Is this bad?

But won't 99 RON be "watered down" by the 95 in the bottom of the tank?

Until you have filled up a few times, yes. However, it really will not make any discernible difference - the Stig probably wouldn't even notice.

You can be absolutely certain that Tesco's inflated figures wouldn't be reflected in their fuel ;)

Seriously, if you feel happier with 99 RON, go for it, it will probably do neither harm or good and you can always have fun driving the extra few miles looking for it. Just enjoy a great car for what it is, if you want to spend money fitting off-the-wall filters, coolers, tuning gizmos, rear anti-roll bars, uprated springs and dampers, etc.,etc., etc. enjoy that too, money is cheap at the moment :)

We pay Duty & VAT on the Fuel we buy, and if it does not meet the Standards, energy & Quantities we are paying for in the Fuel

& Taxes, then we are being Defrauded, and that would be a criminal offence.

What the Stig or others will notice is Cold Idle Issues, and a EPC Light or Exhaust Control System light

They said they're putting £25 in complementary for me before i drive it away! I know for sure it will be £20 and 95 RON!

Off topic now but does the Amundsen head unit support Bluetooth or will I need an extra bit for it to work?

Can't wait to get it tomorrow!

Wise words George. You can always be relied on to come up with some off-the-wall trivia, invariably with random capitals thrown in to add gravitas ;)

An dear. So its gone onto grammar, a true sign theres nothing else to say.

I've been reading this for a while but managed to withhold my comments till now ;).

In short, i agree with George.

Its much better to exceed a manufacturers recommended RON rating than it is to be caught short. 97 is just as close to 98 as 99 is, as whats been pointed out. But 99 is on the better side of 98 when it comes to RON.

When you think about it, the VRS engine is pretty well tuned. A standard N/A 1.4 is making around 80-90bhp isnt it. The 1400cc in the vrs is making 180 atleast, which is a lot for that size engine.

The least you can do to help it is run it on the right fuel, and its a bonus if you're exceeding by 1 RON!

Absolute rubbish. On what do you base your strange claim? Do you think it would be "better" to run a Nissan Micra on Tescos's alleged 99 RON?

Modern cars advance and retard ignition to deal with low or high octane fuel - FACT. The specified fuel is specified for a reason - FACT.

And your suggestion that 97 (minimum) RON fuel is "just as close" to 98 RON as 99 (minimum) RON simply shows that "sums" aren't your strong suit - even George knows better.

Is it not you saying that 97 is near to 98 ?  that was what you said was it not, several times.

What is your issue with a higher octane being used when it might not even cost more?

.........................................................

Page 162,  Fabia MK2 Owners Manual.

"Unleaded petrol with higher octane number

You can make unlimited use of petrol which has a higher octane number than the one prescribed."

then more stuff, and then

"On vehicles with prescribed unleaded petrol min. 95 ron, the use of petrol with a higher octane number

than 95 does not result in a power increase or a lower fuel consumption".

Oddly the VW Manual reads differently from the Skoda one for the same engines.

It was. I was quoting him

Hes effectively arguing with himself now.

I think you've been on the 99 RON yourself.

Meh. Stick what you want in mate. I couldnt care less tbh, its your car, and I've read plenty of your remarks.

So do as you like. But i certainly wont, and never will run an engine on less than the manufacturers recommendation. Id rather exceed that if necessary.

Running a micra on 99 all the time is a waste. Just like it is running my 70hp 1.2 car, or 110hp 800cc bike, they both only require 95 Ron. But on the odd occasion i will run a tank (maybe 2 in the bike, its only a 18l tank) through it just for the extra detergents to clean the engine out. I wont notice an increase in performance in the car, but it will maybe run a little quieter.

I just prefer to look after my stuff as best i can tbh

Just like, i can honestly say, in 17000 miles my car has covered, its never seen a drop of supermarket fuel. It may not be necessary. But i look after my stuff and wont put supermarket petrol in any vehicle i own.

Nore has the car ever been right up to the redline, but thats another story haha

Judging by his performance, im guessing some lower octane stuff you find abroad.

Maybe 99RON would bring him up to speed

;)

Nissan - Ohh have you got fed up of trolling the Quashqai forums now. What George and Oli are saying is absolutely spot on, would you put oil that is below spec in your car? No you wouldn't, would you put oil that includes correct spec and is better in your car, YES. Now can you stop arguing and just concede that 99 Ron is correct for the vRS

You tell em jack ;)

The day has come! 9/10 hours of driving ahead. Put £28 in the 1.2 corsa which should get me about 270 miles on the motorway! I shall be back with the VRS at around 5 or 6pm and to show much enthusiasm will post some photos.

Take it easy!

Haha I test drove this vrs as there was none in my area it's a no bad wee car you getting it from milngavie I guess?

Its important to note that whilst many cars like the Fabia 2 can adjust to suit running lower octane fuel , not all modern cars can , some have no knock control beyond certain rpm points so if your engine does start to detonate then you can damage your engine. Mind you I wouldn't trust the electronics on the VRS to save the engine when driven hard on a hot day

So you should always run (or exceed) the stated minimum octane level of fuel for your car

Wise words. Would never put anything below 99 (or 98 if it existed...) in mine unless faced with no option.

I keep a bottle of octane booster in the boot of my cars just in case but I've not been caught short yet

Half way there. My mates driving the rest of the M6. He disagrees with putting 99RON and thinks I should under inflate my tyres because of a potential blow out. Too early for this

Cracking day for the drive - if your mate is driving you can sit back and enjoy the scenery through Cumbria and then Dumfries & Galloway  .
