Ste's Detailing Advent Calendar 2015

Featured Replies

I saw the thread he had running somewhere about the SiRamik detail he & a friend did. The car looked fantastic when finished, better than new!!

I recall you mentioning something on the Gtechniq line been slightly difficult of late..

Did you manage to go see Alex @ Altec about the Max Protect coatings?

Yes indeed - seen a few Siramik reviews overall and all very positive.

Alex said he would let me know when the next Max Protect booking was due;

so I could drop in and see some of the processes, between curing periods etc.

That'll be an interesting day! I find myself watching a lot of YouTube videos on coating application & what not, usually for hours on end when I should be asleep haha!

DAY 4: Gtechniq Quick Detailer

Website blurb....

Gtechniq Quick Detailer is designed to be super easy to use as the very last step in your regular wash routine.

Use Gtechniq Quick Detailer to remove annoying water traces often left behind during the drying process or to remove finger prints and dust from an otherwise pristine finish.

Based around Gtechniq's Smart Surface Science technology, Quick Detailer (QD) is fully compatible with all of Gtechniq's range of paint and glass coatings.

Directions For Use:

  • Gtechniq QD can be used with any Nano-Quartz Sealant or natural carnauba wax
  • Spray onto surface and buff off with a Microfibre Buffing cloth
  • Can be layered to further enhance gloss, slickness of finish and durability

The Gtechniq QD is a fantastic product and I've used it since shortly before it was released to the public. It's great for a quick detail or as a drying aid.

Basically a sealant with a cleaning action. I bought a five litre container of it in the end (all Gtechniq prices are better the larger the quantity) and I wouldn't do without it.

Well - Shaun has given me enough info on SiRamik to convince me - that's for sure.

His new car was fully sealed when new and looks absolutely stunning everytime I see it!

I did get some info from a friendly local detailer that Gtechniq have been more troublesome.

Seemingly, to keep up with production capacity, the manufacturing process has changed a bit.

Therefore.... some of the paint coatings have "allegedly" become a bit more problematic.

In saying that - I haven't used them extensively - so can't comment/confirm for sure.

I've used Gtechniq products for five years and never had any issues or heard any issues or heard of any production changes to any of their product range (though I can ask Rob Earle, the director of Gtechniq if you have any specific issues). The only coating which could possibly be considered 'problematic' is Crystal Serum, this is a great coating that needs to be applied very specially as any error can't just be polished off but has to be sanded off which is why it's only sold to accredited detailers who have been trained to apply it.

The other Gtechniq Coatings C1, C4, C5 and EXO are still available to the public and accredited detailers as a whole. As with any long lasting highly durable coating planning, preparation and attention to detail are the course of the day.

Hello mate and welcome back onto the forum - haven't seen much from you in ages!  I hope all is well buddy! :)

Great info from your side then..... I really appreciate your input as well; it helps not to be skewed by one detailers experience.

As I did say above - I don't use Gtechniq much but am seeing a call to move more this way - due to its good reputation.

So I've only been canvassing opinion on the options and performance..... so 1 - 1 DRAW for now! One positive, one slightly negative.

Plus I do fully understand the comment about ensuring full and correct preparation for sure, attention to detail at every stage,

and not practising on clients cars.... to give the best opportunity to achieve success... and whole-heartedly agree.

So - are you still detailing regularly or not finding the time these days?

Cheers. I haven't been on here or DW much of late, been busy elsewhere.

To be honest I didn't get on with the bug remover either and use a blast of QD, allow to soak a little and then further spray and wipe to take the bugs off.

If there are any other Gtechniq products you want to try after you've got through your advent calendar let me know and I'll send some 100ml bottles of products out.

I still detail for a hobby but the weather being what it is means it's hit and miss whether I get chance to get anything done.

That's awesome mate - I really appreciate the offer and will keep that in mind.

I only detail as a hobby; but a few friends have bought new cars recently and are looking for a really good durable protection detail.

So - knowing that their wash/wax routine would not be adequate - I have suggested some ceramic coatings and such like....

But obviously I need to gain some experience on this and then offer better advice based on my findings.

As you say.... more than any thing, some decent detailing weather is the main issue for now! :giggle:  ;)

Seems that I may have mentioned Gtechniq at some point? :giggle:

I've had a few people ask about using ceramic paint coatings this past year...

So I best give them a try!!!

your lucky, I've EVEN tried dropping hints but it's falling of deaf ears!!

hahaha - nice one Mick!  :sun:

You will have to keep us updated on your findings Ste as I have been researching ceramic coatings.

I have carbon collective wheel sealant for my alloys (just need a refurb first!)

I am also leaning towards Gtechniq C1 as a sealant for the paint as I have been doing some research which all appears positive. I already use Gtechniq G5 for the glass which I rate very highly.

No problem at all - will do mate.

Likewise.... G5 is a personal favourite and C4, M1 and I1 are all in the collection already;

i just havent progressed to the paint coatings directly - due to my love of waxes.

Awesome thread Ste, and Mr j is correct. Defo a keeper! Haha.

DAY 5: Dodo Juice - Born to be Mild pH Neutral Shampoo

Web Info...

Dodo Juice Born to be Mild Shampoo is a pH-neutral maintenance shampoo with good cleaning and foaming properties - plus high lubricity to help prevent wash-induced swirls. Born to be Mild contains no wax or gloss enhancers so you can use it on glass without streaking. Dodo Juice Born to be Mild Shampoo preserves existing wax to keep your vehicle looking its best.

Dodo Juice Born to be Mild Shampoo is highly concentrated. You can dilute it up to 1:800 with water, without it losing its effectiveness. That’s about 10x more than some auto shampoos. But most importantly, it’s designed to be 'wax friendly' and to leave previously applied wax layers on the car, while removing only dirt and grime.

Dodo Juice Born to be Mild Shampoo is foam lance friendly, when used in higher concentrations. Use it with our Foam Cannon HP for rich, fragrant foam.

Use Dodo Juice Born to be Mild Shampoo as often as needed to gently clean your vehicle.

DAY 6: Dodo Juice Lime Prime

Website blurb....

As some old wise man probably said, ‘it’s all about the preparation’ and he was right. Prepare your surface with a pre-wax cleaner and you’ll optimise the performance of your wax.
Dodo Juice Lime Prime is a pre-wax cleaner with micro-abrasives, cleansing agents and oils that will get rid of light swirls, water marks and oxidised paint. What’s more it smells of limes.
Dodo Juice Lime Prime is a gentle yet effective cleaner that will remove imperfections and old layers of wax to leave a surface with a clean and clear finish.
For best results apply Dodo Juice Lime Prime with a machine polisher after you’ve washed and clayed and before waxing. You can then use Dodo Juice Lime Prime periodically and before applying a new wax.
