Elite: Dangerous

Top shields for  the Cobra (A4) are 1.5m cr.  Had no bother before this underhand and sneaky attack,   Blind Pew has had his card marked. (which is a bit ironic.)

Yes so if you do want to be able to stand and fight, you need to pay a fair packet to be properly equipped to do so.

A couple of pictures of my gorgeous Python. It is an absolute beast of a ship.

  • I'm not doing that again!   The ZX spectrum version ate 2 years of my lfe, and the 16bit rerun on the Atari ST / Amiga saw off another year.   I havent got enough years left to play Elite another

120,000 credits, half way to my cobra! :)

Half way to buying it but not equipping it. Personally I would rather wait until you can afford to put better equipment otherwise you could spend a lot on insurance as people will target cobras

Conflict zones are mental. Killed a Python, Anaconda, Eagles and Vipers before deciding not to push my luck.

I've been to one, and just sat and watched for a while... then ran away!

linking this to another topic - I have installed Elite on my 8.1 tablet and guess what - it works  but very slowly and laggy. The "automatic" device detection has decided to set the settings to high. I'll set them all to low and see what happens.

Not surprised it runs slow!

You might just get it playable on low settings though.

How do you control it on a tablet ??

Haven't got that far yet...  joypad? keyboard? Mind control?  :D

On low setting it's just barely unplayable - to get a playable frame rate needed to drop the screen res down to vga - but that just makes the screen a fuzzy mess.  Installed it on the i5 laptop instead works fine on that but not as well as the £30 cpu in the  desktop.

Spent a little time on Saturday doing a couple of "rare runs"  starting at Lave and collecting all the rare goods around there and then taking the 182ly trip out to Jaroua and selling all the goods (only 32t as still in the Cobra) , then to Aerial and then to Coquim and then to Tanmark (just be careful if you do this as the Onionhead is iilegal in Fed space)  and then back to Lave. So far managed to upgrade to A4 FSD, B4 Shield, A4 PSU, B4 power distributor, A1 fuel Scoop (this means I can do the 180 ly odd trips without stopping )  and have upgraded the weapons. Had a little play yesterday with the intermediate Scanner and the detailed surface scanner to see what the return was like on exploring,  Got attacked a couple of times doing this and it takes a lot of time using the detailed scanner and from what I can see doesn't seem to add much to price you get when you sell the data.  I was getting 3 to 4kcr for each system just discovering objects and perhaps a few hundred more with a detailed scan,  I suppose it might depend on the planet's contents (these where are ice and rock).

Cool :) I have south to look forward to... Just trading and doing missions in my adder to build up money at the moment .... This game has lots to offer, it's so open ended!

Doing the "rare" runs is a great way of getting the cash up quickly.  In the Cobra it works out about 2 *32 * 16k cr for each circular route. (~1mcr) .It gets quicker as you upgrade you ship (greater jump range). and has got so much easier with the better route planner introduced in 1.1 on Wednesday. Even in a Adder you could make ~20* 16k cr in a one run one way. (assuming you can get two 8 and a 4 cargo rack in and a small shield)

It is getting a bit boring doing the same thing though  so I'm going to kit out for exploration and go and see what I can see.

The new route planner makes it so much quicker to do rare runs.

Now upgraded to a cobra (with a decent armament and shield set up as well as decent cargo space). The viper and hauler both got sold as the cobra is pretty much the all rounder. Might buy a freighter down the line if I want to push the cargo size but i think thats a way off.

I was looking at upgrading to an Asp - but  a bit put off by the insurance cost (and the cost of kitting it out!) - but it does seem to be a good comprise - of weapons. cargo, shields and jump range.

Forgot to say the other thing that has sped up my rare runs is an upgraded fuel scoop - the one on the hauler only managed 18/s, the new one is 45/s so fuelling in a fraction of the time.

how has the route planner changed? I still just click the route button in the star map when I cant make it in one jump.....

Yes, you can pick target system up to 1000ly away and it will plot the route. It used to try to plot the route on the fly before and it would take forever after 60ly. So if you wanted to go from Lave to Jaroua (182ly) you can plot the route easily.

Previously the limit was 100ly so for doing rare runs it was absolutely useless as they require 160+ for a good return.

Is there a guide to doing the rare runs? - im running dangerously short on cash so i may have to chop in my viper for a panel van for a while to do some trading..

Im around SOL at the moment... its rather boring

This is quite good - linky.

So long as the distance is over 160ly you make a pretty good return on the purchase price.

Well just back from a 2000ly round trip. Equipped with a advanced discovery scanner ( I meant to take a Detailed Surface Scanner as well but forgot and by the time I'd realised it was too far to turn back) I suppose that was way over a hundred jumps.  It was a bit tedious but on by return made 652kcr on selling the data - they say that the detailed scan give 30% more - but for the time it takes that is not much.  My technique was jump in scoop a bit, scan and jump on to the next one . I braved it with no weapons to increase the jump range. I didn't do a lot of in system scanning although when selling the data I got several messages saying that I was the first one to discover certain bodies (the bonus for that was pretty small (136cr). Once you are out 500ly or so you don't see a soul.  Within that range you see the  odd sidewider or Eagle.

well, finally got my cobra! left me a little short of cash, but I equipped it with 20 tons of cargo space, and a docking computer......

LOVING the docking computer! lol.... I remember the music it plays, used to do that on the old BBC game! :o

building up money again, and going to pimp this one out to a battle machine, then go hunting :)

I have a "pass" for sol... but its a long way from where i am now..... dont know if its worth going....

the fed keeps trying to send me on "black ops" missions... waiting till I get some decent fire power and defenses before i start killing people ;)
