First Skoda and could use help with sat nav.

Featured Replies

Hello

Just about to purchase my first ever Skoda (octavia estate CR SE 63 plate) and want to know if it's possible to fit sat nav if it's not been fitted in the factory?

I have assumed as the computer is there as well as the touch screen it will just be a software update, however that sounds too good to be true so it probably is.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

Probably would cost a bomb for a factory fitted sat-nav, and would be better and cheaper all round, for an after-market stand-alone TomTom sat-nav..

Agreed.

It could be fitted but you need a GPS receiver which won't be there and the maxi dot won't recognise or display any SatNav functions without a software update.

TBH unless you have to have a built in SatNav then go get a decent TomTom for 1/8 of the price or use a good smartphone and bluetooth the route destructions to the headunit (if you have bluetooth).

Amundsen = ok (just), Columbus = looks good but is seriously overpriced.

Thanks for your comments,

I thought it would cost a lot, my aim is to get the garage to fit it as part of the deal as it won't cost them as much.

I really wanted to know if it could be done as dealers are good at making things that may reduce their make up appear impossible.

Worst case is I do as Sheldon Cooper Says and buy a Tom Tom or such like.

On the older Mk2 Octavia etc it was a simple replace the head unit and update the car through the settings and that was it, simple job to do, now, though you have to buy the replacement head unit which will be an arm and a leg as it will be through Skoda themselves, then because of the new way the cars computer works it has to be coded from the factory or main computer or something, so the car has to be linked up to them via the dealer and various settings changed etc, so it all starts to add up to make it a very expensive upgrade, I would be very surprised if the dealer would do you a deal on something which will be very expensive to do.

I much prefer in built sat nav as I hate trailing wires etc, but, in this case the reality is that you don't really have a great deal of choice other than an aftermarket unit or get one for your smartphone if you have one.

Skoda dealers used to do a Kenwood (I think) unit as a dealer fit.  Not sure if it still applies to the O3 though.

I have the Amundsen built in sat nav but prefer my old Tom Tom which I sit on a dash mat (never moves, no windscreen sucker marks either !)) , and fully charging it before leaving on any journey means 2 hours navigation without any trailing wires . Anything longer of course would require incar charging, but I still find the Tom Tom more user friendly.

I have the Amundsen in my Elegance and have to say the sat nav on my phone (navmii) is better than the Amundsen.

The lack of speed camera locations compared to my TomTom is an issue - but my Amundsen gets me to where I am going, with spoken directions, lane guidance, re-routes, with TPS indicates roadworks etc, no trailing wires, keeps going without the need to charge. If it does what it is supposed to why carry a separate unit about????

Do you have to pay for roaming on your phone or does the cars GPS work that for you ?

Both mine and wife's phone are on the same bill @ about £16 a month sim-free but cheap as chips, not sure I'd justify better Sat Nav for another £20 a month, suppose its ok if you've already got it though.

My next Skoda will come without sat nav and instead I will likely buy a Garmin Nuvi 5" with full europe maps, lifetime updates, traffic alerts and bluetooth. At £140 a much cheaper alternative.

Don't keep your handheld Sat Nav in the glove box, the coler box funtionality kills the screen over time and makes the software go all wobbly.  The voice still works on mine but, it keeps reverting back to the new Navigational Address screen.
