Breaking VW Emissions Scandal -Mk I

Featured Replies

MOT stations would obviously have to buy new equipment when this test comes in.

A great many MOT stations are still reeling and only just recovering from the debacle that was the ability to even issue an MOT certificate at all.

I'm not sure there is any spare goodwill between the test stations and the DVSA to do this at any time soon with any large outlay of cash on there part.

My MOT station was having to print his backlog of tests starting at 5am for several weeks just to get to a point he should of been at 4 weeks previous, and he has zero confidence in or patience with the DVSA.

I think it's called 'unintended consequences'..........'knock-on effect'......that sort of thing.

Bit like the RWC.....oops!

Anyone heard anything about "will compensation be due"? I'm thinking what if the Vehicle tax has to be re-grouped, resale value dropping, etc. I'm sure thousands of people buy vehicles based on emission groups.

I had my letter yesterday from Skoda UK, with the same wording as I'm sure everyone else has had, including looking at the Skoda web site for diesel info updates.

Also, what happens if your MOT is due before the the technical solution work has been done?

It has already been stated that VED rates will not change, as they are set on the day the vehicle is first registered, plus in the UK, VED rates are not based on N0x.

And the MOT is only a smoke test, so of no consequence.

I agree, but this sort of major change can either be done with the co-operation of the test stations and go as smoothly as possible given the new technology required, or it can be forced on them, whereupon the test stations will find every reason to destroy the initiative before it even leaves the ground.

The DVSA does not have a good track record with regard to field testing updates before they are sent to test stations, and it is no great secret that the existing emissions test on petrols can be easily circumvented by a creative test station employee and an unscrupulous boss.

The only thing that will tighten up the situation is when roadside testing starts to get a larger presence on our roads, but I for one am careful what I wish for.

Come on chaps, let's not fight amongst ourselves, surely we can blame Muslims or Putin for this?

And that's surely coming

Now Volvo have followed VW with a similar statement about new priorities .....hybrid/plugin.....they know the clocks ticking

What! Additional software problems on 2016 cars !! If they are found to be cheating a second time in the US, what on earth will happen to the company when the lawyers get to them?! Perhaps I read the item incorrectly in the link I posted, I hope so

Bet Porsche is glad it didn't buy VW now, although I hope all this doesn't drag them down. Also as the pollution caused by these VWs is spread out through the whole world presumably, at least once all the air has mingled around the planet, shouldn't the US share out this rather large fine to everyone? :) After all if the Americans are driving a lot of these vehicles, it's them that is killing us all, even if they didn't mean to.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. regulators say they have a lot more questions for Volkswagen, triggered by the company's recent disclosure of additional suspect software in 2016 diesel models that potentially would help exhaust systems run cleaner during government tests.

That's more bad news for VW dealers looking for new cars to replace the ones they can no longer sell because of the worldwide cheating scandal already engulfing the world's largest automaker. And, depending on what the Environmental Protection Agency eventually finds, it raises the possibility of even more severe punishment.

Volkswagen confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday that the "auxiliary emissions control device" at issue operates differently from the "defeat" device software included in the company's 2009 to 2015 models disclosed last month.

The new software was first revealed to Environmental Protection Agency and California regulators on Sept. 29, prompting the company last week to withdraw applications for approval to sell the 2016 cars in the U.S.

"We have a long list of questions for VW about this," said Janet McCabe, acting assistant EPA administrator for air quality. "We're getting some answers from them, but we do not have all the answers yet."

The delay means that thousands of 2016 Beetles, Golfs and Jettas will remain quarantined in U.S. ports until a fix can be developed, approved and implemented. Diesel versions of the Passat sedan manufactured at the company's plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, also are on hold.

Volkswagen already faces a criminal investigation and billions of dollars in fines for violating the Clean Air Act for its earlier emissions cheat, as well as a raft of state investigations and class-action lawsuits filed on behalf of customers.

If EPA rules the new software is a second defeat device specifically aimed at gaming government emissions tests, it would call into question repeated assertions by top VW executives that responsibility for the cheating scheme lay with a handful of rogue software developers who wrote the illegal code installed in prior generations of its four-cylinder diesel engines.

That a separate device was included in the redesigned 2016 cars could suggest a multi-year effort by the company to influence U.S. emissions tests that continued even after regulators began pressing the company last year about irregularities with the emissions produced by the older cars.

The software at issue makes a pollution-control catalyst heat up faster, improving performance of the device that separates smog-causing nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen and oxygen gases.

"This has the function of a warmup strategy which is subject to approval by the agencies," said Jeannine Ginivan, a VW spokeswoman. "The agencies are currently evaluating this and Volkswagen is submitting additional information."

Automakers routinely place auxiliary emissions control devices on passenger vehicles, though they are required by law to disclose them as part of the process to receive the emissions certifications that are required to sell the cars.

EPA's McCabe wouldn't say if VW's failure to disclose the software in its 2016 applications was illegal. "I don't want to speak to any potential subjects of an enforcement activity," she said.

If VW was cheating a second time, that would probably mean higher fines against the company, said Kelley Blue Book Senior Analyst Karl Brauer.

Regulators are "going to be even more angry than they already are," Brauer said. "The punitive actions from the EPA are only going to get more aggressive."

The German automaker already faces up to $18 billion in potential fines over the nearly half-million vehicles sold with the initial emissions-rigging software.

AP first reported Oct. 7 that the EPA and California Air Resources Board were investigating "the nature and purpose" of additional software on the new VW models, but at the time both the company and regulators declined to provide details about what the device does or how it works.

Volkswagen of America CEO Michael Horn said in congressional testimony last week that the German automaker had withdrawn applications seeking certification of its 2016 diesels because of on-board software that hadn't been disclosed to regulators. However, Horn's statement left unclear whether the issue with the 2016 models was the same as that in the earlier models, or whether it potentially constituted a new violation.

A congressional staffer briefed on the issue told AP that VW probably didn't need the additional software to meet government emissions standards, but that the device appears intended to ensure the 2016 cars would pass inspection by wider margins. The staffer spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk publicly about the ongoing investigation.

VW is now working with regulators to continue the certification process needed to sell its 2016 diesel cars

Green Car Reports and The Car Connection also......concise and add free and like GoAuto News worth the read.

Somebody did mention Muslim, but let the UK Government never mention the Elephant in the room, and in the Board Room of VW / Porsche.

They know a bit about diesel and fossil fuels.

2009 they put their money in for a long term investment, 4 years later (2013!!) they sell the 10% share back to the Porsche Family, changed their minds and have still lost billions, of somebodies money, not theirs.

Much collecting of facts figures on vehicles and vehicle failures in Germany and yet supposedly their cars are reliable,

where in fact they are at the foot of reliability tables, and high on the lists for engine failures.

Not many Countries and Government Agencies can compete with the German for being able to manipulate figures & statistics,

and the economies finances.

2.4 Million vehicles in Germany to be 'Fixed' properly using the Euro.

& what sort of Insurance is covering what requires doing in other countries, and at cost to others that are not just VW Germany.

Are VWG buying in parts from others, or producing in other non European Countries and manipulating the Importing and Exporting of parts and Tax laws in their usual way?

Every Cloud can have a Silver Lining down the line.

While someone some place losses money, more Millionaires will be made, likely more German millionaires.

Doubtful that any of the Heads of VW have their assets in American banks now.

To be honest, a new set of fuel injectors, buckshee, for a car nearly six years old and 100k plus on the clock is quite a pleasant bonus! The car itself hasnt let me down, not even once.

Sorry, there was a conspiracy.

2 Rogue Computer people put a Defeat Device on 11 Million ECU's World Wide.

& Nobody at the Head of the Volkswagen Group in the world regions knew.

There's a surprise - trying to pin it all on a couple of engineers.

All I'll say is be very wary. That was my attitude a few years ago. The biggest mistake I made was letting a Skoda dealer replace the injectors.

This thread sums it up quite concisely...

I appreciate this was a few years ago on a now obsolete engine but it is still fresh in my (and many other affected owners) memory.

This wasn't a one-off dealer mistake, this was an inherent issue across the UK caused directly by dealers carrying out what should have been a relatively simple job. Quite what went wrong we still don't know. What I do know is that there are still a lot of rough running MkII PD170 Octavia's out there with engine oil that is being contaminated with diesel fuel that Skoda UK have washed their hands of.

And today's prize for the initiation of conspiracy theories goes to............................................................................................................................................guess who?

Why just "today's"?

Today's New York Times reports that the German govt has given VW until the end of November to provide details of it's German recall fix......seems like a moving deadline.

Referring back to a question I asked in another thread before the VW scandal broke would running Veg oil instead of diesel prevent the emitting of harmful particles including NOX? As veg oil is not a mineral oil derivative surely the particles generated in the smoke are less harmful and not carcinogenic. Could Veg oil be the solution?

We are already running Bio Fuels all around the World in Petrol & Diesel cars.

'One quarter of US Grain Crops fed to cars'.

Growing crops to turn into fuel while billions around the world starve.

I seem to recall a form of acceptable (for TDIs) algae based biodiesel is being developed which 'grows' and can be harvested for refining......will it come in time though for the light diesel?.

That's not really answering my question. The E189 engine would require little alteration to run on Veg oil would this reduce or remove nox from the exhaust and would it satisfy the test with the cheat device removed? One assumes a dpf would not be required.

Run them on Adblue with an honest map.

You can run vehicles of Veg Oils, you can even buy without have to pay Duty / VAT on WVO or even brand new off the self.

But the Governments & the Fossil Fuel Oil Producing Countries want Oil out the ground to be used.

Thats what keeps the Economies as they are.

Thats what keeps the Rich Countries rich, and buying weapons from the US, China, Russia and others including Europe.

There are nots of ways to cut NoX,  Produce really Green Vehicles, lighter, more fuel efficient,

but that is not really in anyones interest where their Economy comes from Manufacturing cars.

ie Germany.

They say it's not suitable.

Maybe it has something to do with the HPFP .
