New Golf R

Featured Replies

This will be the same reason that they are talking about a Polo R AWD being available after they launch the Polo GTI 1.8TSI 2015

If Skoda can get on with a New Generation Fabia with some go since they are going Rallying

with the R5 1.6T in 2015 using the New Fabia Body Shape.

Skoda will look a bit silly with the Motorsport Heritage stuff if the best they do are Fabia with 110ps,

& sporty Octavia with 220ps.

Or even 'Special' ones to celebrate their Motorsport heritage with just 280ps

Just watched this (.apologies if it's been posted before) :

Surprised the Cupra was quicker, although I'd still much prefer to have an R.

Tom. yeah seen and watched a few times, also Steve Sutcliffe in Autocar.

Dry track only, not every day ,all weather conditions, which is what is important to me.

Not an M135i in sight! Lol

Haha yeah it would be a different story in the wet! Auto express went out the M135i with the AMG45 and the M-lite posted a 1.14.3 (different day but same driver) so a tad quicker than the golf but again slower than that pesky Cupra!

Cupra looks cheap tho imho so I'd rather have the golf. I'm sure the golf would slay both the Cupra and m-135i in the wet.

Horses for courses or what you like.

When dry then they can be fun. Even in the wet they can be, but not always easy to be fast-ish & safe.

Unless you do track days though, whats fastest in the wet isnt a problem is it?

It wouldnt be for me, on the road. I never race in the wet. Only takes a sneaky oil patch on a tight corner to catch you out doesnt it.

The bike gets ridden as smooth as silk and a skoda would overtake me in the wet. And i wouldnt be bothered at even risking it.

Spot on.

Spot on, I never push to hard in the wet on the road regardless of what car I'm in. I was mainly referring to track times really.

Not that track times really mean much to me, how the car makes you feel on the road is much more important! :-)

I imagine the m135i has got the 'feeling awesome' factor pretty much nailed.

It's not what's fastest in the wet, but what's safest in the wet :)

I doubt I'll go back to a 2WD car again (although never say never!).

I find the benefits of a AWD car are greatly extenuated in the wetter / greasier tarmac days; for obvious reasons. It make makes for a much easier, smoother and more relaxed drive :)

I'm not saying it's essential or neccessary, just preferable, especially when a car has easily the potential to lose traction under modest acceleration.

I know what you're saying

Doesnt make any difference whether its 4x4 or 2wd if you're just pootling around in wet weather though.

It only comes into play when you start pushing on doesnt it. Which personally, i wouldn't be doing haha.

When traction is lost under the tyres, say under braking on standing water or ice,

be it 2 wheel drive or 4, and the car is no longer under your control then the heavier car might be going faster backwards into the ditch.

& when you have more traction so you are able to think you can go faster,

you might actually just be faster when the traction does disappear.

Lots of the Performance orientated European Cars & Rest of the World cars arrive with all the good mechanicals and electric aids,

and crap tyres for Winter Use.

Or just not the best tyres for the safest use in the UK.

Lots of AWD SUV's & Sporty cars are over heavy lumps that are just sledges when traction is lost and they start to slide

& traction can not be regained.

True that mate. Tyre choice is king.

Like the illusion that some 4x4 drivers seem to have in the snow when they come flying past at about 50mph. N you're thinking, good luck tryna stop mate.

Exactly. Some drivers with 4WD seem to not realise it won't help them in the slightest when they are braking! It also doesn't make much (if any) difference to lateral grip. Useful for putting power down and boosting traction accelerating out of slippy corners though!

Yeah agreed.

I imagine itd be worse to stop tbh. Theyre such great big heavy things. So much weight pushing forward when they hit the brakes.

Yeah defo good for that. (:

I always buy the best. VW have supplied the R with Bridgestone S001's, not my preferred rubber :(

They seem OK but would prefer Goodyear Assymmetric 2 F1's or Conti SC5's.

I must say I'm not sure the majority of 4WD drivers actually brake differently because of the cars 4WD ability! I'm sure this is an internet myth that seems to be perpetuated for comedy value. Or maybe I'm just different & understand how the laws of physics work :D

I guess you're having to wait for them to wear down before fitting something decent then?

I dont like the bridgestones on my car either :(

Exactly! 4x4 is about the ability to get going. Nothing to do with stopping. Apart from the extra weight which doesnt help at all haha

Now 3 months and 3000 miles of ownership.

Not a better hatch about for cross country, all weather quick but safe driving, in my opinion. Car's handling, Balance, control and general traction is brilliant and much fun.

Majority of the 3000 miles is done so far on a mix of country roads, A,B and C .with some m4 and m5 . Very similar to my previous Octavia vRS MK3.(TSI)

R running in mainly Normal mode, as was the Octy, R returning 35 mpg with the Octy doing 37 mpg.

Longer motorway trip recently R returned 37.5 mpg ,average from the Octy, having covered 11500 before sold,  was 39.0 mpg.

Not much difference in mpg but by heck what a difference in driving experience!

Yes it cost a lot more cash but worth every penny and looking at the mk6 on residual for a guide, then it  will be  reducing my depreciation losses as well.

Think it may be a keeper, well until the mk8 arrives in 400 bhp form.

Conti 2's on mine, seem fine currently. Let's see what happens when winter comes down South

Does winter ever 'come down South'? Haha

Good summing up Keith, glad you are pleased with the beast!

Only note of caution I would say on the depreciation front is the potential impact on used values of all the lease cars being put back on the market in 2-3 years time. It seems a huge amount of R's have been snapped up on the dirt cheap deals which may have a negative effect. I don't recall the mk6 R selling half as well or these cheap leases on it. Not that it matters a jot if the car is a long term keeper!

If the Estate version when it arrives is available on a crazy lease price I'd be sorely tempted to chop our a Fabia in for one.

Tom,

Noticed that quite a few mk6 owners are px for mk7. Noticeable on VW dealer websites. Not sure if the throw away deals were that influential in volume of sales. Guess maybe similar to Octavia vRS mk3. Short lived.

That's why I'd be tempted by a lease rather than buying like I usually do.  If I was getting one of course.

I don't know the sales figures, but it's likely there are a lot of them out there as the deals were so good.

Estate.  Mmmm.....

I saw that EVO did the best 10 driving cars for 2014 recently.

No S3 in there to compare, but the S1 came 10th and the Golf R 4th... behind a Ferrari, Jag and the Porker.

Boss,

Could you link or send me a copy of that article in Evo,  as I've not seen it.

Cheers.

Keith

PS. I see that VW have applied a minor increase in the base price model. £29990 to £30150.

Has there been a general price review by VW lately?

Edited by vrskeith

Waitrose might have them on the magazine rack.

It is a good issue.'203'.

They are running a Skoda Octavia vRS in 'Fast Fleet',

Nissan GTR, Seat Cupra 280, Ford Fiesta ST & a Golf GTI among others.  Something for everyone.

Best issue i have read since the one before this.
