I mostly drive in S mode, sometimes when I'am leaving roundabout, it falls to 2 speed, which is much more jumpy, jerky and agressive.

On the 19s Vs 18s wheel / tyres questions.. I've got a 280 that came with 19s that I think look great and drive really nicely most of the time. Certainly A roads and motorways. I live in Devon though so really I could do with more squish for the lanes.

I found this suggestion so I plan to change to 245/40/19 tyres.. slightly wider than standard means 40 ratio has a bit more squish plus a thicker sidewall. Idea for me.

Also slightly higher geared so gives you a more accurate speedo too.. i.e. you don't have the 5% optimistic Speedo reading any more.

  • 2 weeks later...

After a number of years pretty much trouble free with my 280, I have an intermittent issue which started a couple of weeks ago.

When turning on the ignition I get notifications that ACC is unavailable, Park Pilot is unavailable, the traction control warning light comes on and TPMS is unavailable. If I drive a few miles down the road, switch off and back on again the lights usually reset and it's all ok.

I replaced the battery about 3 months ago so I can't think that will be the problem.

I've run a diagnostic check with OBD11 which throws up some codes related to Comms and the Haldex system, but because it is intermittent I just wondered whether anyone else has had a similar issue?

Do you have any ABS/ ESP errors ? If I remember correctly, if you got one cruise, acc won't work.

I didn't see any specific errors with ABS but I'm sure it also disables ESP.

It's weird that it can reset itself when restarting, surely if an ABS sensor is broken or a wire is loose it wouldn't be able to clear itself?

Was it coded when the new battery fitted?

What error you got for the haldex ?

When I had a Passat with haldex, and the system decided to die(I had to replace the diff and it's module), that would disable my traction control

Yes, coded it to the new Yuasa with OBD11 - I went with an EFB battery as that type had been fitted from new.

Fault codes I'm getting are:

Gateway U011400 Lost communication with four wheel drive clutch control module - Static

Brakes U112100 Databus missing - Static

Engine U112300 Databus error value received - Static

ACC U112300 Databus error value received - Static

ACC U112200 Databus implausible message - Static

The only other error is:

Central Electrics B126301 - Trunk lid unlock activation - Intermittent

It’ll be a faulty wheel speed sensor. Symptoms identical to mine about three years ago.

Personal best today started out with a full tank and 300 mile range and ended up with 425 mile range after driving 183 miles !

41.6mpg

I love it when the 99 Ron Fairy tops the tank up as I drive along ! 😂

Impressive. Don't think I've managed much better than 38mpg on a run.

Yeah I was pretty pleased with that !

Good work. I get up to 40 when driving sensibly. My enthusiasm usually drops it to low 30’s but I can live with that.

Yeah that’s veh good. Currently getting 23 to/from work, from cold in all of 1.5 miles! 😂 Best I’ve had is 40.1. on a 200 mile run from Surbiton to Stena Birkenhead. Around 70/75 most of the time with the odd blast to see off BMW/Audi/Corsaboi tail hangers.

On my run to the coast a couple of weeks ago (80miles each way with a 50:50 single lane A road/motorway split) I got a reported 40mpg on the run out. On the way home I switched into eco mode, used coasting and drove like a granny as much as possible.

40mpg again.

What a waste of time 🫤

I’ve found that too - driving in sport mode and still got healthy economy; guess it’s about the way you drive rather than the mode of the car.

Yes indeed!

To drive too much in "granny mode" I think you are mostly lugging the engine and stressing drivetrain and brakes ....

I cannot imagine how much of a fuel consumption difference it can make the fact that on eco ancillaries like the AC are working at minimal power, bit I suspect is negigible....

I am now driving mostly in Sport with the occasional manual "nudge" when the DSG is slow to upshift, and I have not noticed any meaningful variation in MPG.

Which I assume as the engine like more the 1.5 to 2k RPM range than the 1.1k/1.5k RPM range usually promoted by the "eco" driving, and the engine braking on downshift versus the "coasting" and just wasting brake components ....

Yep. I could never get on with the ECO mode / coasting mode either which, without any engine braking, promotes more & unnecessary use of the brakes. Either that or you have to come off the throttle miles before a roundabout or lights which frustrates the hell out of anyone behind you.

I stay in D mode most of the time with the odd spurt in Sport mode & manual downshifts via the paddles when needed.

Thanks Numskull, how do I tell which sensor it is, will I see visually, or better to just replace all 4?

Your specialist will scan the car and that will identify which one has failed.

I'll have a guess - rear offside.

Oddly, yes that was the one that failed on ours….

Had my 2020 Superb 272 hatch for 5 months now, now I'm (sort of) over the initial constant desire to take it for random blasts (average of 27mpg over 3.5k miles) I have been pretty impressed with the mpg on my twice weekly commute on the m3/m25, I'm constantly managing over 50mpg whilst on the motorway, which has blown my mind, although by the time I've got through the current traffic coming onto the A3 and booted it a couple of times it'll be down into the low 40's

Very impressive - I drive my 280 like a saint and can only get 40mpg.........
