Gap between bonnet and wing - should there be a seal? (VRS MK2)

Featured Replies

Noticed today when fitting a bonnet powerlifter that there is a gap between the bonnet and the wings. This will allow water into the engine bay as I can see in, for example you can see the orange bonnet catch hole (See pics).

Should there be a rubber seal as Skoda has seen fit to not add a rain channel to the body work? Never seen this on another car so it really doesnt seem right?

No, there's no rubber seal but the gap in your photo does seem quite large, at least compared with the gap on my vRS.

That does look larger than normal. Noticed before or after fitting the strut? If after, your bonnet alignment is out slightly, as some have found after fitting the struts.

Only noticed after as was checking for bonnet alignment.

So its a choice of:

1. Live with it. (Not gonna happen now Ive seen this)

2. Try to move alignment (if possible).

3. Remove and sell (unfortunate as Ive painted the fixing plate).

From looking at the front:

Left side of bonnet is sunken against wing when running finger across.

Right side is raised. Were talkin mm but you can feel it.

Really dont think bonnet moved when fitting strut, worried the strut has warped the bonnet some how or pushing it in the wrong direction. Will have to take off and see what adjustments I can make to bonnet.

A few of us who fitted the Superskoda kit found this. I was one and took it off and resold it. Plenty fitted theirs with no issue, so quite odd why it causes misalignment for just some of them. My theory was that the fixing bracket was slightly off square when lined up with the bonnet hinge on my car.

Ok once removed? I've taken the strut off now but bonnet still off. Still need to take off bracket.

Trying to research bonnet adjustment incase it's moved although I don't think it did. So very annoying not having a Haynes manual as workshop manual doesn't have alignment guide.

Hopefully I can sell mine as it was expensive!

Mine was ok as soon as I removed it.

Has anyone come up with a successful solution to sealing the 'regular' gap?

I can't believe the gap has been left for cooling purposes.  VWs have seals everywhere which in my experience quiten things down considerably and my last Golf suffered no ingress of water into the engine bay.

After I fitted my strut, I couldn't tell the difference, must have been lucky. I got the drivers side one, not sure if it makes a difference though.

Once I remove strut fixings and if bonnet doesnt fit any better than I shall have to accept that this is a mass produced car with tolerences that allow for some things to not fit 'perfectly'. Maybe the wings are slightly out or bonnet is, all I know is now that Ive noticed it I really want to sort it.

Regarding the gap, is there a rain channel on a standard Octavia MK2? Im wondering if they had to cut way some parts of the body work to fit the engine and running gear into the VRS?

Do you think it was fouling on anthing in engine bay? I cant see any scratches on my bonnet underside so I dont think mine is catching, but the main bracket could be catching on the windscreen scuttle panel?

There was no fouling as far as I could see it.  It was simply pushing the bonnet up a bit too high in my case.

I noticed it pushed mine up too I just made a smaller bracket at work and now it doesn't push bonnet up.

I put masking tape on then could see a witness Mark after I had closed the bonnet, it was fouling on the strut not the bracket but with remaking the bracket, it lowered the strut. Slightly at the front there was also a tiny dint where the mark was.

Thanks for the replies all.

Would be good to find a fix for the gap. May look at fashioning a rubber seal. Will report back if I come up with a mod.

Bracket removed tonight and yes its improved the bonnet fitting very slightly but the alignment is still not right. I can see from the marks the original bolts have made that the bonnet hasnt moved at all so I guess my bonnet wasnt 100% anyway and now Im just sensative to the issue now Ive noticed it.

Not sure I can see a way to improve the different heights? Looking from the front:

From the windscreen edge the bonnet meets with the A pillar perfectly but if I run my finger down the left side gap between wing and bonnet, the bonnet starts to sinks lower than the wing by 2-3ml. Can I raise or move the wing slightly perhaps?

On the right side it starts fine running my finger down the gap but starts to drop of slightly.

There are alot of angles from the wing and the folds in the bonnet so maybe there just off. Tryed to findle with the bump stop heights at the hinge but it didnt altar the bonnet sides enough but over raised the part that meets the A pillar so put back.

No rain channel on the household versions. I've not had an issue with water in the engine bay. It buckets down here when it chooses to rain. We average 1-2 metres / year
