New Golf R

Featured Replies

Interesting that 8 years, with the pace of change. Think I read recently that VW are now proposing 5 years life cycles.

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/89367/vw-s-five-year-cycle-means-even-more-new-cars

Shorter life cycles may be also for financial reasons. Bring out a new model can generate new sales with people who have to have "the latest thing" rushing to trade in....

But maybe I'm just being cynical lol.

The face lifted F20/F21 1-series will be getting the new tech 3-cyl turbo petrol engines as fitted to the mini and in various states of tune. They sound quite good apparently!

I remember reading this and thinking '2018'  that will be chocolate, this will be sooner, they want to see peoples reaction.

& then its Auto Express so no chance, the have their 'Insiders'  ie,  BMW Media DEpartment.

But who knows with BMW.

They need to get their cars lighter though, they have some Bloaters, including the MINI Countryman.

BMW 4x4 M1 Super Hatch is the very likely model.

sooner rather than later.

Interesting to see a number of break ins on FB, to get keys and take the Golf R parked outside. :(

Was it the R with the keyless entry thefts too?

No idea.

House broken into for the key.

No sorry that was BMWs. That's exactly why at work all the cars are locked in and no keys are left on the premises

Yep definitely bmw that. Apparently the loophole is now closed (I hope!) :-)

I can see us ordering at some point in the second half of next year :-)

I prefer that to the hatchback.

The quad exhausts also look somehow more acceptable on the estate too.

Can't argue with a 605L boot either. Definitely a good all rounder.

That looks great, my perfect car! Hoping I can afford a used one in 2018 when I'll be looking at changing cars. Here's hoping!

But not as much as the New deposit paid Audi RS3.Lol.

Same here mate.

This was posted on another thread earlier :

SWMBO had a look at the vids and she's definitely coming round to it lol! Game on....! :-)

From the Autocar article, is it a correct assumption that it's DSG ONLY? As no mention of a manual box.

The Autoexpress article confirms DSG only.

Would be abit odd if they only offered a DSG but would suit us as SWMBO wouldn't go for a manual. :-)

Right, back on topic R fans.

For costing purposes when I visit my local friendly VW dealer tomorrow for some "exploratory" talks, what options are critical to the R?

I want a stereo upgrade to counter the mind numbing twice a month trundle from South wales up to North Yorks, which will be mostly M-way of course. I want a 3 door, so that's great form a £££ POV, am not sure about the DSG though. I like the idea, but none of the mags prefer it, and it's not cheap, especially if it goes wrong. I'm not really interested in adding fripperies like heated seats, but the chassis upgrades might be worth it. If you've got to pay for "race" mode soundtrack, no thanks for a false piece of plastic shoved in the front bulkhead (as they all do as it happens, even on a Evoque!). One detail I've not been yet able to ascertain is folding rear seats!?? I need to be able to stick a bike or two in the back, so this is critical. If they don't, it's off the list.

Lastly, and in this instance probably least importantly immediately, indeed if ever, has anyone remapped one (or this powertrain to be more specific)

The Golf R has a sound generator.

As to the DSG, maybe decide for your self after driving, because these Magazine Roadtesters often drive nothing like the cars they go on about for their own personal cars.

Not many own & drive the wonderful GT86 / BRZ that was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I am more inclined to pay attention to the 'Long Term Testers' Photographers etc, that cover many road miles in their vehicles.

The rear space is as with other 3 door Golfs.

& for carrying bikes but with more space, the Golf R Estate is coming soon, but only with DSG.

Yes the 300 PS cars can be Re-mapped and can void the Warranty on the Engine Drivetrain.

(but we have had that conversation often before, and i know you say that is only on the parts concerned,

well that includes the Engine.)

As to the DSG going wrong, thats where a Valid 5 year warranty is worth its weight.

I've already said I don't want / need an estate to carry bikes, unless the rear seat don't fold down, do they? I'm also aware that it can be mapped, more interested to hear the experience from those who have had it done.

Road testers either like or dislike the DSG, but i wonder where they keep finding 'Media / Press' cars with the DSG boxes they describe,

or is it they are just not used to Automatics and choose Sport or something.

It's refundable.

Got my name on the list... just in case. ;)

Chances are, I'll just jazz up the Yeti.

Hmm. 5-6 months wait for a new one. I'm about to go and see if I can strike a deal for a one, plus somehting more sensible for the wife, but I really don't want to wait that long! Maybe a Leon 280 is the answer, but it would have to be a stunning deal to tempt me away from the 4WD handling.
