Had my letter from Skoda about my 1.6cr engine..... the letter said nothing about 7 hours work, new parts, exhaust etc..... is what has been stated above just the usual internet guess work or is this semi confirmed ? My car drives just fine for me, not sure i want to waste a day of my life doing this, the dealer is miles away and i work shifts so do not want to be messing about with this on my day off. May just not bother if its this much work.

VW's UK boss Paul Willis has confirmed the 1.2-litre and 2.0-litre diesel engines will require a software fix, while vehicles with a 1.6-litre diesel will also need new injectors fitted. This means around 400,000 UK cars would require mechanical changes. Speaking before the House of Commons' select committee, Willis failed to answer questions relating to whether or not UK owners would be compensated. 

As posted elsewhere I dodged buying a 1.6TDI with the dealer giving a good deal on a TSI. However if I had got the oil burner, I'd most probably be steering clear of a hurried fix to pacify politicians, as the cars are running well as designed, albeit illegally. Only issue I suppose would be if the Government interfered and failed unmodified cars come the MOT.

If they fail the VW's at MOT's for the Nox emissions being too high, they'd have to fail most diesel cars for the same reason as increasingly it's evident that most cars are running way over the certified Nox limits and others are considerably worse than VW.  I'm not claiming they're cheating but there seems to be some excessive bending of the rules.

 I don't suppose there's any chance the remedy for my 170 TDi will be to swap it for the Golf GTE setup - keeping the 4WD of course. That would be very nice :)

Here's a scenario for you, in a few years time, when you come to change your car the dealer says," It's not had the upgrade work has it? I won't touch this wi' a bargepole & neither will any other dealer. You won't be able to give it away". If your car is still under warranty Skoda UK might void the warranty because you've not had the work done.

 

It's all if's But's & maybe's at the moment. My car is one of those affected & I got the letter yesterday.

The models certification has been removed and yours is on record........maybe

But you can do that without letting VAG techs lay a finger on your car. Only people I can see taking in their cars to have the 'FIX' are the ill informed technophobes and people who care about the bunnies and trees or respiratory issues in fellow humans.

 

Considering no-one knows what the fix is going to be I am surprised you can be so offensive!

The MOT for diesels is only a smoke test. There is NO emissions test!

Compensated? I should bloody well hope so! Those of us that have the 1.6Tdi should be offered the option of being given a BRAND NEW car of the same spec. Mr Willis said that It's important to regain customer confidence again, well that's the best way of getting it in my opinion. Who knows what the re-sale value will be in the years ahead.

I fear that people who are expecting compensation, pence per mile reimbursements, free servicing or brand new replacement cars are going to be bitterly disppointed.

 

The repair will be carried out for free, you will get a courtesy car and it is likely they might pick it up and drop if off from your place of work or home but that will be it.

Offensive really? If you watch the video, VW have data that 5% choose their car based on its environmental credentials. The tree hugging hippy type comments were light hearted hardly offensive unlike your constant repetition of 'they only test for smoke on MOT' to belittle other forum users which im sure offends more than just me (occurs at least 4 times in this topic although I suspect you read it out aloud at home and like hearing your own condescending voice). Pollution is a serious issue for some but i bought a vrs because i like to get a wriggle on and quite frankly climate change wont affect me or my kids generation and China will kill us all with their consumption of fossil fuels, tinkering around the edges with cars that don't even make up 0.0001% of the total emissions is not enough to influence me to take my car back to have a performance downgrade.

Yes, you're probably right. The very least that Skoda UK should offer is a guarantee that no one will lose out money wise, when they come to sell the vehicle.

What certificate?

The process by which your relevant govt department gives emissions test approval.

I would expect a list of VINs would be made of all affected vehicles and those not ticked off as fixed would attract attention once beyond a specified date for completion (at VW's expense).

VW have to have a date for completion so that they can satisfy angry govt's that they have in fact completed the recall process.

VW can then advise govt (registering authorities) of any VINs that have not cooperated or been fixed for what ever reason.

The first thing 'the trade' will do is look for the recall completion sticker on the base of the A pillar.

We may want what we want but govt's may actually take this seriously.

What happen next is the .......maybe

I've been through a Skoda recall before, a few years ago. That too involved replacing injectors.

 

It was a disaster, there were many other owners who's cars were never the same again (well documented on here).

 

My car is affected but it won't be going in for any recall remedial work, at least until I know for sure what it will entail.

It was on an article linked to early in the thread, and was being looked at a few years ago due to the rise in DPF removals and the government's need to meet EU and global emissions targets.

A DPF removal may meet a smoke test, but would fail any NOX testing.

Oh rite hadnt seen anythin about that. Wish id bought the petrol vrs now

We have mass inspections of cars driving by on major roads detecting from reg plates if fines are outstanding with 'sheriffs' of the relevant court prepared to seize vehicles of those who haven't paid.........then breath test, including drugs......reg check......then road worthiness inspection.......(RECALL check?.)

A drive by emission test shouldn't be any problem and now, thanks to VW for their heroic efforts in highlighting NOx problems, will probably not be far off.

I think the modern expression is ........THANK A BUNCH

Ps the 'green lobby' will keep govt honest or suffer the pr consequences also

Are VAG petrol residuals going up?  They're surely going to be in demand.

not necessarily ,   I would say all VW's are now suspect,  because it is not only  diesel engines that have proved troublesome, dsg's   oil pump drive shafts, yeti's?,  bodywork on some models?. I had  more or less decided to change next year to  140 ACT petrol but  now have grave doubts re the reliability of VW's ability  on the 2 cyl dropping out action.  I will wait and see, but also prepared to hang on to what I have as only done 15,000 in 5 years, so may as well hang onto it, especially as it has pan roof, wood décor, spare wheel, 2 level boot etc and make it the last car I buy. But my faith in V W engineering has taken a bashing.
