  • For 23k I'd be in a Cayman.  Not a bleeding Polo.

  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

Golf R 5 door DSG + Basic Nav and Lapis blue = £266 per month (23+6), total cost for two years of £7,714. + VAT. (£9,256.80p)

£385.70p per month real cost.

How much without the nav? not worth adding on a lease deal

It adds about £25 per monthly payment. (10%!)

My wife can 't find anywhere she hasn't been loads of times without it.

An integrated system is a must for us.

Traded the yeti in yet? :D (the 1.2 TSI one not the brisk Yetis)

That's where lease deals don't stack up as well. Basically you pay full list price for something that you are just renting :(

Great review Richard. :-)

I agree the Golf R is amazing value on some of the lease deals (although these are no longer quite as stunning as they were a few months ago). If I was looking again I would be very tempted with one.

It's worth factoring in discount levels if paying cash or PCP too. It's easy to get discounts of £6k on the M135i which would likely bring the car you specced down to £28k. A base spec manual M135i comes in at £25k with discount which is very good bang for buck imho.

It's very interesting to hear about the S3 and golf R having different driving characteristics despite being mechanically 'the same underneath'. Good to know the different brands have been free to dial in some of their own individuality!

For me personally tho (if I could only have one) I'd still much rather have a six-cylinder BMW than a four-cylinder Volkswagen. Now if only I can complete my mission to get SWMBO into a Golf R I'll be sorted...... ;-)

OSV leasing have a November special on these.

£1200 down followed by 23 months of £199 + vat.

Works out at just under £6700 all in or £278 per month inc VAT

10,000 miles per year. Not sure on which spec vehicle it applies too, but a keen price regardless.

Sorry no link.

Would you have considered the new Leon Cupra Richard? Or would it need to be a 4wd really?

Boss,

"I used to be indecisive but now I 'm not sure"

Interesting review ,under pressured conditions.

However,I made my choice after testing the similar group test, just shows how different we all are .

Vive la difference.

At the risk of upsetting most of the forum... I just don't see the point of big bhp cars with front wheel drive.

At the Leon Cupra level, tuning would give you more power that you can't use most of the time. :D

I'd rather thave the Fiesta ST.  It's 70% of the speed of the cars above, 90% of the fun and 50% of the cost.

Buy a standard 5 door and use the ST as a donor car? ;)

Exactly.

I thought the S3 would be better than the others, then got surprised by the Golf's better set up for fun and found out the BMW was also better than expected.

On cost, the Golf R is the obvious choice on previous deals.

But I can see why people would choose all three.

Overall not one single one of them was clearly ahead of any of the others to warranty putting a deposit down.

Considering waiting for the RS3 next year. :D

I think I should have bought the Golf R when the cheaper deals were about.

Instead of waiting, missing the boat and then getting an A8.  Although the barge is great for daily use so I'm not complaining.

Exactly.

I had a lease offer through on the GolfR of £220 per month inc VAT, 3 + 24 and 10,000 miler per annum, very cost efficient way to get into a very quick hatch.

Can't wait for Sharky to have a bit of lift off oversteer with the Whitline kit on, I've a feeling it will out drive a lot of cars on the windy stuff, can't wait to try her on a track next year :)

Just off out to enjoy the R, in the bloody awful weather conditions in Wiltshire today!

Continue the discussion later, have a good driving day all.

Just catching up with the thread this morning... as i was out last night and missed the updates.

Just wanted to thank Richard for the write-up on the test drives and dealer experience.

Is that deal still on and with whom? Two reasons one I'm looking for lease deals for the fleet I run on day to day basis and possibly getting something nice for myself... maybe.

God this car is so good in these weather conditions, on country roads - now waiting for the new winter snow conditions for that experience.

Exactly.

One for the missus-bargain.

Reading Dealership - 6000 miles demo @ £29990 (negotiable) well spec'd.

Edited by vrskeith

Similar price as a Drive the Deal car in the same spec. :)  (£10 under £30,000)

I have been online to check and DtD can get you £4k off a Golf R and £3k off an S3.

Edit:

Spec I want is £29,850.16p after a discount of £4,213.85p

That's not far off what I'd spend on a top end well specified Yeti... (not that I'd buy the facelift)

I got over £5K off a pre-reg new car similar spec -(25 miles on clock) and a good PX deal from Northampton VW .
