Amundsen Satnav update

Thanks SWboy. The Skoda instructions do say that after insering the updates SD card I should go Menu, Settings, update software hence my concern at the error message then returned. From what you say this is inrelevant to an update which makes me very happy.

Those instructions don't apply to the Amundsen... as that keeps the map data on the SD card (it has no internal storage for maps).

Hi SWBoy,

My mistake - printed out Columbus instead of Amundsen doh.

Thanks again for your help and I hope reading these posts will help someone else avoid my problems.

Thanks guys, I got it working. It took me a while to understand what formatting with 4K segment meant:blush:

I recently updated my Amundsen to ECE 2017/2018 and, apart from my saved destinations no longer working, it was fine.  Didn't need to format it, just deleted the existing contents.  I also used the Skoda application to do the unpacking rather than 7zip.  The app works ok, but appears to be single threaded, meaning that when busy the UI freezes.  This makes it look like it has broken or stopped working.  I would suggest being patient.

Does it really matter if the SD card is official Skoda or not?  I'm very doubtful.  I would expect that validation and security would be enabled by the md5 hash file in the root of the card.  I would expect that your car's VIN would be encrypted into that file using the private key of an asymmetrical key pair, and then decrypted by the car using the public pair of that same key.  This mechanism would ensure that Skoda could control which car received which update without the need for "official" SD cards.

This is, however, all conjecture.  I haven't tried updating my SatNav with a non-Skoda SD

It's necessary to use the Original SD card to update on it ! This genuine SD card is Read Only protected to avoid illegal copies !

It's not "Read Only protected" - if it were you wouldn't be able to write the new map data onto it B)

What is does use is the hidden Secure Data area (which is why they are called SD cards), which has data programmed into it that identifies the card as a genuine one and not just an off-the-shelf card. This area can only be accessed and programmed using special programs which are not publicly available.

Seeing as this seems to be the latest topic on map updates, my experience...

Down Loaded and Updated on W7 PC connected to an ethernet internet connection, downloaded fine, started unpacking and said SD card full and (by my mistakenly pressing a key ) started to delete the files automatically ( First Warning for when you try this back the card up before doing ANYTHING! )

Went onto unpacking stage and failed about 3 times when on Turkish Maps saying SD card Full....Grrr, Panic starts to set in because of no back up :)

Format SD card as ExFAT, try again says wrong format

Format SD card as FAT32, try again fails on Turkey again SD Card Full, Format SD Card AGAIN! decide to try advice from another thread and unpack without using the unpack option of the installer, all seems OK until I put it into the the unit, No Valid Files, thinking by now that I'm going to have to fork out for a new card or used on EBay, so went to the pub.

Cameback from Pub,feeling a little better and decided to try one more time, this time I figured lets try W10 on the daughters laptop, turned off the power save modes so it wouldn't be interrupted, ran the (freshly downloaded ) install package and lo and behold it said the SD wasn't empty do I want to delete files? Now I honestly thought I had already wiped it from the last aborted install but maybe not, anyway clicked go and off it went, unpacking, came back to it a (long) while later to see a message saying sucess ( first time I had seen this message ) anyway SD card now back in unit, maps available and credit card back into wallet!

Perseverance is the key I think and if all else fails try a different PC and SD Card reader/writer :)

On the Amundsen the data remains on the SD card, not copied to the internal memory.

To update one's cartography when you miss space on your GENUINE SD card,  it's necessary to format it using FAT 32 and cluster size 4K (instead of basically cluster size 32K).

N.B : cluster size = 4K if u use a a 8 Gb SD card

        cluster size = 8K if u use a 16, 32 Gb SD Card

Never format it with ExFat !

Here is the go :

- download your new carto (www.navigation.com/is-bin/...) on your HDD

- backup on your HDD your genuine Skoda Sd card carto. 8 gb capacity

- format it quickly using Fat 32 and cluster size = 4K (windows, right-click, cluster size = 4K; quick format)

So you increase the capacity of your sd card, 1 piece of file using now 4K instead of 32 K !!!

- keep your genuine sd card on the usb sd card reader attached to your PC

- download your new carto. using downloader.exe (downloaded at the sime time as your new carto.)

- as the end of the downloading...your stuff will be properly extracted on your sd card (or if u prefer

you can use 7-zip to extract your carto. on your sd card)

- Put your new carto. on your sat nav (ignition  ON), after verification (wait for 1/2 minutes), NAV menu will appear

Enjoy !

As per my previous comments I recently purchased a facelift Skoda Octavia with an Amundsen Sat nav and my maps were reported as ECE1 2017, from reading this forum I found that this is an old version of the maps and a newer version ECE 2017/18 is now available. When I go to the update portal an enter my VIN I am told no update is available.

I downloaded the latest version for the Amundsen using the link

and followed the instructions from on a Windows 10 PC

My maps have now updated and report ECE 2017/18 :-)

Don’t know why the update portal told me no update is available? Seems this may not be reliable? anyway have the latest now.

Jon.

Just to close out my posts. I complained on skoda Facebook page about the problem with downloading on a mac and on 13th July was given an e mail address to state my issues.  After a very robust reminder yesterday I now have a reply and have confirmed that the download error message when using a mac has been fixed. No apology for the excessive delay though :-(

Looking forward to the Nov update now to see if skoda have learnt from what was clearly a web scripting error.

I have always carried out satnav updates without any issues but I have just tried to update to 2017-2018 (Octavia Amundsen).  This download when unzipped is too large to fit on the SD card provided (8Gb). I have read that the system is matched to the SD card (MAC address?) so does anyone know how to get around this issue.  Or will a new Skoda supplied SD card work?

In my opinion the car should have come with a larger SD card given how large the images are!

Try formatting your genuine skoda MAP in 4K/8K cluster size instead of 32K (don't forget to backup your old cartography on your HDD

before operating).

The 2017/18 version is 13gb + and from memory the 2016 version I've just installed was also much more than 8gb so I'm guessing  your installed maps must have been quite old? Quart/pint pot I'm afraid. Sorry I don't know what the process is for buying a larger sd card but suspect it will have to come from Skoda in order for the sat nav to recognise it.

If it's 13GB then you've downloaded the wrong update.

The 2017_18 map update for the Amundsen is 6GB when downloaded, and definitely fits onto an 8GB SD card provided the card has been reformatted to use either 4K or 8K clusters.

You have to use a genuine Skoda SD card because Skoda (VAG actually) use the hidden secure data area that cannot be accessed without specialised software that is not publicly available.

The knowledge on these forae is excellent and has already benefited me enormously but having checked again I have a 15.6 Gb sd card with 1.29 free. One small .txt file,  MAPS folder, an EEC folder.

Maybe when entering the VIN the website downloads the version of maps to the capacity of the SD card known to have been installed when the car was new?

Can the card be formatted without loosing the encrypted partition ? The card still works ?

For the space issue, I just backed up the content of the card then deleted it from the card.

I then unpacked the downloaded file and ditched the Turkey files. Hell I am never going there with my car. Copied the files the card (without turkey) and voila. No issues.

So my advice if you lack space ditch the countries you are not interested from the map folder (before copying to the card)

The encrypted area isn't a partition, it's a totally separate area that's invisible without the correct (not publicly available) software.

The last two updates I've done using direct links posted here by members, so my VIN is unknown.

What Amundsen do you have? Is it a MIB1 or a MIB2?

Sorry - no idea nor anything obvious to tell me.

OK let's try another way to find out what Amundsen version you have, what's the filename of the map update that you downloaded?

The installed version is 5L0051236T, 0820, ECE1 2017/18

I haven't kept the downloaded files once installed.

Sounds like MIB2 to me - my MIB1 update says 5E0051236, 0067, ECE 2017/18
