Columbus steering wheel volume control - what have I done?

Featured Replies

I got in my car last night and without putting the key in the ignition, I switched on the radio and immediately turned the volume off with the knob on the unit (I didn't want to hear any football news - I was on the way home to watch it on Tivo :) ) Now though, the steering wheel volume wheel doesn't work. I can only turn up/down with the dial on the unit itself. Is it broken or have I unwittingly changed something?

Another question - is it possible to completely turn off/disable voice control completely? It may as well not be there for the good it is. It tells me I have no numbers in my telephone book, and says to add one I have to select the name from the phonebook and select the option to 'add voice tag' (or similar) but when I select the name that option isn't there (much like loads of other options which are unavailable to me - why can't they all just work the same, and properly, straight from the factory instead of forever having to update firmware and mess with VCD to get things which you should have in the first place, like 7 digit postcode and all the set up menus?  /rant over)

are you talking about it not working all the time or only when the ignition's off?

If it's the second, mine doesn't work either without the ignition switched on

Second that.

Mine doesn't work if the ignition is off.

Steering wheel controls won't work without the ignition on.

2nd that.

Regarding Voice Control, I'm sorry you're finding it annoying.

There are many options for it, long and short prompts etc. so it's worth reading the Columbus manual and persevering - I call her Mildred and find it very useful but sometimes she chooses not to understand what I want and so I just say 'Cancel' and she shuts up.

Sorry for the late reply, I was working till late.

No, I meant not working at all now, even with the ignition on.

The Columbus problem is largely resolved now. My problem with voice tags was that the option to add a voice tag is not in the head unit screen but in the MFD, but I couldn't get my phonebook to load. After a little further research I installed the My Bluetooth Phonebook app. Straight away I was able to copy my phonebook over (it had been failing every time at 135 entries and cutting the bluetooth connection). It also stopped the issue I was having where every time I got in the car, the phone would connect but then after about 30 seconds it would disconnect then reconnect again. Now it comes on and stays on. Best £1.19 I've spent in a while.

Any thoughts on this anyone?

Nobody at all?

You'll need to get the fault codes read, the controls work via Canbus signalling direct to the columbus, so something has gone funny with the databus. If you have the radio code, or the headunit is original you could try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery after 20 mins to see if a reboot of the whole car fixes it.

Sorry mannyo, I've been really busy.

I thinks it's original - so I won't need the code it I disconnect for a while?  Also, I did the battery drain FW fix last week (dunno if it's fixed yet, it hasn't been long since I charged battery), although I can't remember if the wheel has worked since then. Could that have affected it?

does your horn work? I had a fault on my Octy Vrs that only happened when it was cold. I noticed that I could change gear using the paddles, then I noticed the steering wheel buttons didn't work along with the horn. It turned out to be a steering control module (or something like that).

Yes, the horn is working fine.

Get the car hooked up to VCDS, and see what faults it's throwing. If possible, clear all DTC's and check again.

Yeah, that's a problem as there's nobody anywhere near me with VCDS and I object to paying £60 an hour for main dealer to guess at the fault might be.

But thanks anyway.

Its not clear from your profile where you are based, but if its South Wales or the West Country, I'd be happy to scan it for you.

Thanks for the offer adam (?). I'm in Manchester and the couple near me in the database seem to have left us :)

Yes it is Adam! I'm sure there are active members up that way so hopefully one will offer. Definitely needs a scan though.

Hi deek72,

Got exactly the same issue after loading the battery drain fix.

All steering wheel buttons work accept for the volume wheel.

Scanned it with VCDS but no errors.

Did you find a solution for this?

Thanks.

try reversing what you did.

ignition on and immediately turn the volume up with the thumb roller.

Your profile says you have a Yeti, Why were you loading the battery drain fix, because it shouldn't be relevant to a Yeti.

Yes, I didn't expect this to happen (it's a 2010 model) but after the 4120 upgrade got all kind of voltage issues (airbag, abs failure etc.) and had to jump start it.

Assumed this relates to the installed gateway and didn't encounter the battery drain after I installed the gw fix...

Everything works correctly including dutch voice control (which is not supported on fw 2684), except for the the audio volume wheel. When I push the volume wheel the voice control starts, so even that functions.

Could try to reload the 4120 but affraid I will encounter the battery drain again...

4120 is somewhat problematic in my experience. If I were you I'd look for either the original SW version which came loaded on the machine, or a certain 5238 modified by Josi.

Be aware, fixing something by trying to fix it again and again is often not a good idea. It could be you have a flaky unit and it's showing signs of dying. If you can get it back to a working state I'd stick where you are.

And I wouldn't throw the battery drain fix at it, or the Skoda fix either (if you come across them), because you're trying to fix a problem they're not capable of fixing, by the sound of things.
