Favorit Windows

Featured Replies

More beginner questions I'm afraid. I've searched the forums a little, but haven't struck gold yet.

Neither front window winds back up. Previous owner said they wind down ok, but I've been too scared of getting drenched to really try. Now the car os off the road and in the garage (to change a CV boot) and I've decided to get stuck in to a few other jobs.

Is fixing/replacing the regulator mechanism a PITA or something I could expect to do myself given that I have less experience than Mr Bean at this stuff?

Any pearls of wisdom or words of warning greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jonny

So you don't know if the windows at least go down, but you are prepared to change the window regulators?

In fact what do you understand by "regulator mechanism" ?

I did warn you I was novice. Please have patience with me!

I needed an idea of complexity before I start. If I wind the thing down only to discover the job is wildly complicated I will end up getting wet!  I also realise now that "regulator" is most probably the wrong word and refers to powered windows, which mine aren't.

I shall start over:

Is it hard to fix the winding mechanism on the front windows of a Favorit? I'd like to know before I start so I don't make a balls of it and end up driving around with my windows open in the rain.

I did warn you I was novice. Please have patience with me!

I asked a couple of questions because I didn't understand clearly what is faulty. I have all the patience in the world.

Based on your own description about your technical skills and on your fear to check if the windows wind down and up, I'd say let a mechanic do the job.

Understood. I'm going to have a go before parting with more £ for the mechanic.

Well, they both wind down fine, but they won't wind up at all. The handle won't turn, it's just stuck.

Appreciate the help, don't get me wrong.

The windows must have been somehow wound up before you got the car, right?

Can you tilt the window left-right with one hand to help it wind up (reduce friction) while with the other hand crank up?

Observe binding spots and also noises.

Sorry for the delay. Work getting in the way, as usual.

Both windows wound all the way down, and then I managed to tilt and wiggle the glass to get them both back up. The glass seems very loose, which may be normal, but felt like it wasn't meant to be like that, and I could get quite a bit of play in it. Now the driver's side won't go down more than a couple of inches.

As for binding spots, there was so much play in the glass that it was hard to tell if there was any one particular spot where it was sticking. They both made a lot of noise, like glass moving against grit/dry dirt, both when tilting by hand and when winding with the handle.

Not very clear, I'm afraid. At least I can get them up again!

NB. This was all done with the doors intact, I haven't removed any door cards or panels.

My Favorit window is the one upstairs in the bedroom, I can see into the bedroom of the blonde piece opposite......... :heartbreak: .....for f**k sake don't tell the wife

Ha ha.

Thanks for that vital piece of information.

Back on topic (boringly), something has fallen into place with the passenger window which now winds up and down with the handle! Not very smoothly, and I have to force it a little at one point, but it's a whole lot better.

If you feel confident enough to remove the door panels, you'll see that some screws of the window carrier are not tightened or are missing.

I took a rear door panel off to reattach a lock-pull and so I think I know what to expect.

Thanks. Will inspect the carrier screws in the morning. I'll also give everything a gentle clean to remove any dust/grit.

If you feel unsure of something, take a clear photo. Well focused, well lit.

Thanks. I will.

Sorry for the delay, but thanks very much! Loose carrier screws indeed.

Now it seems to work much better. The door is a bit bent at the top (like someone tried to break in) and the previous owner had bodged it so the window was tight into the bent frame. Now I have it working it no longer fits the frame, but it's not a big bend, so I will straighten it out and all will be well. Fingers crossed.

Driver's door still to do, but I have so little time at the minute with work and baby....

Thanks very much for your help. If only it was always that easy.

I'm back.

Passenger door is sorted. Frame bent back into shape and watertight, and the window winds smoothly all the way. I tightened one screw and replaced another. Really pleased with the job, although there's a wee clip behind the door card that I simply cannot get to hook in! Not a problem, it's secure enough once all the screws are back in place.

I finally got around to the driver's door, which seemed to be a different issue. It wouldn't wind down at all, with the front part of the window stuck fast. Off came the door card and I saw that the whole carrier mechanism had been taped up. I removed the tape and found that the carrier doesn't move up and down the track when the handle is turned. It's loose and just falls to the bottom of the track. The rear carrier seems to work fine.

In case I have the terminology wrong, the pictures show me holding the bit that I have called the "carrier", and the black tube I have called the "track", which you can see has some remnants of the tape.

There was quite a bit of moisture trapped in the tape, hence the rust.

I have jammed the window up into place, so there is no urgency here. The car is not being used until I get all of the niggles sorted.

Thanks in advance.

You need a new window winding mechanism or at least a working second hand one.

Look for absence of corrosion and cracks. Old plastic gets very brittle.

Thought as much. Thanks. It looks straight forward enough to remove, perhaps a little fiddly.

Next stop, eBay... (or scrappy)

Thanks again.

I have found a mechanism for sale in Germany, but before I buy it, would the mechanism from a Felicia fit? I think they look fairly similar.

Not a problem either way, just trying to save paying £££££ of postage.

Thanks,

Jon

I can't imagine that it's impossible to find one in the UK!

I hope you're right. Northern Ireland drew a blank yesterday, I rang SO many scrappers, but you never know. There are quite a few n/s Felicia regulators for sale on ebay but no o/s, suggesting the drivers ones always break! Hehe.

Someone's got to be breaking one. Maybe I'll ask on the Skoda Owners fb group.

Done!

Regulator from Germany fitted and all windows now work as intended. Just an interior door panel to reattach!

Thanks to all for your help. Very much appreciated!
