Retro fit footwell lights Octy III

Recommended Posts

Hi, i have one of the last my2015 produced in 21 april 2015,with last MQB platform.

Can I add 4 footwell lights to my car?

Instructions, materials and kit are the same?

Thank you!

Man! Thanks, this is very helpful!

Hi Milanj,

No problem. :)

What are the part numbers of your door controllers?

I have 5Q4 959 592 B & 593 B.

I can now confirm that my door warning lights are connected to the 32-pin connector, PIN5 (GND) & PIN16 (+) in my Elegence.

...and I have succesfully activated PIN3 with VCDS so retrofitting door card lighting seems possible (my next project). :)

Puddle lights in ext. mirrors must use a different connector (not the 32-pin) as they still worked with the disconnected 32-pin connector.

Are you asking about controller "Address 52: Door Elect, Pass. SW: 5Q4 959 392 E HW: 5Q4 959 392 B"? Waiting for parts to fly in before I dig into connecting things.. But thanks again for info regarding warning lights! I take it you have no option to check where the fires from puddle lights physically connect?

Yep 42 and 52 are the door controllers, you have 5Q4 959 392 B & 393 B, cheaper ones with less function I'm afraid. :(

According to the manual from USP motorsports the mirror is connected to the connector marked with the red arrow.

You miss a lot of pins. :(

Good news is the 32-pin connector is almost the same so there's hope for you for the door warning lamps :)

In general, if I can get door warning lights, that's good, puddle lights would be a long shot anyway. But to be sure, I'd need wiring diagrams for my controller. Since you are more resourceful on this VAG stuff - any idea how or where could I get them?

Ok, I declare a win-lose-win situation.

Check this out (attachment), got it from a guy on VWWatercooled forums.

Win - warning lights YES

This diagram confirms your info regarding wiring pins for door warning lights (32 pin connector, pin 16) on all 4 "levels" of door controller.

Lose - puddle lights NO

If I cross check your picture of 393 controller with this diagram I have "FA min" of "BF min" variant, so no puddle lights which I believe are pin 1 on higher variants.

Win - inner door handle lightning YES

Positive news is I see all 4 variants have pin for inner door handle lightning, which is also something I planned for retroffit (32 pin connector, pin 3)

Hope this diagram helps others to.

Regarding puddle lights. Thinking.. It's still an option if I could identify "+" for inner lighting, the one that activates upon unlocking of car and deactivates after boarding (when all doors close).

Thanks for sharing the diagram.

Door panel lighting project started here, first tests:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0Rdf0EtDf4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgZAVzbjKY0

I am using 4500K silicone coated 5630 led stips (small cuts with 3 leds).

They are too bright at the moment. :) I will have to add some resistors.

Brightness can be adjusted in paralell with instument lighting.

U used pin 3 on 32pin connector? Did you had to enable via VCDS?

Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

Yes and yes.

Byte 1, bit 3 on controllers 42 & 52.

Did you get any CANBUS errors on LEDs? Probably not as this lighting I believe is originally meant to be LED...

Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

You can use only LEDs.

Door controller can take only small current on PIN3.

0,21 A was too much in my case (60 cm 5630 LED strip for testing). Controller switched off the output.

I had to clear the fault codes with VCDS...

Which connectors (terminals) did you use for door warning lights? I got this ones of ebay, used them for BCM on footwell retrofit, but figured out they are not the same on door controllers when I wanted to retrofit door warning lights.

I think the terminal/repair wire part no. is 000979009 or 000979009E.

It seems that retrofitters are using this:

By the way I used terminals from an old PC speaker's connector. They fit with some small modification. :)

It's easy. Open controller 42 -> [Coding 07] -> [Long Coding Helper] -> Byte 1 -> enable Bit 2 -> exit Long Coding Helper -> [Do It!]

Do the same on controller 52 and you are finished.

The manual from USP motorsports (in post #99) will help you if you still unsure about the coding steps :) Just make sure you tick the above mentioned bit and don't touch others.

This is an edited pic for you from the manual. :)

If you want to make your own wires here are some alternatives for the terminal.

Ok, I ordered this ones: http://si.farnell.com/te-connectivity-amp/963715-1/contact-socket-20-awg-crimp/dp/1330225

Let's see if it fits :)

Oh, footwell retrofit was completed over weekend and yesterday proper VAG coding was done!

I guess you're happy with it. :)

Yeah, just that maybe LEDs are a bit to strong even at 10% setting.. I'll try adding a 500 ohm resistor, to see how much I'll dim it down.

You can lower the brightness (voltage) with VCDS, it's easier. :)

It probably depends on the LED. Currently they are set to 90%, but my feeling tells me that in milanj case they should be set to close to 50%, because they are really strong...
