I've seen a couple of Audi A4s with obviously a rear end repair and replacement bumpers front and rear as they are both different shades. There was a VW Passat B5.5 that looked exactly the same with rust coming through on the wheel arch.

Then there was this that otherwise looked OK, but then the guy reeled off the things it's had, including coil packs, drive shafts (like that's a selling point!) and new front brake disks. The fact those two were mentioned together makes me wonder about any front end damage or engine issue. Then on the forums you get people saying their FSI keeps going wrong every 50 miles! Argh.

There was a £6k civic with a paint bubble in the bonnet though at one point, a £4k Avensis with a spongy clutch idling at 2000rpm at cold.

I think as someone said elsewhere, they don't make them like they used to, and the cost of second hand cars are a lot more than they used to be.

Getting really annoyed now.

I had a 2005 one from new - it was okay but nowhere near as good as my present 1.8 TSi.

My FSi needed a new a/c compressor and a new cat' converter just before warranty expired (luckily!)

Thanks ednmra - any other major problems or generally reliable? Good step up from a Nissan Primera? I only got 115bhp, it shouldn't have that much torque, but it pulls well. Got the prospect of a 2.0 FSI but Im very cagey about the fact Drive SHafts have been changed and the coil pack problems. Would prefer a car without timing belt too. But, ahh well, can't have everything. Plus I'll need to add £350 for CanBus, Bolero and MDI Interface :-)

Im sure from a forum search I've come up with people having a multitude of problems. At 27mpg (rated) I could be adding an extra £10 to my fuel bill every month. Was hoping not to spend more on fuel.

Shame they didn't do a 1.8 non turbo version.

The 1.8TSI is chain driven and slightly better mpg.

But it seems to be rated slightly less, and costs slightly more, and slightly more worrying is the Turbo inclusion which sends me a judder with potential problems.

Love the sound of it though, but can't help but feeling, that if the 1.8T is capable of more, why isn't it rated higher? I fact it seems all FSI/TFSI engines are capable of higher MPG urban than actually rated. So are they rated particularly low?

2 driveshafts may have just been the boots on the cv going. Not sure on Skoda but I changed driveshafts on an old pug I had as the whole driveshaft was only about £10 more expensive than the boot kit and so much easier to fit. Coil packs go on all cars. A mate just had one go on his pampered 911.

As a side note its not unusual for vag cars to have bumpers a different shade to the rest if the car. A lot of them come out of the factory like that... (I had issues with this before)

Varies a lot with use. On a comfortable long run cruising maybe in the 60s, mine gets well above 40 mpg, have seen 48 once. At 70s the mpg is high 30s.

No turbo problems so far after 5.5 years! But have only done about 36K.  Re: Primeras, my last one was the GT, lovely motor but that was quite some years ago.

My wife's 55 plate Merc A150 needs two new drive shafts due to eating through CV boots and then developing the customary clicking on full lock. CV joints aren't separate and are part of the drive shaft therefore 2 new drive shafts will be required very soon (About £120 each I believe). Car is only on 50k miles.
