Elite: Dangerous

Featured Replies

Currently running with 2Mill and a half upgraded Cobra (a number of systems upgraded and a number still to go).

Still doing rare runs at about 1mill/round trip.

Might have a go at something different as I reckon the ship is now at a solid enough point that I can actually engage in combat without bricking it

Wings sounds like it will be very interesting if you can find a number of like minded gamers

A couple of pictures of my gorgeous Python. It is an absolute beast of a ship.

  • I'm not doing that again!   The ZX spectrum version ate 2 years of my lfe, and the 16bit rerun on the Atari ST / Amiga saw off another year.   I havent got enough years left to play Elite another

I was trying to get a permit for Alioth, but it's even more boring than trading.  I'm reasonably happy with my ship (Cobra) at the moment, ( Everything upgraded apart from the thrusters) The big Fuel scoop is a marvel - if you go via most economical routes it refills in seconds.  I'm  going to go on another wander  to see if I can pick up some more "First Discovered by" .  Two shortish exploration runs  have netted over 2mcr  and increased my explorer rank to "Trialblazer" .  It's a much slower than trading.

I'm sticking with the Cobra   for exploration as even if you go unarmed  (for the extra 0.5ly jump range) you can still "boost" your way out of trouble if you have an A3 power distributor.

Got really annoyed a couple of nights back - was about 10 secs from being within distance of Lave on a rares run when I got interdicted. Bearing in mind I had about 600K worth of goods on board, I really didn't want to stop. Tried boosting, still in range and was killed within about 10 secs by the attacker (god knows what he was using as guns!). Insured so only thing I lost was time and about 10k (cost of buying the rares at the other end)

Where you in Open or solo?  I had this as well in the past,  always a risk around that rare group.  Upgrade the Power Distribution to the Max allowed (I think its an A3) allows you to boost more often.

Anyway I'm currently somewhere out by the North American Nebula - debating whether to come back or go out further (if I can make up my mind which way I want to go.).

Always play in open- just feels like cheating a bit playing solo.

I thought my power distribution/shields etc were pretty well upgraded but this things lasers cut my shields down in seconds.

There is some well-known hacks going round at the moment that basically make people invunrable/unlimited ammo/power.. they basically greif people.

Ive spent the last couple of nights grinding away at nav points and combat zones - getting my head round the various upgrades.. i see theres quite a need to keep weight down to maintain decent agility, especially in a viper.

Im finding that with decent B-spec sheilds, beams and multi-cannons that i can do a fair bit of damage to 'condas.. just need to stay away from the plasma accellerator on their nose!

wow... £10k richer though!

right, done my first bit of slave trading.... more difficult than I thought! approaching an unnamed anarchy outpost, I was intradicted 4 times :o

1: he got the better of me, I jumped when my shields were gone (bloody lucky too , he had just launched a missile!)

2: I got the better of him (he was in a fighter too!) and I thought I'd have him, but he jumped after I downed his shields :(

3+4 : I evaded.

lots of interesting stuff for sale...

whats the difference between slaves, and imperial slaves?!

anyway, made a nice 50,000 profit on a measly 2 cargo spaces :)

need beam lasers next....

Not a good start to this game for me.

I went through all the training tutorials before going live.

At my first port I tried to land on the wrong pad, twice, and got fined a total of 1000CR. I then took on a challenge that was too difficult and got killed three times.

Noobs eh.

Try a bit of exploring - it pays better than trading until you have enough cargo space.

pad number shown on central display when you have docking permission....

another thing to remember, when you dock on a "platform" type outpost, you need to be the right way round to land!

another upgrade, military grade alloy added :) better resistance against all sorts of attack.... did a little more slave trading, and had to fight my way to the slavers, they nearly got me! lol.... I'm a bit tougher now :)

Yes, sussed that one now.

Got an FSD and engine upgrade now plus 8 cargo spaces so the money is slowly creeping up.

Try a "rare" run with 8 cargo it will net over 100kcr.

Anyway while out in the dark yonder - I've been mucking about with flight assist off. Very interesting to be flying backwards  :nerd:  might be fun in a dogfight.  . It will need a bit more practise to get the hang of it though, as it quite hard to get the ship facing in the direction of travel again.

Only realised the other day that  if you target the Coriolis space stations a little arrow points to the "letterbox" - i was still using the old method that the "letterbox" faces the planet,

After a couple more noob errors I'm finally getting the hang of this game.

I have got rid of two cargo bays and purchased a fuel scoop, having to self destruct in deep space with a full cargo load is not much fun.

I have also plotted a trade route then forgotten to purchase the goods before setting off!

Elite Trading Tool (http://elitetradingtool.co.uk/) is fantastic, a way to make some serious money at my level.

you done much fighting yet? I find that most fun, I just need to equip my cobra to the gills before I start being a mercenary though ;)

Just back from the Fetus nebula and sold my "maps" to the uc at Lambda Andromedae there after registering for their community goal to collect system data. Awards are some cash (min 30k) and a discount on an Asp currently 15percent. As i was heading back I thought I'd take advantage.

well, finally got my cobra! left me a little short of cash, but I equipped it with 20 tons of cargo space, and a docking computer......

LOVING the docking computer! lol.... I remember the music it plays, used to do that on the old BBC game! :o

building up money again, and going to pimp this one out to a battle machine, then go hunting :)

I have a "pass" for sol... but its a long way from where i am now..... dont know if its worth going....

the fed keeps trying to send me on "black ops" missions... waiting till I get some decent fire power and defenses before i start killing people ;)

I played the original and remember that I got as far as 'Dangerous' by running guns. Although my overriding memory is of the Docking Computer. It was bloody rubbish and usually crashed and knocked bits of the side of the craft :D And before anyone says women drivers, my boyfriend at the time usually did the driving :D

If you played the old game Amanda, you should try the new one, its pretty good!

(and the docking computer works!lol)

I remember my bf had to load the game off a cassette, which was almost as exciting as the game as to whether it would load correctly or not :D I don't think I have the computing power to run the game smoothly (although I do have a laptop with i7, 8GB RAM and 2 GB of an older mobile Gfx card. But I don't really enjoy the rapid blast 'em type of game, I liked the original because nothing happened too quickly, unless you dropped out of hyperspace and were attacked by the police. Even then, the limitations of the BBC Micro meant it was still pretty slow :)

It not that computer intensive strangely enough -  it did run on my i5 laptop with dedicated graphics (although it was not on the high settings -until it died - I even think it would have run on my win 8.1 tablet see above if it have 4gb or ram instead of 2gb) I'm currently running it on a pentium G3420 with an HD5670  gfx (hardly cutting edge). As   regard to fighting it's easily avoided if  you keep to the safe places. Exploring is a little bit safer unless of course you are out 1000ly and your canopy cracks and you only have 15 minutes of air.

And compared to the BBC version it's a lot quicker to Load,   :p  (which you can also download - with emulator if you are feeling nostalgic).

For those exploring -  I can  do approx. 8 jumps every 10 minutes (each jump -=FSD charge, Jump, Scoop and advance discovery Scan) with no interdictions - on max range routing, 1000ly takes about 1hr 10mins.  If you want to get "first Discovered by" tags it will take an awful lot longer (5 to 15mins per system with the detail surface scanner). Up to Pathfinder rank on the exploring.

I think I might have to have a go at improving my combat rank from "Mostly Harmless" next .

If I remember correctly (I am going back around 30 years :D) We didn't get anywhere in ranking, until we started to run Furs, Guns and such like. Eventually we became 'Dangerous; and almost every time we went anywhere we were besieged by the Police and shot at :( I think I remember there being a long range scanner (?) as I think we knew when we were going to drop out of Light speed and into a world of pain :D

I havent been shot at by police yet, and I have been flying into anarchy systems (always getting interdicted!) buying slaves, and flying back to federation systems to sell them :)
