  • Wow! A bit of a fly on the wall comment in jest has been turned into me supposedly taking the credit for the size of the thread!?! Err...ok...   Just to clarify, I have far more important things to

  • Apologies is this thread is going a bit "off topic", but I'll carry on anyway as there is Golf R content... This is my personal experience of the S3, Golf R and M135i and the respective test drives.

Thanks George-ski, useful vids, but this however is rather interesting. Dark horse, ticks several boxes for me maybe...Sutters liked it anyway.

I've already said I don't want / need an estate to carry bikes, unless the rear seat don't fold down, do they? I'm also aware that it can be mapped, more interested to hear the experience from those who have had it done.

There are used/demo ones in dealers.

But they seem to cost the the same or more as a brand new one with a bit of internet discount.

I'm in vw now. Seat/skoda this afternoon so I'll have comparative figures.

On the basis of good, better, best: diesel vrs hatch (maybe plus remap), leon 280, Golf R. Am about to test drive the R with DSG but only allowed "around the block" so won't get much of an idea.

This months 'CAR' Magazine worth a read IMO

December issue '629'

Merc GLA 45 AMG vs Audi RS Q3

Audi S6 Avant.

'our cars'

Seat Leon Cupra

VW Golf GTI

Ford Fiesta ST

Skoda Octavia vRS TDI Estate

BMW 235i

Audi S1 Sportback          & more.

Already been there George. OK, there is one available. White 5 door, DSG, sunroof and keyless entry. Almost completely the wrong spec colour and options, so if I want the Golf from the dealer it's a 6 month wait.

Plus, that internal sound is loud, I mean loud, and very very artificial. I'm not much of a fan tbh it's a bit cheesy.

I never noticed that, but then i am Mutt n' Jeff.

£750 pm for brand new R in my spec plus a 8k used polo 1.2 tsi R line. Seems a bit steep

£750 per month? Nearly fell off my chair lol.

Is that for two cars then? How come you need the polo?

Wife!

Wife!

Ahh ok, need to keep her sweet so she signs off on the golf lol! I know the feeling.

If you separate out the two how much are they wanting per month for the R?

That has got to be a joke.

My A8 was offered to me at £100 per month less than that.

Right back at home.

So, there is £1k equity in my octy against a 4 yr pcp for the Golf, which works out at £565 pcm.

The Polo is a 14 plate 8k miles with £500 from me, £500 from the dealer comes out at £275pcm. This is the problem, that's more than my vrs, which was £2k more OTR and 20k miles / year (the polo is only 10k)

Let's see what the original selling dealer (SEAT / Skoda) can come up with.

What indicated annual milages did you quote?

I know you do a lot of miles and it might go some way to explain your figures.

That's the rub Richard, those are based on 10k/yr. TBH mileage is irrelevant unless you hand the car back on a PCP deal. Lease is different altogether, and the best lease price I could find for me is £460 a month, excluding maintenance. The dealer offer inbcludes 3 services, plus GAP plus options that i didn't spec in the lease.

It's the price of the Polo that is not right

If there is a used 280 kicking around at >£100 per month with a similar Ibiza then I'd got for that, but you know the Golf wasn't insanely quicker than the Octy. In fact I was surprised how slow it felt, though it was new and I was on a short test drive so not the same I know, but even so, it didn't exactly blow my socks off....

That's plain bonkers then.

You can get one online for at least £200 per month cheaper over 2 years.

Sounds that way. More research needed

£565 sounds steep, what was the additional spec you added?

Might be worth trying an M135i - will be waaay cheaper on PCP than that ( sorry to those of you who might think I bang on about the baby-M, I'm not on commission, honest!).

Actually I think he should by my Fiesta ST for £14k.

Could buy it outright over four years for around £350 per month. :D

I checked Select vehicles Ltd. this morning.

They quote £402 p.m. £1200 initial payment over 36 months/10,000miles per annum.

That's a 5 door manual R.

Thanks for the offer Richard, but I can't see myself trundling up and down the M1 in it. George, the only 2.0 diesel engine I'd consider is one under the bonnet of a vRS (or similarly priced / specced / handling VAG model).

M135i is tempting, but I don't like the look of the 1 series.

Tom, the additional options were the audio upgrade, dynamic chassis thing, 19" wheels, metallic paint. I don't have the original spec sheet in front of me. I'm more perturbed by the lack of horizon grabbing acceleration. I guess the real fun is with the chassis, which is where my Octy is lacking in composure / comfort and body control. If nothing else it highlights how good the remap is.

That's pretty good. It would be around £60-75 pcm more for 25k a month for me, plus I don't have £1200 first payment. The big hassle with the lease is selling my car (which has outstanding finance, so not easy) in order to release the equity for the deposit. Plus lease companies are the least sympathetic when it comes to the value upon return, every chip, defect, mark etc is noted and the price adjusted accordingly. This was my experience with many years of company cars when changing lease suppliers, and a couple of private leases with Lex a few years ago. PCP might not be the cheapest option, but it's easy and flexible once your into a brand.

Was it the Seat Leon that you did not like the noise of today.?

They are usually happy to price you happy to get you into the Brand.

the problem usually is that getting back out costs except when buying keepers.

I have no idea about with a lease.
