New Golf R

Certainly a few guys at my work wishing they had jumped at the Golf R now....

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

It truly is a great car but then I biased.

I was one of the lucky ones who got in early :)

Having had the car 5 weeks now I have only covered 500 miles! Loads of other stuff including holidays have got in the way.

I am however going to match my first 5 weeks mileage in one weekend starting in 2 hours time.

Travelling to see my wifes folks up in the NW, and the last 50 miles are some very interesting and involving b roads, so can't wait :D

I must say though I have been very impressed with the overall package, something that can double as a proper family car and a very quick hot hatch.

It does raise a point about these 'cheaper' lease deals that pop up when a car is first released.

I think it is a good marketing strategy to get the first cars sold, get them onto the streets and people talking about them.

I live in the Manchester area and personally have seen loads of the new Golf R's about. It makes me wonder how many were sold via the competitive lease price and how many were from another form of finance / deal.

Am I right in saying the BMW M135i had a similar competitive deal on it's release?

Either way, a lot of car for the money!

Good to hear that all the hype was worth it - and you are happy with the car!

Local dealer to me ,sold all three of their demo car in 3 weeks leading up to the new reg.

£30500 manual 3 dr - £33500 DSG.5dr.

Think Furbytom posted recently that he got £6.0k off his BMW M135i but not sure what method of ownership he chose.

My car spec'd on VW configurator is £35500 but I got over £5500 off, on the Pre-Reg deal, just prior to the New Reg.

Have another enjoyable and smile raising drive!

It's a shame Skoda won't be launching a Fabia mk3 vRS, equivalent to a Audi S1 ,might have saved some money and had an even Broader Smile!

Without wanting to be rude I wasn't that worried about pictures, I've seen them in the blue and they do look very nice.

I had a test drive and I was impressed, but think I need a longer one for a better idea because it wasn't quite as involving as the Fiesta ST I have now but far better as a daily all year round car for a family.

Think I missed the main boat when the cheaper lease deals were out.  Although that does limit tweaking a little...

Have thought about one a few times.  But not sure I need one if you know what I mean. :D

Was curious how the car was going, guessed you'd be "settling in" about now after the initial buzz.

Boss,

Go on, you know it makes sense!

Hope that you enjoy the chase.

Just reading EVO.

Golf R verses the Impreza STI.

Two 296bhp four wheel drive cars.

They clearly prefer the former for a number of reasons.

Think Furbytom posted recently that he got £6.0k off his BMW M135i but not sure what method of ownership he chose.

List price was just a few quid shy of £36k with all the options I chose. Discounted price was bang on £30k :-)

Went for a PCP again.

I know someone who picked their new red Golf R up in the last week.  It was a box fresh showroom car with a lot of extras to tempt people into buying one.  He didn't want the 4 month wait that they suggested he might have to endure so bought the showroom car instead.  I saw him in Scarborough's North Bay the day he collected it and it really did look good in the evening's setting sun with less than 40 miles on the clock.

The only reservation I have about them is that I sometimes have to look twice to see if it's an R or a more basic version with a few extras on top.  The old R32 was less stealth and was instantly recognisable from a distance.  I guess it's my problem though and as a complete chav who drives a VXR I like a bit of bling.

They do sound nice for a 4 pot.  One went past me the other day as I was out walking with the kids and VW must have spent quite a while engineering the sound to get such a nice set of pops & crackles as standard.

What do you think to them in red?

My uncles got a red one on order which should arrive in a few weeks.

After a red 06 plate gti, a brief break with a white scirroco, then 2 more red GTI's, hes getting quite predictable!

I think he might like red...

Iv not seen a red R yet though and I'm not sure if its the right colour choice tbh.

There are at least 2 on the VW website for used-demo cars, one at about £28500(std car) I think.

Just checked one in dealer at Aylesbury-reasonable spec, 19 alloys 5 door £29990 manual with 7800 miles

It suits the red very well.  There's another two that I know of knocking round Scarborough, one black, one blue.  They can slip under the radar as they are very subtle but the red stands out quite a bit more.  It looks a bit more racy than the understated colours but the lad who bought it is only 28 years old so that suits him nicely.  Most of the people I've seen driving them are, without wanting to offend anyone, from the more mature age bracket. :notme:

Or like the stealth look - under the radar suits an old bugger like me!! (well not that old, in the scheme of things)

Next move will be to remove the ident model badges - only joking! (That would make me feel 25 again! - No      )

Glad it's going well :) the R/S3 are really surprisingly quick to 60 :)

Kenny,

Hope that you are enjoying your S3, as much as I am enjoying my R.

Baring in mind my Yeti has similar power and 4x4 also I'm not surprised.

And that's not a VAG designed version, it's a lower model with a bigger turbo bolted on.

I'd imaging the R/S3 is very polished in the 0-60mph dash as that's one of it's strengths with great traction.

In the real world, I doubt much can compete.

Don't forget the Fabia 2.0

That doesn't hit 60mph in around 5 seconds from a standing start.

  the RS3 is a seriously impressive machine and in the real world on roads when adhering to speed limits etc not much will be able to touch it in that similar price range that is standard

I asked my uncle why he didnt go for an rs3. He reckons its based on the old a3 and is really outdated.

I dont know myself, i dont know much about em, apart from they look mega!
