New Fabia III vs New Hyundai I20

Saw the article in the current copy of What Car? about the new Hyundai I20 and thought not a bad looking car.

 

They thought the diesel would be a good choice. I think it may be a good choice considering the SE is a grand cheaper than a base SE Fabia 90ps 1.4Tdi without the options that I would like on the Fabia which are included on the Hyundai.

 

Pluse of course you get 2 more years warranty on a Hyundai....

 

Plus I configurated a Kombi diesel and it come out at over £17000!

I really don't get the prices, £2k premium for a diesel, and £2k premium for the estate / combi, so if you want a diesel estate you have £4k to find straight away

 

this is the reason I am looking at a hatch with tow-bar and 90PS 1.2 TSi to replace my GLII estate, and going to compare the polo against fabia 3 in January when the fabia 3 hit the dealers for test drives

 

the current Q1 2015 offer for the fabia doesn't inspire me to buy, so it will come down to how they drive and how the interior / driving position feel

I really like the look of the new Fabia Kombi estate to replace my current car but looking at the prices as you say, the premium for a diesel estate is astronomical. Unfortunately due to the health of our dog, I don't believe an estate will be necessary in the near future anyway.....

Everything to do with costing at the moment is hypothetical anyway. January isn't long to go now.

the combi don't hit the showrooms until march

 

so you have got another 3 months to wait for it

 

the only thing you will have is the hatch to sit in and check out the position and comfort, just won't be able to see the extra room of the boot

When we bought our TSI Spaceback in July the dealers sales people indicated then that new car diesel prices would be noticeably going up with the introduction of Euro VI engines and therefore felt that the TSI would become the private buyers engine of choice, even with those doing higher annual mileage.

 

I do on average 13 to 14k a year and getting close to 50mpg, which I don't feel is bad for a petrol with reasonable performance.

I am considerning the new shape i20 myself but in petrol variant, i don't do enough miles to go for an oil burner, just going to wait later in the year when the newer petrol engines are rumoured to be coming out, at the moment the ' new ' car will be lauched with the current model's engines in..... the spec though ! Its stunning, it beats the Fabia hands down and can see this being my next car with our other ' city ' car being the i10 Premium 1.2 to replace our aged 1.9TDI Elegance Fabia.

Looking good from Hyundai IMO.

The Fabia hatch has competition i would imagine, the Estate might be where Skoda have the jump on other Manufacturers.

Or some areas of the UK that had 2 cold weather payment triggers already but have plenty of days where the temp stays below 0.oC

Went to look at the I20 yesterday and it is impressive but not in the same league as Polo for quality. Opened up the bonnet and had a look at a rather primitive looking engine bay! Maybe I'm used to everything being covered in cowlings? Shame I couldn't get the bonnet to shut!

Back seats were comfy and boot good size.

still as expensive as the Mk3 Fabia on the best model in the range though..

colour choices with interiors are very limiting..

 

0-60 times are rubbish though..even Usain Bolt could beat it over 100m.. :D

See, all those bleating on about the i20, they may be better than previous versions but price wise they're no better than the new Fabia, if you want a Hyundai then buy one just don't come on a Skoda website to then slag them off.

thing is, comparing the spec and basic price is one thing

 

but question is how much of the spec do we really need / use?

 

this is where the skoda wins with some people as although the polo etc is better spec if you don't need it then the fabia is a better option if the price reflects the lower spec

 

as to the Hyundai, I am looking at it as an option (fabia, polo, i20 is the current short list) amd I intend to sort out a weekend when I can go and visit all 3 for test drives etc in the same day, so that I can make a better comparison as all three will be fresh in my mind

I test drove the new i20 this weekend, i priced up the new Premium SE model with metallic and on a PCP with no deposit it worked out over 42 months at £230 a month. The spec is impressive and i found the quality of the interior to be good, i have not sat in the polo yet but compared to my Mk2 Fabia its the equal, not yet seen the Mk3 so can not comment. I then test drove the 1.4 petrol 6 speed in the SE guise, again very nice, not rocket ship speeds but the majority of the people who buy Fabia's (and now the Hyundai) are after a well made and economical car at a decent price.... this is the i20's hunting ground. The gearbox was super slick and it was so quiet i had to keep blipping the pedal ! I will be waiting before i order for the new engine range to come in around summer time, but the car was a big step up from the older model and a real choice for possible Fabia owners, and of course its aimed at the market that has historically purchased the fabia.....cash conscious and with no badge snobbery. I did look at the options list for the Premium SE but there are none .... apart from metallic ! It has everything you could ever want but the item i really did like was the full panoramic electric sunroof, it simply flooded the cabin with light and having never ridden in one with such a roof it felt like being in a car with no roof.

Well I own the new i10 premium 1.2 with full kit on it for 10k brand new, no other manufacturer can come close ! I've already decided on the new i20 1.4 tdi premium with panoramic roof and leaving the vw, the i10 is more fabia sized , so in this respect the the difference in price is astronomical

Sat in a new 2015 spec I20 this afternoon.

Very very impressive to sit in, space and ambience wise, a mid spec one was about £12,000.00 brand new with the basic petrol engine.

Also sat in a Skoda Rapid spaceback at the same dealership.

Pleasingly roomy, but a bit drab and cheap feeling internally (purely subjective of course)

The dealer principle (Skoda) was also (apparently!) quite unaware of the forthcoming changes to the Rapid, when I suggested they should be "blowing" out the old model stock at an attractive price.

Wor sensible Son has decided that he will wait until Hyuandai introduce their (alledgedly) cracking good 3 cyl 1.0/1.1 litre petrol.

Plus the sales person already offered £1200 to £1400 off list price,(some "discount applicable to my employment apparently) which should only improve.

The Skoda senior salesperson looked decidedly pensive, when I said based on our daughters Toyota owning experience, of 3 years, 50,000 miles, against my own Skoda experiences, that I would be much more inclined to buy a Toyota than a Skoda.

Quite seriously, Toyota "fess-up" and issue recall notices while VW/Skoda bury their heads in the sand and run 1/2 hearted "Service campaigns"

went to look at fabia 3 today, website said dealer open from 10am, got there at 10:15, showroom door did not open, salesman standing around chatting, looked round the fabia 3 right outside the door in full view of sales man and they did not show any interest in me so left for Hyundai showroom

 

must say seeing the fabia 3 in the flesh, I was not overly impressed for the asking price

 

Hyundai showroom was difficult to find as out the back in a marquee as showroom being rebuilt

 

saleman pleasant and informative

 

I must admit i20 appears a better car, had everything I wanted without resorting extras, wife might swap citigo for i10 at same time

 

so after 15 years of skoda ownership may swap to Hyundai as they said if we swapped both they might give more discount as they could apply for conquest funding as we would both be moving from skoda

 

was very impressed with the build quality,

 

must admit yet to sit in the fabia, but will definitely take both for a test drive

 

first impression skoda is no longer a fore gone conclusion

 

there are pro's and cons to both cars, so not an easy choice

according to what I have seen and what a salesman told me today it will be a 1.0 turbo, generating 118PS, due spring
