11/10 would give you a far greater return for £5k than a measly £500......had they won at those odds, a profit of £5,500,

I suspect he meant ten to one on. (1/10).

Either way he's out of pocket to the tune of £5k. The title of this thread looks somewhat inappropriate.

It was 11/10 against an England win at the time of posting. Maybe he'd've staked more if he hadn't misunderstood the potential profitability?

He might be in some sort of trouble. I suspect he is pretty worried about his finances. I guess anyone who can glibly punt £5k on a whim is either loaded or potentially has a gambling problem. Most I ever bet, was £200 on the Grand National. It was my 25th one I had been working at and as I had never placed a bit there before (i also assumed it was going to be my final nation too) I figured "sod it!".
